seems a shame that such a wonderful musician has to work at TAFE (no offence TAFE teachers), I just mean if would be nice if she could live off fat royalties like other people (eg Sting). Maybe she likes it. Hope she is still creating music in some form or other.
In that case I take it back. But clearly u r a homophobe & my film 'Blow Job in the Library' is avail on myspacetv is u actually wanna check it out b4 u make a comment. But seriously Babyshambles?? Pete's got absoluetely NO talent no matter how u look at it. Ive also got a Sylvester video on my youtube channel. Guess what? Hes GAY too. Grant McClennan was gay too so do u hate the Go-Betweens now?
Nothing against gays, just people who don't have an open mind about other people's musical tastes. You've read 1 too many article on Pete Doherty in "New Idea" to cloud any understanding of Pete's talents.
Compare ANY of Pete's lyrics to ANY artist of Today's releases and you will not come close.
The man is a modern day poet, admittingly with a serious drug habit (there, are you glad I said that bit?).
That Way and this song are the best from a sublime album as Before Hollywood still is. I was just mentioning today to a friend of mine when I saw r.e.m. for the first time in 1989 and Go-Betweens were the opening. Simply beatiful.
Saw the band a few years ago at the Big Day Out, Melbourne. It was one of the most memorable gigs I have witnessed. So happy to see them perform live. A truly classy act! Best Australian band ever!
You could say that both Grant's dad and Grant died when Grant was, relatively speaking, young.
His own father's early loss brings some meaning to the line "his father's watch, he left it in the showers" -- not sure what. Maybe he took that one to the grave.
Not realy my kind of music. but he has got a decent voice, if any one could tell me some information about him, it would be much appreciated. I'm a McLennan and doing some family history research, i noticed that this singer was also a McLennan and i am trying to put it all together see were he comes up in the family tree...
I used to drink with Grant at a bar in Brisbane called Rics in the late 90s. He was a REAL gentleman. He was incredibly well read, and a very gentle, unassuming man. I had spent quite a few sessions on the piss with him, before finally asking him: "what do you do?" He looked at me shyly, and said: "Umm.. I do Music."
Such a modest man. And such a fantastic ear for a melody. I will never forget GW McLennan.
Thanks so much for posting. I can still recall hearing this song for the first time; it was so different from what I was listening to at the time (Minutemen, Replacements). This tune still has a haunting quality about it. Great song, great band.
What they had was great songwriting ability , that's what makes bands great , not technique , any fool caan learn to play an instrument , the Go betweens are one of the great bands of their time because of the songs , thing is they were also great musicians cos they understand music, too many people don't ...

The female pretending that she can drum is an interesting effect...are the guitarists plugged in..or is it like it sounds & is really the local golden years band
She isn't a great drummer therefore she's a slapper? And she may have been getting lessons, this song was very early in the bands life. Grant (who wrote it) had only been playing guitar for a short time (from bass) and this was one of (if not) the first song he ever wrote. And one of his best. Some musicians just want to get across nice songs, some want to become technically brilliant, both have their place. If you want musical gymnastics this is not the band to listen to.
most ppl probably dont want to hear this sort of stuff, but ill just say something personal about why i really love this song, my dad had cancer and passed away when i was younger and just the "his fathers watch, he left it in the shop" lyric means a lot to me..
happy sad haunting unearthly scary lonesome achingly desolate enduring timeless extrasensory challenge to existing notions of the power of song and melody
I can smell the sweet earth, see cane sparks raining down from the sky, hear the clang of the cane cars shunting. Inspirational!
You Ozzies even had an Ambassador that gave this song to every US Congressperson, as it captures that something special, too bad they haven't figured out how to use CD players yet. Kudos!
This single was my introduction to the Go-Betweens as a college student in 1983. So beautiful and slightly off-kilter; Another timeless song from an outstanding band.

I'm not an Aussie but grew up listening to this song as a surfer boy. I learned the lyrics to this song and it truly gave me a perspective of growing the Australian countryside.
Sadly I didn't know Grant had died until played this. One of, if not THE most unheralded great bands of all time. Fond memories of listening to thses guys in the mid 80's when I was still cool.
I had forgotten what a great song this is. Friends, we must truly make the most of each moment in our lives and try and leave some magic behind as GM left us this.
I first saw Grant in the G-Bs at Mt Gravatt Teachers' College in 1978 where they played the same 3 songs over and over again (Lee Remick, Karen and something else) and have been a fan ever since. It saddens me incredibly that we'll hear no more of his magic. Rest in Peace Grant.
this is like THE go betweens-song; beautiful, haunting, Grant singing most of the lyrics and Robert just sounding cool... :D

Which Tafe is it? I need her help

It's Ultimo TAFE in Sydney.
She teaches subject 7810A "Copyright & Royalties". Must be a good teacher as my son got a Distinction.

I am not the one with "Gay Skinheads" on my you tube collection... It's joined by "Blow Jobs In the Library".

The "female pretending that she can drum" is Lindy Morrison, and she did actually play the drums for The Go-Betweens on their first six records.
Fuckin' amazing song, and great band.

I can't think of anything clever to say to that...
If I'm not mistaken though... she did take Grant McLennan's virginity. Interesting, eh?

Did she? That's disappointing.... Strictly since I know that Robert got 'more ass' than Grant. Maybe you'll know if I'm wrong on this one!
Grant McLennan was a virgin for a little while if I'm not mistaken... at least until his early twenties. Yes?
I don't why I've heard so much about their respective sex lives.
