  • this is like THE go betweens-song; beautiful, haunting, Grant singing most of the lyrics and Robert just sounding cool... :D

  • The drummer, Lindy Morrison, is my son's teacher at TAFE on musical copyright law.

  • Which Tafe is it? I need her help

  • It's Ultimo TAFE in Sydney.

She teaches subject 7810A "Copyright & Royalties". Must be a good teacher as my son got a Distinction.

  • seems a shame that such a wonderful musician has to work at TAFE (no offence TAFE teachers), I just mean if would be nice if she could live off fat royalties like other people (eg Sting). Maybe she likes it. Hope she is still creating music in some form or other.

  • Since when was Grant McClennan gay?

  • Warning: That last comment comes from a, wait for it, Babyshambles fan. Bwaahh ahhhhaa ha.

  • Eh Fuckhead. I was being complimentary of this song. Numbing is a feeling.

I am not the one with "Gay Skinheads" on my you tube collection... It's joined by "Blow Jobs In the Library".

Might need to get a life outside of the internet COCKHEAD.

  • In that case I take it back. But clearly u r a homophobe & my film 'Blow Job in the Library' is avail on myspacetv is u actually wanna check it out b4 u make a comment. But seriously Babyshambles?? Pete's got absoluetely NO talent no matter how u look at it. Ive also got a Sylvester video on my youtube channel. Guess what? Hes GAY too. Grant McClennan was gay too so do u hate the Go-Betweens now?

  • Nothing against gays, just people who don't have an open mind about other people's musical tastes. You've read 1 too many article on Pete Doherty in "New Idea" to cloud any understanding of Pete's talents.

Compare ANY of Pete's lyrics to ANY artist of Today's releases and you will not come close.

The man is a modern day poet, admittingly with a serious drug habit (there, are you glad I said that bit?).

    Tosser...

  • A band doesn't have to ever have "Made it Big" to be loved by those who had the pleasure of discovering them.

  • Great track. Lives with me hauntingly forever.

  • I agree, it's one that can be summed up by one word... Numbing.

I like it when mans are titillating it is so much more promiscuous!

  • far kernel! this song attracts strange comments

  • WONDERFUL SONG!!As many more from this truly magnificent band!

  • That Way and this song are the best from a sublime album as Before Hollywood still is. I was just mentioning today to a friend of mine when I saw r.e.m. for the first time in 1989 and Go-Betweens were the opening. Simply beatiful.

  • Saw the band a few years ago at the Big Day Out, Melbourne. It was one of the most memorable gigs I have witnessed. So happy to see them perform live. A truly classy act! Best Australian band ever!

  • After an hour or so looking at 80's OZ music, I now feel real pity for kids growing up today.

  • The Go-Betweens have never been mainstream. And there is a lot of music nowadays that is worth listen to - it just needs to be discovered.

Btw: My favourite GB track ;-), thanks for posting.

  • Grant's dad was a doctor he died when Grant was young.I think he was a GP

  • You could say that both Grant's dad and Grant died when Grant was, relatively speaking, young.

His own father's early loss brings some meaning to the line "his father's watch, he left it in the showers" -- not sure what. Maybe he took that one to the grave.

  • Not realy my kind of music. but he has got a decent voice, if any one could tell me some information about him, it would be much appreciated. I'm a McLennan and doing some family history research, i noticed that this singer was also a McLennan and i am trying to put it all together see were he comes up in the family tree...

    Many Thanks, Ben McLennan.

  • This song always makes me sad.My son went to his school in Cairns.Edgehill state school.Edgehill is now a trendy suburb it used to cane fields

  • battler65: you really know how to cut a bloke down to size...how do you do it with such limited brain capacity ?????

  • I used to drink with Grant at a bar in Brisbane called Rics in the late 90s. He was a REAL gentleman. He was incredibly well read, and a very gentle, unassuming man. I had spent quite a few sessions on the piss with him, before finally asking him: "what do you do?" He looked at me shyly, and said: "Umm.. I do Music."

Such a modest man. And such a fantastic ear for a melody. I will never forget GW McLennan.

  • Classic song from a classic band....we won't hear from such a fantastic band in a long, long time.

  • Clicks when you snap it...nice!

  • if not mistaken, grant wrote this about his dad, who died when grant was quite young.

    as did grant, dammit-

  • Thanks so much for posting. I can still recall hearing this song for the first time; it was so different from what I was listening to at the time (Minutemen, Replacements). This tune still has a haunting quality about it. Great song, great band.

  • Wonderful, many thanks. As I recall the rest of the album was pretty gash though

  • What they had was great songwriting ability , that's what makes bands great , not technique , any fool caan learn to play an instrument , the Go betweens are one of the great bands of their time because of the songs , thing is they were also great musicians cos they understand music, too many people don't ...

  • Wonderful lyrics. Thank you Grant and Robert, along with Lindy, Amanda et al.

This song, along with Bye Bye Pride and Apology Accepted are in the pantheon of great and magical pop songs.

  • Go weg (3-)

  • The "female pretending that she can drum" is Lindy Morrison, and she did actually play the drums for The Go-Betweens on their first six records.

Fuckin' amazing song, and great band.

Rest in peace, Grant... We miss you.

  • I can't think of anything clever to say to that...

If I'm not mistaken though... she did take Grant McLennan's virginity. Interesting, eh?

We're all slappers these days. I slap on a daily basis.

  • Slap on!!!!!!!!!!

  • Slap on!!!!!!!!!!

  • She took Robert's actually.

  • Did she? That's disappointing.... Strictly since I know that Robert got 'more ass' than Grant. Maybe you'll know if I'm wrong on this one!

Grant McLennan was a virgin for a little while if I'm not mistaken... at least until his early twenties. Yes?

I don't why I've heard so much about their respective sex lives.

  • dont see any clips of you fuckhead bet your wife is fat and ugly isn't she kev now tell the truth now tosser

  • She isn't a great drummer therefore she's a slapper? And she may have been getting lessons, this song was very early in the bands life. Grant (who wrote it) had only been playing guitar for a short time (from bass) and this was one of (if not) the first song he ever wrote. And one of his best. Some musicians just want to get across nice songs, some want to become technically brilliant, both have their place. If you want musical gymnastics this is not the band to listen to.

  • most ppl probably dont want to hear this sort of stuff, but ill just say something personal about why i really love this song, my dad had cancer and passed away when i was younger and just the "his fathers watch, he left it in the shop" lyric means a lot to me..

  • sorry meant to say showers** i know, i know..

  • happy sad haunting unearthly scary lonesome achingly desolate enduring timeless extrasensory challenge to existing notions of the power of song and melody

  • my fav lineup

  • wow,i kinda move still after all these yrs,i remember......

  • I can smell the sweet earth, see cane sparks raining down from the sky, hear the clang of the cane cars shunting. Inspirational!

You Ozzies even had an Ambassador that gave this song to every US Congressperson, as it captures that something special, too bad they haven't figured out how to use CD players yet. Kudos!

  • Brilliant music. Thanks for posting.

  • one of the best songs ever written!

  • For 8 year olds...

  • Listen to this song and tell me it doesn't bring tears to your eyes. Go ahead, tell me, you can't.

  • One of the best nostalgia songs ever written. Always makes me sad but hopeful too.

  • I hear ya. It reminds me of an old friend I haven't seen in years.

  • Yes, I too 've loved this tune since I was a high school girl, and now it's part of my nostalgia.

  • A song you can play over and over again and not get bored!

    Fantastic song!

  • A true classic, i never tire of hearing it.

  • Without doubt one of the best songs of all time

  • ellerine sağlık

  • "alone and so at home"...says it all...classic tune

  • Grant RIP, you were and are a genius

  • Grant lives on through music and fans. This is one of my favorite songs of all time.

  • beautiful, timeless.

and to think at the beginning of the go betweens grant didn't write songs...!

  • Really nice.

    We miss you Grant.

  • This single was my introduction to the Go-Betweens as a college student in 1983. So beautiful and slightly off-kilter; Another timeless song from an outstanding band.

  • This band is still the best.

    Thank you for sharing this!

  • pure brilliance - a jewel of a song - so rare and true.

  • This is gold...Thank you so much for posting it. RIP Grant.

  • I'm not an Aussie but grew up listening to this song as a surfer boy. I learned the lyrics to this song and it truly gave me a perspective of growing the Australian countryside.

    Thanks iteglund!

    ~geovision

  • Sadly I didn't know Grant had died until played this. One of, if not THE most unheralded great bands of all time. Fond memories of listening to thses guys in the mid 80's when I was still cool.

  • rest in peace...

and thanks for your work, grant.

  • thank you, thank you, thank you

  • This is the music of my youth, enshrined in memories, the go-betweens were a breath of fresh air,God bless them and Grant ,we never forget you....

  • I had forgotten what a great song this is. Friends, we must truly make the most of each moment in our lives and try and leave some magic behind as GM left us this.

  • Great great song.

It's always sounded beautiful, but it's breaking my heart to hear it now...

  • "That time was bad, so I knew where I was, alone and so at...." we miss you grant.

  • Utterly sublime.

  • What a wonderful song... I'd never heard it before, but now I've discovered something special.

The video looks like it could have been made last month, instead of 23 years ago. Life is too brief.

    Thank you for sharing this.

  • I first saw Grant in the G-Bs at Mt Gravatt Teachers' College in 1978 where they played the same 3 songs over and over again (Lee Remick, Karen and something else) and have been a fan ever since. It saddens me incredibly that we'll hear no more of his magic. Rest in Peace Grant.

  • Gutted...completely gutted... this song alone meant the world to me at 15.

It still does... Rest in Peace Grant.

  • Great video, great band, great music. Rest in peace, dear McLennan. Thanks for all your beautiful songs. They saved my life.

  • Goodbye, and thank you for leaving this to us. RIP Grant McLennan 1958-2006.

  • I'm dreaming !!!!
