@hyperchick911 The kitten was not being mishandled. It is a wild animal, and has been raised by its mother and likely never handled by a human before this exam. It is being supported correctly, and held in an appropriate fashion to protect it and the handlers. Zoo vets frequently have to sedate their patients to examine them because even the babies have instincts which cause them to be afraid, even when they are being handled safetly and comfortably.
@lisaandtiki Implanting ocelot embryos into domestic cats is not common, & has never successfuly been performed. There are differences in the uterine environments, & the best environment to put an ocelot embryo into is an ocelot uterus. Extracting oocytes requires surgery, which is not w/o risks, so reducing the chance of the embryo developing by placing it in a domestic wouldn't help the endangered species. Also, cat births are low risk, so birthing harming the queen is not a concern.
I really really hate how the kitten was held, the lady like, held onto its fur tightly, as I could tell. And it was probably meowing because it hurt. Shameeee. :(
@hyperchick911 it actually should not hurt at all because the skin there is extra stretchy because the mother carries them like that with her teeth when the cub is young
@lisaandtiki Yes, this is a very common technique and has been around since the 90's. A domestic cat only provides the uterus and nutrients for the fertilized egg to grow, which is similar to an Ocelot's womb. It helps keeps endangered species alive without endangering the ones existing by putting them through birthing.
