I have followed football since the 1960s, as an England supporter I think England over rate themselves. I think in this match Poland were scared to attack England, and the two best teams at that world cup were Poland and Holland. Every world cup England have expectations but over rate themselves
england pretty much blew qualification long before this game - the lost away to Poland and drew 1-1 with Wales in Wembley. Poland were arguably the best team at the 1974 World Cup Finals finished top scorers and winning 6 of the 7 games, they played there - with a waterlogged pitch being to blame for their narrow loss to west germany.
Nearly all Tomaszewski's saves were relatively easy. He did well byt England's shots were pretty basic. Hunter's tackle makes no sense whatsoever, God knows what he was doing almost standing on the ball.
To the people here who say that Poles fought for England during the war. I have great respect for the bravery for what Poles did during the war. But the Poles rightly fought for Poland. If Germany hadn't invaded Poland but instead just fought Britain and France the Poles wouldn't have fought.
Im 1000% sure that if Poles promise england to help we would be there !!! and yes we fought for england nation toooo and for free Europe ! it us who first rised against Germany it us who said first NO to takeing our freedom ,not like some of our niegbours who welcomed HItlers army with open arms!!!
@Noid111 I think you are mistaken first of all... England and Poland had a pact that if germany will attack us Engladn will help us but england thought that if germany will take over poland wont attack any1 in west Europe ...I was listening radio audition when the war begun polsih nation was soooo happy full of hopes when we were told that englan is sending bakc up for us but it was only EMPTY WORDS...
For those of us who were there, either watching it on the box as I was or at the ground...... It was a feeling that stayed for quite some time. Don't forget, Poland went onto beat Italy in the Group game (we would have been playing against them had we beat the Poles) 2-1.... again Tomaszewski played a blinder... he did make some great saves, but a lot of the stuff we fired in was straight at him so he looked like he'd made a great save.
Funny how Norman Hunter gets all the blame when it really was the great Peter Shilton who maked the biggest mistake. Then again it dosen't go down well in the history books, if one of the England greats goes down as the man who cost England the place in the World Cup. Then it's easier to pick on a player who is just remembered as a great player for Leeds and not England.

Hunter said that he never played more one sided game in his life, i disagree, you mean beating austria 7:0 just few days before was less one sided?!? the issue is that this solar system had not seen so many wasted opportunities in one game. don't feel bad england, you lost to the 3rd best country in the world - viva '74.
calling pols - animals was a mistake since they saved your ass during 2nd world war and firing ramsey was your biggest mistake. the point was brian clough - the real clown.
@staszekgobi I don't know if you noticed, but before Britain declared war on Germany TWO countries invaded Poland - Germany and Soviet Russia. We may have helped to get the Germans out of Poland, but we sure as fuck left the country to rot under Stalin as soon as we had done. So how exactly did Britain save Poland during the 2nd world war? The Poles who fought bravely in our military did much more to save British freedoms than the Brits did for the Poles.
I always thought that Tomaszewski was an overrated goalie. He was, as many polish goalkeepers, very athletic and this mainly saved him, because he had weak fundamentals. He would stop an impossible ball one day, and the next day he would create many hairy situations because of his sloppines. Overall a good goalie, especally when he was in his mood, but nowhere near Maier or Zoff.
@Crox300 That's okay, because Lato couldn't score when he was alone again against Shilton two minutes later. And at that time those fouls only merited yellow cards anyway.
Dzisiaj by dostał czerwoną. Polska miała oczywiście karnego. A co do meczu na Wembley to Lato wychodził drugi raz sam na sam i nie strzelił.
norman hunter mistackled but c'mon!, peter shilton should have nightmares about his mistake, that was shocking!, poland were a good side that year, the world cup shows it. if youre looking for someone to blame it was our goalkeeper.
How ungrateful and forgetful,England or should i say,the Fools Association and they sill are...the guy(Sir Alf) won the world cup for us then we turn round and call him a joke..i'm ashamed to be english.
Never underestimate a good goalkeeper and LUCK. Terrible errror down the right side. Shows you when you are attacking 95% of the time, you can get caught out!

you have to admire the way polands number 11 made a run off the ball that created the space for domarski to score wrong..... not only hunters mistake what about the long haired idiot that lost the ball in the first place and shilton under threat from clemence tried to make a fancy save sir alf ramsey sacked after losing 7or 8 matches in108 or109 matches in charge emlyn hughes spot on we all know what FA stnds for and i am scottish
@TheStandofTheLastGuy They had to face two very good teams before 1974 and 1978, with outstandings goalkeepers and forwards. 1973: Poland with Tomaszewsky and an incredible attack with Lato, Szarmach, Deyna and Gadocha. Later, in 1977, Italy with Dino Zoff (maybe the best goalkeeper ever), a good deffense and a couple of sensational forwads like Rossi and Bettega. Very bad luck for just qualification groups.
I cant belive the corruptiond estroyed Polish football like that there was a World Cup winning potential but some people had to fill their pcokets with somebodys els talent and now Poland is lower rated than jamajca GOD DAMN IT ;(((((
after pummeling Poland in that way, what we didn't know was they were good enough to fnish third in the world cup six months later. by the way, shilton was as much to blame for the goal as hunter. and yes they did treat ramsey badly
@martynhanson Pummeling? Sure, if you watch a 3 minute clip... You had 5-6 great chances, but no one on one, ay? We had three 100% ones. The goal, Lato one on one with Shilton - got overly excited (it was at 1:0), and then being 'rugby style' caught, going all alone... And the penalty? That foul was clearly outside the penalty area (why was there no TV replay?!). It wasn't a miracle, you screwed it up big way, lads.
@CiaranMcVeigh actually the match was shown on ITV and Hugh Johns was the commentator, Barry Davis recorded this. Hugh Johns was the much better commentator
Tego jak jeden angliK zatrzymał naszego rodaka bezczelnie zatrzymując go niczym w piłce ręcznej już nie pokazali, a śmiać się śmiali z polaków w tych ich głupich żartach ! POLAND POLSKA ~!~
Most sad is,that we still living a match played 37 years ago:(.Today polish footbal not exist,is on the bottom. We should ask ourselves where we are today, what playing our national team and clubs, and where is England today!Their reaction was immediately, and brought effects, our last achievment was brown medal World Championship in 1982!!!(sorry,silver in Olympic 1992,but who care...).Nearly 20 years ,when our footbal it's a shame!
Is there enyone who could make me sure what is Cloug saying in 1:44. Please help :D I'm pretty sure he said: ''I have a nail here in my hand, and I want to go into a polish coffin or - perhaps insert outs- ?(that last part isn't clear for me)? thanks, guys.
He said " I have a nail here in me hand, and I want it to go into a Polish coffin -or perhaps Sir Alf's." He was mad because he wanted to be the England coach but was turned down in favour of Sir Alf Ramsey.
@lukemomodujr he wasn't turned down in fabour of Alf Ramsey, that appointment was made years ago. But they did appoint Don Revie instead of him after this match. Also think he went for the job again in 1978, but they went for someone else again. Shame
lol like fuck! We were a decent side yeah... but Holland were far better. And the Germans were their ruthless and efficient selves to beat the Dutch. Poland gave an excellent account of themselves too. We would have reached the second group stage. But we wouldn't have reached the final.
polich football was very fantastic and beautiful. Unfortunately, now there is worst. We have several really good players, but pzpn it morons. one of fairest goalkeeper in the world is Artur Boruc and he play in Celtic Glasgow. greetings from poland ;)
The FA paid the Wally with the brolly two and a half million pounds compensation when he was sacked in November 2007 after 18 months in charge.... they paid Alf Ramsey £8,000 when they sacked him, after 11 and a half years in charge, after winning the World Cup for England, and taking them to the quarter finals in 1970, and they did well in the European Championships in 1968..... seems fair doesn't it?
Alf Ramsey had to go! Sure, if they knew that England lost (3:1 on aggregate) to a really good team, maybe... but at that point we were a nobody...
But to all fairness, sure it was a one sided game, but Lato was alone in front of Shillton at 1:0, and missed it terribly! Then, would've been the second time, if not fauled, so we had THREE 100% chances! England had dozen, but not a single 'one on one'. Also, the penalty was controversial (no TV replay?). I think we should remember also that...
Unlucky though England were, we should not forget that Poland finished third in the world cup of 1974, so perhaps not so bad a team. I loved the clip of Cloughie giving post match analysis, following which Brian Moore and the Doog got quite stroppy with him. Alas, we will never know for sure whether or not OBE would have made a good England manager!
And where the fuck is the part when Lato got jumped on by McFarland when breaking away for 1on1 with the keeper?? Clearly a red card behaviour...um no wait, he only got a yellow INSANE!
what did ted croker know about football to sack the greatest english manager ever was so short sighted it bordered on criminal and it set us back in world football 13 years when bobby robson's england nearly put things right in 1986 ted croker should have quit as boss of the fa to let someone who knew football take charge. and to appoint joe mercer as temporary manager and then don revie(great club manager but england boss ...never ) it should have gone to brian clough if anyone
The F.A. shafted Sir Alf. He got a £1,200 per-year pension from the cunts and struggled for decades financially. The dear departed Bobby Robson paid Sir Alf's nursing home bills in his final years, even though Ramsey was disparaging of Robson when he took over at Ipswich whom Ramsey had managed with great success prior to becoming England manager.
I'dont fuckin care....for me England was, is and always will be the greatest team... All english players earns more than 100000/week, no wonder they are not 100% determined to play for national team, cuz it they were nobody at this planet could win against them. Greetings from Poland
i remember that game well i will never forget jan tomaszeski the goalkeeper brilliant performance.one of the best i seen at wembley

when I say pummelling I mean in the play - like a boxer on points.
By the way, I am not a flag waver. I don't say things because I love my country in that way but I think you do.
martynhanson 1 year ago
after pummeling Poland in that way, what we didn't know was they were good enough to fnish third in the world cup six months later. by the way, shilton was as much to blame for the goal as hunter. and yes they did treat ramsey badly
martynhanson 1 year ago

DoroniaB 2 years ago
@DoroniaB
He said " I have a nail here in me hand, and I want it to go into a Polish coffin -or perhaps Sir Alf's." He was mad because he wanted to be the England coach but was turned down in favour of Sir Alf Ramsey.
lukemomodujr 1 year ago
@lukemomodujr he wasn't turned down in fabour of Alf Ramsey, that appointment was made years ago. But they did appoint Don Revie instead of him after this match. Also think he went for the job again in 1978, but they went for someone else again. Shame

lol like fuck! We were a decent side yeah... but Holland were far better. And the Germans were their ruthless and efficient selves to beat the Dutch. Poland gave an excellent account of themselves too. We would have reached the second group stage. But we wouldn't have reached the final.

@Darwinion poland ended up in the group of death in 74 with Argentina and Italy and i dont think England would have came out of that group

Alas, we will never know for sure whether or not OBE would have made a good England manager!

what did ted croker know about football to sack the greatest english manager ever was so short sighted it bordered on criminal and it set us back in world football 13 years when bobby robson's england nearly put things right in 1986 ted croker should have quit as boss of the fa to let someone who knew football take charge. and to appoint joe mercer as temporary manager and then don revie(great club manager but england boss ...never ) it should have gone to brian clough if anyone
ellandrd1306 2 years ago
The F.A. shafted Sir Alf.

@GordonMorrice : Shows what a gentleman Robson was. Got flak in '90 from journalists even though it was the best performance of England since '66.
