@slugworth28 Not exactly. They weren't on tour there. Ray Davies was returning from vacation in Australia where he was visiting his sister, and on the way back to the UK he stopped for a short time in India, where he wrote this song.
@skeletonkey6 I just read about that today myself! Not everyone realizes that this song predated Norwegian Wood AND had a direct influence on the Beatles.
@progreadicto are you retarded, the Beatles were the first rock band to use an actual sitar on a recording, this song just has a guitar emulating a sitar.
@doobysnaks and who matters?, what is the importance of use a sitar?, if you dont know how to compose a masterpiece, dosent matter if you use a symphonic orchestra. the beatles used a sitar in a 2 minute pop song, other artists like sandy bull (maybe you dont know him cos beatles fans dont know nothing but beatles) used a laud in a 20 minute indian raga that was far away from his time (1962) when the beatles was singing stupid pop songs.
@progreadicto I'll repeat my first statement, are you retarded? As I clearly indicated before, the Beatles were the first rock band to use a sitar in a recording, but hey nice try at pretending to be musically enlightened.. and for you information just because a song is 20 minutes long doesn't make it good, the Beatles changed music forever and most of their songs were under four minutes. Care to throw any more bullshit my way?? ;)
@doobysnaks i repeat my statement too, whats the importance of use a sitar?, is only an instrument like harmonica or guitar or laud, an instrument dont turn a pop song into a masterpiece, and what with the first person who use feedback or fuzz guitar or synths or marimbas, no one matters only cos they are not "the beatles"?. the 20 minute composition i was talking about was truly revolutionary, a blend of jazz, raga, stream of consciousness, ethnic music, etc.
@doobysnaks "the beatles changed music forever" is a typical phrase of ignorant people or deranged fans who reduce "music" to "pop music", the beatles changed pop music (with sgt. peppers), maybe. rock is much more than pop, the beatles music is only melodies with clasical or pesudo-avantgarde arrangments. there were several bands better than beatles, more original, making masterpieces that was more close to jazz and clasical music than to rock and roll. maybe you dont know them
@progreadicto I can't tell if you're a troll, or just incredibly stupid... The Beatles ARE a rock band, John and Paul were teenagers during the original rock n roll explosion, Elvis, Chuck Berry etc were their fucking idols! Sure the Beatles' made pop songs, but they also made songs in just about every other genre as well..
@doobysnaks no my friend, maybe we dont have the same point of view of what is "pop music", pop is not a genre, dont have a particular "sound", i asociate pop to "cliches", 4 example: prog rock became a trivial genre when musicians reduce it to copy clasical music and sing complicated lyrics, another level for pop music. the same in hard rock when a song became to be: riff+verse+chorus+solo. genres like grunge or punk also became pop. is the power of the consumism.
@progreadicto Pop is a genre, look it up, just because the Beatle's music was popular doesn't make them a pop band, if that was the case then Led Zep would be a pop band as well. And 'cliches'?? The Beatles' rewrote the rule book for rock, and music in general in the sixties, they are anything but cliche,
@progreadicto 'rock is much more than pop' < < that's because pop isn't rock, rock is rock retard.. Search the songs helter skelter, dear prudence, happy birthday, come together, and then come back and tell me the Beatles aren't rock. Also the Beatles only did a handful of avantegard songs, but you seem to have a problem with writing the truth.
@doobysnaks like i told you pop music is a simple way to introduce people into music, if you want to introduce people into clasical music, you take a simple song an arranged it with symphonic orchestra or violins or something like that. i had listened all of their 13 albums man, i was a huge fan of them, revolution 9 was the only avantgarde song of them, carnival of light had never been published.
@progreadicto And I'm not saying Beatles are the only genius band, Led Zep, Soundgarden, The Kinks obviously, Faith No More, Jimi Hendrix experience, Rory Gallagher, Reuben etc. etc. are all bands/artists just as good as the Beatles.. But the Beatles are and always will be a rock band, a very original and innovative rock band that changed the course of musical history for ever - so please go learn some facts before you start talking shit!
@progreadicto And why is something a masterpiece because it's closer to jazz and classical? Those are two of the most boring and overrated genres of music out there.. Seriously you're coming across as some kind of snobby (yet retarded) douchebag, who for some reason really hates the Beatles.. Did Paul Mccartney fuck your mother or something? ;)
@doobysnaks i dont hate the beatles, if you dont know how to apreciate clasical music or jazz is only cos you dont analize music, you only enjoy it!, for people like you music is an entertainment and not an art, a real musician made music for him, for a need to expression, not for "fans". music is for trying to understand what artist want to told us, for create original compositions, in rock there's few geniuses: frank zappa, dylan or tom waits for exmple
@progreadicto I don't appreciate Jazz and classical because I think it's boring and pretentious, simple as. And I only enjoy music?? What the hell does that mean, enjoying music is the whole point of listening to it in the first place.. listen I know that music can be art, The Beatles music is art so your argument is total bullshit to begin with,
@progreadicto and before you try and insult my musical understanding again, I'll let you know that I'm a guitarist and songwriter myself, who's been playing for ten years.. I love music as an art form, as a hobby, as a job, so please stop spreading misinformation and go learn some fucking facts. >< ...
@doobysnaks ok, we can spend hours on this discution, it's obvious we have very different points of view about what is rescatable and what is not, we will never match. you dont know how many beatles fans i had troubled in youtube, if you know music theory, well, but knowing music theory is not necesary for an artistical appreciation of a composition, if you use rare tempos or instruments or studio tricks well, but this dont necesarily turn you into a great musician.
@progreadicto It's not a discussion, you're an idiot... 'this dont necessarily turn you into a great musician' - John Lennon and Paul Mccartney are two of the most famous songwriters in the world.. THAT'S why they're great musicians, because of their songwriting talent. They mixed amazing songs with the studio techniques of George Martin, Geoff Emerick etc.... they didn't become the biggest band in the world for no reason, it happened because they were really talented musicians.
@doobysnaks i have the same rights of calling you an idiot, all depends on what's your vission. songwriting is much more than writing a melody and arranged it with clasical music or pesudo-avantgarde. martin was more genius than the 4 beatles togheter, he was the real "genius" cos he arranged their mediocre songs and turn them into decent music
@progreadicto You don't have the same rights to call me an idiot, when you spell vision with an extra s, you fucking moron... Learn some basic spelling and grammar before you come talking shit on youtube. 'he arranged their mediocre songs and turn them into decent music' < < The Beatles had George Martin there to produce the records, and that's exactly what he did, stop lying to yourself you delusional fool.. but hey thanks for admitting that the Beatles made 'decent music'. :)
@doobysnaks Mate what does spelling have to do with intelligence? Have you considered that English may not be his native language, or that he may have misspelled? And it's funny how you state YOUR OPINION as a God stated absolute.
So you're saying that not speaking English as a first language, gives you an excuse to spread lies about the Beatles and their music? And I never said my opinion was absolute, I just hate people that don't know what they're talking about.
@1GoodRiddance The kinks were a band that pioneered social comment about Englands class system. The poverty that persisted for so long after WW2 was shouldered by the working class for so long and did so much damage.
Unhelpful comments from the pseudo elite are contrary to the entire spirit of the Kinks.
To put it bluntly comments about spelling are for tossers trying to be better than....It was nice to notice your spirit of the times comment back to that wanker
@doodahgal actually ticket to ride came out in april 65 as a single, and see my friends came out in july. just correcting. who really cares who came up with it first, both great bands
Actually, The Beatles used an Indian-like droning sound on 'Ticket To Ride' which came out almost four months before 'See My Friends'. Also, The Yardbirds used a sitar-like guitar effect on 'Heart Full Of Soul', released a month or two before the Kinks' single. (In fact, there is an outtake of 'Heart Full Of Soul' that used a real sitar.)
The sound of the sitar done 3 YEARS BEFORE the beatles !!!
