It's supposed to be kinda like Kafka... or like a hallucinatory experience. I think the WTF factor is intentionally large, since he's a spirit with no general direction; since he has to wander until he's done, he (and the audience) are whirled around in existence

@zmoore83 It really isn't nonsensical at all. Look at it for what it is; a man who wants vengeance on structure, order, tradition.

Doomed to remake the same mistakes he made in life to deter him, but never relenting as the order begins to disappear (hence why his victims appear as SWAT during feudal Japan or why Samurai were in a highway) and structure begins to unravel.

Look at the film as if you are watching Buddha's journey, but inverted.

I'm a fan of Miike, but I was disappointed with this movie. The concept was interesting, but the execution left something to be desired.
