I am in the Army and I was at the FOB with MAJ Dennis and met nubs and played with him and heard his story. He honestly is one of the best dogs I've ever met and I hope where ever he is now he and MAJ Dennis are doing great.

However, usually when one appeals to pathos over logos- i.e. to feel good vs. to think critically- one invariably works to change a given perspective through emotionally manipulating a set of circumstances wherein social context ceases to actually have one. This is a clear example of a "glittering generality". Here is the oversimplified barebones logic: dog elicts sympathy, US marine cares for dog, therefore the US marines are sympatheic characters who act in the best interest of others.

One finds an analogous function in a "war for freedom"- neither "war" nor "freedom" are value neutral terms, war arguably has negative connotations whereas freedom, the opposite, thus a "war for freedom" is one whose very formal logic mirrors that which is depicted above. Hell, who can disagree with a canine-loving hearts of gold US marine corps spreading freedom and democracy to tyrannical backwards people, who consequently, also abuse dogs!
