I can see what happened here. The producers let him through the first round to make a fool of him (for a laugh and ratings). With a combination of him being a very kind soul and the judges sympathizing with him they let him through. It was a good deed. The reason I say this is that there are many people that can sing better than Garet that don't make it through. This was a very interesting audition.
