Can anyone tell me if the ferret odor is bad enough to not want to buy one? I want one bad but how bad is the smell. Is there a way to make the smell less intense? If so, what is the best method. Please reply. Thanks

@jthusmann40 The odor is pretty bad, I've got 4 and they do smell. Getting them neutered/spayed gets rid of some of the smell but not all - you can bath them too, which helps a little, but if you wash them too much their skin goes dry, and the skin starts to produce oils to protect it so washing too much can make them smell too.

If you can't stand smelly pets then they're probably not for you, but if you love them as much as I do, then it doesn't matter. :)

@RandleSnipes ,no they are not semi wild creatures,you may be thinking of the black-footed ferret,which are on the endangered list,these are domesticated ferrets,they have been domesticated for over 2 thousand years.and i have had them for 25 yrs.you cant handle them too rough because you can easily dislocate their backbone.

@RandleSnipes Actually ferrets are quite domesticated, and have been for thousands of years. Just like dogs, they have no survival skills because of this. You may be thinking of black-footed ferrets and european polecats.. they're wild, distant relatives of domesticated ferrets. Saying they're semi-wild animals because of their polecat/black-footed ancestry is like saying dogs are semi-wild because they're distant relatives of wolves.
