Teacher "X" teaches 5 classes. He teaches 3 Algebra classes, 1 Advanced Algebra class, and 1 remedial class. His first four classes are okay, but his last class is utter chaos!

@Mrshibbyshibby It is true that a child's home life needs to nurtured. It is true that there are many unfortunate aspects to our culture. That does not change the fact that we need a way to assure that teachers are doing their jobs. Teachers need to be held accountable, no excuses by the teachers or the Teacher's Union. It is their job to overcome outside effects on the student and motivate them to learn, no matter the social impediments. Schools have skirted accountability long enough.
I will respectfully disagree toward your part on inspiration. I believe that teachers should be required to teach their curriculum nothing short of it, and if at all possible anything they want more than it. Having just graduated from high school this past June, I have seen that all a teacher can do is present the information, give students the opportunity to ask for help if and when they need it, but after that it is up to the student to take advantage of their classes.

That way schools have to compete for students & the ones that fail to educate are weeded out by the parents. It will never be like a competative business because the government has nothing to loose & essentially run a monopoly since private schools offer very little competition. 1) A massive overhaul or outright disbanding of teacher's union. Now ,as a "liberal" I'm supposed to love unions, but like everything else they are too easily corrupted.
2) Get rid of the bullshit "education" major in college. If you need a math teacher get someone with a degree in the mathematics field. None of this "one size fits all" crap...

I didn't watch the video, or really care to, because its not going to change anything. I just wanted to express how disgusted I am by the ignorance in a majority of the comments that have been made. Education is the stepping stone to correct almost all of the problems the world faces, and these comments prove children aren't the only ones who need a better education.

The majority of the teachers fired were OLDER, BLACK WOMEN who had a vested interest in the community. They were fully credentialled and had years of experience.

Teacher "X" teaches 5 classes. He teaches 3 Algebra classes, 1 Advanced Algebra class, and 1 remedial class. His first four classes are okay, but his last class is utter chaos!
Why?
Is it because the class has 43 students instead of 35?
Or maybe because the majority of the students don't speak English?
Could it be that it's late in the day and the kids are tired?
Or maybe, just maybe, the kids are DOWN-RIGHT LAZY?

People with fancy titles by their name, but do NOTHING that benefits students.

@fuckutubeagain by the way, No Child Left Behind hasn't helped anyone. The program is a bunch of useless spending, blindly being used to try to improve the likely hood of students to succeed when the reality is that the surrounding society and culture that a child developed in is what will have the biggest impact on their success. For a child to succeed, they must be taught to succeed, something that is rarely done today and something that money can't buy.

@Mrshibbyshibby It is true that a child's home life needs to nurtured. It is true that there are many unfortunate aspects to our culture. That does not change the fact that we need a way to assure that teachers are doing their jobs. Teachers need to be held accountable, no excuses by the teachers or the Teacher's Union. It is their job to overcome outside effects on the student and motivate them to learn, no matter the social impediments. Schools have skirted accountability long enough.

I will respectfully disagree toward your part on inspiration. I believe that teachers should be required to teach their curriculum nothing short of it, and if at all possible anything they want more than it. Having just graduated from high school this past June, I have seen that all a teacher can do is present the information, give students the opportunity to ask for help if and when they need it, but after that it is up to the student to take advantage of their classes.

Everyone knows people need education in order to increase their chances for financial prosperity. The president has an excellent plan. Education does have a positive impact on the economy, unemployment, and the job market. Lack of education is partially the fault of why we are in this recession. Afterall, I assume no one wants to ride on a plane with an uneducated pilot. Maybe you?

Since when is science fiction more important than our nations welfare, security, and health? Government funded research/experiments need to be strictly regulated, approved and, it's a constitutional violation to utilize those ideas w/o public consent! @wilmer5562 That's why I like the charter system. Each student is assigned a certain amount of money & parents choose what private school their child goes to. That way schools have to compete for students & the ones that fail to educate are weeded out by the parents. Yes that's a socialist system but it's less socialist, less expensive, & more effective than a government run system.

It is about time some one from the admitted left side of the education issue is honest. Unions may get a teacher collective bargaining rights and then better wages but how has that "ever" benefited the education of children?

I'm going to get ripped on this since I lean heavily towards the left, but there are two good places to start if you really want to reform education.
1) A massive overhaul or outright disbanding of teacher's union. Now ,as a "liberal" I'm supposed to love unions, but like everything else they are too easily corrupted.
2) Get rid of the bullshit "education" major in college. If you need a math teacher get someone with a degree in the mathematics field. None of this "one size fits all" crap...

Ben Franklin was one of those proponents and he donated Bibles and cash to insure all public schools libraries would have Bibles in them.

As a British person I'm truly jealous, anyone who criticises Obama, even with the (very rare) valid criticisms needs to look around the world and back through history. @xWren I never said i supported Obama or the Democrats, i just said respect his position. You DO NOT have to respect his decision, but that is exactly what makes our country so dynamic and so great. And it doesnt take a "far right neoconservative" to vote for war. Members of the tea party offer plenty of solutions to reforming education like school vouchers where students can go to any school they want whether private or public and the money follows them. The rich bankers, CEOs, corrupt politicians, and bribed judges have all become the robber barons of our time. Obama is just another crony except he's half black. So speaking against him is racist. ok mr. obama, where are you pooling all of this money from? are you pooling it from the enormous amount of debt you are forcing this country into? also giving grants for teachers being what they should be, is only re-enforcing the tenure problem. Once a teacher gets tenure they often stop caring on how well they teach. Change this, change that, how about taking care of this country for a change? 2 years seems like it's going to take forever...

well, I don't see why everyone is complaining about his domestic policy, at least he trys to make some social reforms that are standards in most western european countries anyways (yes I'm from europe). But what reallly shocks me are his last foreign policy decisions: the refuse to banish cluster bombs (along with China and Russia by the way) which injure so many innocents in every war and the SWIFT-agreement, as if terrorism excisted only in europe ....

i think education is good but we don't need to have 4-5 year old kids have a 8 hour school days its like they have a full time job. we only live once let kids have a little more time to enjoy being a kid.

I Like the speech overall to some degree.BUT why is he empasizing "BLACKS" so much. That irritated me throughout the WHOle speech. It irritated me how a "physically lookin black" guy was emphasizing black %'s. just saying not racist or anything. And IF you did listen to him, Obama has he right thoughts, but im wondering if he knows the consequences of this choice of investing on education, when our economy is already bad as it is.SURE education is economy in such ways but now isnt the right time
