You know what, to my "Western" ears these songs all "wishy-washy" without strong melodies for the most part. I don't find them catchy tunes, so I think the love of AR Rahman's Hindi songs is not universal. The hit songs from Slumdog Millionaire's are quite different (and I like them!), it's easy to see that he was trying to appeal much more to Western tastes.
