  • It was Benny's great sense of TIMING that made him a superlative comedian and a very fine musician. He has a great rhythmic sense and his comedic violin turns were appreciated by amateur and professional alike.

  • Pure gold. What a funny sketch. No wonder Jack Benny was so popular in his time. And his violin skills were not that bad either. Of course he was first a comedian and made the violin bow screech, and mistakes across the fingerboard, but that was part of the show. He actually played quite well in the intermediate level, and practiced the instrument frequently. In his late years he was the owner of a Strad.

  • the king having fun...

  • Ha ha ha, briliant! 7:20 - 7:28

  • Benny was such a craftsman -- able to take a simple premise and make it very, very funny. He was a master at letting the audience in on the joke. Interestingly, he owned a Strad for years.

  • Heifetz gets some big laughs here! Love this...

  • Raven Garland

  • Edward Arnold is emcee for this segment because this was originally broadcast on Armed Forces Radio's "COMMAND PERFORMANCE", a weekly variety show featuring virtually every "name" celebrity in radio, motion pictures, stage, opera and concerts- heard ONLY by our military forces overseas during World War II...and preserved on transcription discs.

  • it feels like Heifetz went on being serious and was blind sided... LOL - how funny. :D

  • where can i get tat piece? to a wild rose..anyone no ???

  • @Flaminggential Edward MacDowell's "To a Wild Rose". Popular piano piece from the early 20th Century. It's out there, still in print. This violin version is an arrangement.

  • wat was th esong they were playing ?..something something to the wild rose or something? anyone no?

  • Great! I can never get tired listening to it. Thank you for posting it!

  • Way too funy! I laughed all the way. Thanks for posting it.

  • Wow. Never heard this before. Like the Issac Stern and Giselle Mckenzie this was so funny I cried with laughter.

  • Priceless!

  • I think that's Edward Arnold. Anyway, a great performance.!!!

  • This is wonderful! I'm guessing the announcer is Arthur Godfrey.

  • This is hilarious!!! I can't imagine Heifetz doing this :) Laughed the whole time!

  • This is great, a glimpse into the past. I love it.

  • Surprisingly Benny doesn't play the piece all that badly

  • "Honest folks, can you tell the difference?" Ha ha!

Seriously, Benny loved the violin, and could play it better than he usually let on on his show. He loved it when he had a chance to have one of the greats like Heifitz or Issac Stern on his show.

  • Haha,

Heifetz totally owned Benny at 8:20

  • Nio wonder Mr. Benny's radio work lasted so long. This sketch was hilarious. I think I even heard announncer Edward Arnold laughing in the background. Great stuff. Thanks!

  • That's close enough...I think!

  • Funny as all gittout!! LOLROTF

  • When was this recorded?

  • Thank you so much for sharing this. So amazing...and hilarious!

  • A masterpiece.!!! Thank you angus.
