It was Benny's great sense of TIMING that made him a superlative comedian and a very fine musician. He has a great rhythmic sense and his comedic violin turns were appreciated by amateur and professional alike.
Pure gold. What a funny sketch. No wonder Jack Benny was so popular in his time. And his violin skills were not that bad either. Of course he was first a comedian and made the violin bow screech, and mistakes across the fingerboard, but that was part of the show. He actually played quite well in the intermediate level, and practiced the instrument frequently. In his late years he was the owner of a Strad.
Benny was such a craftsman -- able to take a simple premise and make it very, very funny. He was a master at letting the audience in on the joke. Interestingly, he owned a Strad for years.
Edward Arnold is emcee for this segment because this was originally broadcast on Armed Forces Radio's "COMMAND PERFORMANCE", a weekly variety show featuring virtually every "name" celebrity in radio, motion pictures, stage, opera and concerts- heard ONLY by our military forces overseas during World War II...and preserved on transcription discs.
@Flaminggential Edward MacDowell's "To a Wild Rose". Popular piano piece from the early 20th Century. It's out there, still in print. This violin version is an arrangement.
"Honest folks, can you tell the difference?" Ha ha!
Seriously, Benny loved the violin, and could play it better than he usually let on on his show. He loved it when he had a chance to have one of the greats like Heifitz or Issac Stern on his show.
Nio wonder Mr. Benny's radio work lasted so long. This sketch was hilarious. I think I even heard announncer Edward Arnold laughing in the background. Great stuff. Thanks!
Jack appeared on What's my line, and signed in as Heifitz.
