It was composed in about 1916 by Mykola Leontovich, a Ukrainian Orthodox priest, though the four-note motif used throughout the song was extirpated from a pagan New Year's chant called "Schendryck". Sometime in the thirties, when it was introduced to the U.S., and was given new lyrics that have nothing whatsoever to do with the original.

@DomSpens John Williams did not write this music, it's not his - he simply arranged it whereas Leontovich is the original composer and this music will always be his regardless who arranged it. I also cringe when the original composer is hardly ever credited. And btw, being familar with the original Ukrainian version, I can tell you there wasn't much arranging to be done by Mr. Willams. This version barely differes from original. In fact, to my untrained ears, there is no difference at all.
