It actually came out in the 80's originally in Japan, the manga came out in mid 70's. So it's even older than that.

Anyways, Goku isn't human, he's what's known as a "saya-jin", translated to English would be something like "Saya being". They turn into what's known as Super-saya-jin and they gain a lot of strength almost instantaneously and their hair stands upward and becomes yellow.

Goku isn't the only one who can become a Supersayajin, but he's the first in thousands of years.
