The influence of Lily Pons is very clear here. Durbin was a talent to reckon with but film fame kept her from a career in opera. She also gave her all to her films and her music but she never liked Hollywood much and earlier than anticipated left her career for marriage and family. By all accounts she never had regrets.
My Great Uncle Aquiles used to play this for us on his piano. It was his sister's (my grandma) favorite. The room would be filled with all of us crying, just because of the sentimentality of it all.... And hearing Ms. Durbin's version makes this song even more special, cause I love her acting, singing! I never knew she did a version of this song!
This beautiful song will always remain in my heart........my father's favorite.......he always loves to sing it........Thanks for posting this great classic song.
What has being Mexican to do with Ponce? He wrote this beautiful song for all people, men or women, who have the sensitivity to appreciate it. Personally, Ponce makes me want to be a more sensitive person.
Thanks for uploading this! There should be much more of Ponce's pieces online. I recorded and uploaded some, but can't do everything at the same time ;-) !
I've always thought this was one of Deanna's loveliest performances. A fine example of her uniquely artless, unaffected approach to classical singing. I've heard several performances of this beautiful song by such notable singers as Lily Pons, Bidu Sayao, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Beverly Sills and Renata Tebaldi and Deanna's, for me, is easily the best. She and Sayao are the only ones I've heard who serve the song rather than the singer, and the result is sublime.
Interesting that you chose to post this one. It is among my favorite Durbin performances. I'm moved every time I hear it. If Deanna was having some difficulty with her voice during these years it's not apparent to me from this recording.
