This was a good jam. It is too bad the Hell's Angels had to break it up. The crowd was a bit unruly as well. When you give a free concert you open it up to not necessarily the best concert patrons. Jack Casady was one of the best bassists of the sixties.
3 people died at Altamont. The 18 year old black gentleman who had a knife and had pulled a gun within 20 feet of the stage was gutted by a member of Hells Angels. 2 others where hits by cars.
3 died at Woodstock 1 overdose of heroin and 2 were hit by farming equipment as they were asleep in a hay field.
This is just a microcosm of what this country would (will?) be like if, God forbid, the Republicans had (have?) their way--they relentlessly attack law enforcement, presumably because they are unionized, slash funding for our police, and want to dismantle law and order. Take a look, everybody--is that what you want? The law of the jungle?
Republicans actually support invade your privacy law enforcement. The Patriot Act rapes your civil liberties. If you threaten what Freedom and our way of life is, which can't be defined, The Feds can listen in. There is no Article or Amendment to the Constitution that provides funding for local police. It defines the 3 branches of government and their powers', when elections are held, and who can wage or declare war.. The Hell's Angles like beating up Hippies when no Cops are available
A triumph of chaos. The organisers were incompetent, the bands naive, the gig should never have been played there. The stage was 39inches high, at the bottom of a hill, with 300,000 people there..............................
hells angels are not the law. They have no authority. If hired by band different issue.Personally speaking, they where dirtbags. We all know their history.
a black goom with a gun comes to shoot someone and the hells angels takes him down like they are supposed to do. hippies are pussies and never fight back and they did not even care that the black goon was going to shoot mick jagger.
Yes, the movement was completely over by 1969, and one could say 1968, when hard stuff moved into the City, etc. However, I would like to see the positive aspects of the movement ,return in a significant way, today. It is possible, as people gradually begin to care for other people again. History repeats itself.
I WAS AT THIS CONCERT --- 12 6 69 --- AND I DONT REMEMBER NUTTIN --- CUZ I WAS SITTING WAY BACK ON THE HILL --- ON THE LSD --- MINDING MY OWN BUSINESS --- SO FUK YOU MARTY FUK-STIK !!!
Was Jagger stoned when he came up with the brilliant idea of not only getting the Angels to do security at his concert, but pay them in beers? WTF was he thinking, or perhaps that's just it, he wasn't thinking at all.
I dig a lot of 60s music but holy shit, what sloppy acid rock.
The 1960s officially ended at this concert. All the idealism went bye-bye, and everything was left in the hands of a bunch of violent douchebags with no self-control.
Years ago, I was jumped from behind by three HA guys, because the$%@& cowards couldn't do it face first. I was also propositioned in a bar by a member of Satan's Choice. He offered me $100 for a blowjob. Incidentally, I am the last thing in being queer, but I am a really nice guy. i know these bastards are bullies; I've seen them run. They are sub-human, and I would like to see a face-off of any of their 'tough' guys against a smaller number of paratroopers.
According to Marty Balin he was trying to help a fan who was being harrased and he was beaten up by the Hells Angles. The Greatful Dead refused to perform the Altamont concert.
Old tough guy Marty Balin thought that a pair of sunglasses and a cowboy hat was going to transform his short little ass into John Wayne!! He jumped off that stage like he was going to do something big and got knocked the fuck right out in about five seconds, baby!!!! The Hells Angels sort of added to the classic dark poetry of this concert!!! Hells Angels, Charles Manson, and the Ohio National Guard put and end to the hippie nation!!!
There's an incredible number of incredibly ignorant comments being made about all sides. The simple truth is that the place, the time and the chemistry were simply bad mojo - the dark underside of human nature that is normally (mostly) contained by "law and order" was released like something out of Pandora's box by an atmosphere of freedom without order, and freedom without responsibility. Altamont was no one's fault, and it was everyone's fault.
What a great idea, let's hire a bunch of anti-social thugs for crowd control and fill them with all the alcohol they can drink so they can police a crowd of hippies that they despise. Brilliant!
I guess you gotta think retrospectively. Could today's candyass security people keep a wild, drugged out and doped up crowd from the late 1960s in check? I dont think so. Big rough and tough bikers would fit the bill.
The hell's angels's were still are nothing but dirtbag scums who still deal in drugs and guns. No wonder there was trouble at this concert. Luckily the days of "hell angels security services is OVER
@flagwaver1969 Yeah, the blacks started all the fightings, vandalism, durgs and everything else that was bad at Altamont..............................suuuuuuuuuuuuuure.
It was an incredibly stupid decision to hire them to do anything, and paying them in beer that they were encourage to drink all day was just lunacy but im surprised about The Grateful Dead because they had used the Hells Angels as security many times prior to this event without any troubles. I think the reason they actually left was because of the general bad atmosphere and violence amongst the crowd, not neccessarily the Hells Angels. But thats just my opinion.
Jerry Garcia, and the Grateful Dead were on the way to Altamont .
when a fella mentioned that the Hells Angels showed up there . Garcia turned around and went home .....He knew what those drunk f **ckers were about, and didn't want any part of it.
@catbird007 while jerry's reasoning is understandable, i read a quote from phil lesh indicating that he now regrets the band's decision not to perform because he thinks that their presence may have had a calming effect on the crowd. i guess we'll never know for sure....
@rocknrollphilip That is a real shame too , because that concert was a pretty good idea and had all the makings of being a kick ass rock festival......"Oh, Well" drunk redneck bikers doing what they do best
would like to hear more of this performance and the stones , if somebody can upload the Rolling Stones and friends cd from altamont , that wold be great to hear !
The Hells Angels were beating people in the crowd for nothing. They were all really drunk and not meshing well with hippies. Also the guy who was killed they had been hasseling him all night because the HA were a bunch of redneck racists and they didn't like seeing a black guy with a white girlfriend. The girlfriend said she brought the gun that wasn't even loaded to scare away racists. That guy was never going to shoot Jagger. He was high and angry at the HA and pulled it out-which wasn't smart
That was a very bad decision to have the HA as security to begin with. They are not the Boy Scouts of America, and if you cross them they will hurt you badly. Next you have everybody pretty much drunk and stoned off their asses, and then the constant fighting in the crowd which disrupts the band playing. Ad the lack of amenities, and you have a powder keg about to explode. Only one person died, considering those factors, that is amazing.
biker gangs suck cock. I live near daytona, there are lots of biker dudes here and they are not the kind of people that should be involved in rock concerts.
@phuckface22 - and what even sadder is that the rebellious, Rolling Stones' have become part of the 'establishment'. I mean, 'SIr' Mick Jagger. Sir Elton John?
@violinsofangels That was Jerry Garcia's idea. Then he ran away and refused to play. The Stones get blamed too much when they didn't know anything about the american Hell's Angels. They were very different from the UK one and the Stones camp were going by Garcia's advice.
@violinsofangels the rolling stones hired the hell's angels in England for one of their concerts without incident. Culturally, the American group was clearly more violent. Hiring the HA will always be thought of as a bad idea.
There was plenty of weed and acid going around at monterey but look how civil that concert was. This was the work of meth, alcohol, coke, heroin etc. the devils pharmacy.
PEOPLE!! the person that the hells angels stabbed HAD a gun and WAS going to shoot jagger!! they had to do what they had to hand!! if you dont believe me look it up on youtube and they show you everything including still shots from video of the person (in a green suit) and the gun and the angel stabbing him!
This is what happens when you let methed up, drunken ice-heads do security. And you wonder why the military passes that crap out to the boys in battle. This has nothing to do with pot.
Its clear that most of these guys are not very smart. "let me tell you whats happening you is hapening." I used to hang out with a pegan some times when I was in my teens {80's} He crashed his bike and slid down the street on his back.
@Cyonide9 You are the only asshole on this page bud The H A are and always will be the only M C club that has changed with the times ! I was at altamont about 15 feet from the incident when the idiot with a gun banished it wanting to kill Mick Jagger if that would have happened we as a public would never enjoyed the classics that the Stones went on to make ! The H A was and is still taking on bad P R from most idiots like you RIP uncle JIMMY (The Cat) SOUZA S. F. Chapter
There's a host of reasons why that gig went tits up. It's too easy to just say the Hell's Angels were to blame. That guy who eventually pulled a gun when the Stones were playing had it coming. You pull a gun on heavies, at a gig for chrissake, you're going down. That's the deal. Where the gig was at totally sucked. The whole stage set-up sucked too. How egotistical were the Stones in all this too, letting the Angels play Texas Rangers at a mass rally, it was way over their moronic heads.
@jakeenan - I think the problem was that the Rolling Stones miscalculated the difference between the USA Hell's Angels and the UK Hell's Angels. The USA folks are a totally different ball-game. The UK Hell's Angels are not linked into criminality as deeply, or as murderously organised as the USA ones. I don't think 'Sir' Mick Jagger realised this until it was way too late. So, yes, Jake - it was due to the Stones' stupidity.
man i cant beleive that nobody take charge of those hells angels when they were living , i would have hide in the bush and shoot everybody that pass whith a hells badge..make an ambush and set them all on fire, you wants some helll , there it is fuckers

maybe it´s due to the people stupidity, hah?
duckby 11 months ago
@phuckface22 - and what even sadder is that the rebellious, Rolling Stones' have become part of the 'establishment'. I mean, 'SIr' Mick Jagger. Sir Elton John?

violinsofangels 1 year ago
@violinsofangels That was Jerry Garcia's idea. Then he ran away and refused to play. The Stones get blamed too much when they didn't know anything about the american Hell's Angels. They were very different from the UK one and the Stones camp were going by Garcia's advice.
Tigerlily21 1 year ago
how do u hire hells angels for security against hippies? Makes no fucking sense.
violinsofangels 1 year ago
@violinsofangels the rolling stones hired the hell's angels in England for one of their concerts without incident. Culturally, the American group was clearly more violent. Hiring the HA will always be thought of as a bad idea.

There was plenty of weed and acid going around at monterey but look how civil that concert was. This was the work of meth, alcohol, coke, heroin etc. the devils pharmacy.

F. Chapter

That event certainly killed the 1960's era of peace and love. What a grim finality to end on.... :(

@IntellectualAmy Don't forget Charles Manson and his followers had a hand in killing that off too.
jpx08 1 year ago
@jpx08 - I agree with you on that one, very true.
IntellectualAmy 1 year ago
There's a host of reasons why that gig went tits up. It's too easy to just say the Hell's Angels were to blame. That guy who eventually pulled a gun when the Stones were playing had it coming. You pull a gun on heavies, at a gig for chrissake, you're going down. That's the deal. Where the gig was at totally sucked. The whole stage set-up sucked too. How egotistical were the Stones in all this too, letting the Angels play Texas Rangers at a mass rally, it was way over their moronic heads.
jakeenan 1 year ago
@jakeenan - I think the problem was that the Rolling Stones miscalculated the difference between the USA Hell's Angels and the UK Hell's Angels. The USA folks are a totally different ball-game. The UK Hell's Angels are not linked into criminality as deeply, or as murderously organised as the USA ones. I don't think 'Sir' Mick Jagger realised this until it was way too late. So, yes, Jake - it was due to the Stones' stupidity.
