I knew it was made by an asian person. The grammar was so bad it couldn't possibly be otherwise. No wonder all employers find that Actuaries have no communication skills.
i actually like actuarial science, the problem is accountants are taking my jobs, why should i bother putting time into something challenging when i can do accounting, have decreased challenge, and the same if not better opportunities? THE SYSTEM IS BROKE
@Lampheader you are contradicting yourself my man. you said you liked actuarial science but yet you don't like challenges? :) if studying and being smarter than everyone else is a waste of time...then this field is not for you. indeed you should be an accountant, it's safer, cuz it seems that you are looking for a job not for self accomplishment :))
@declined80 I dont like challenges that have no benefit. The job was supposed to be the fucking benefit, but you don't even have that as an actuary. All you have is a harder accreditation, worse employer impression (all actuaries are apparently socially handicapped), and less free time to show for. You don't have reputation, money, employer recognition, level of ease on your side as an actuary..it's just a good career, and a really shitty study option.
@Lampheader: weird cuz all the actuaries I've met were cool as hell, and I mean sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll, not some pencil-neck geeks cracking nerdy jokes behind their computers :)))
However, I'm not here to prove anything, do whatever you think is best for you...
@declined80 I agree, but unfortunately that's not what employers say time and time again, I'm still going for my ASA because I've already invested time and money into it and I might as well just finish it now, but I'm telling you that I feel absolutely no accomplishment or specialness, it's harder than all business streams other than quant, and being an accountant, even finance streams to a degree are easier and leave you much more options than Act Sci. The field doesn't suck, the system sucks.
I've found that studying is subject to diminishing marginal returns. You can only cut sleep so much before it actually starts hurting your performance on exams.
The SOA and CAS have released statistics about the average time required to pass all the exams and it is TEN YEARS. Good luck wasting your twenties (the best time of your life) after these exams.
Thanks! Good luck wasting your twenties, thirties, forties,...to you too. :) Just because we might spend 10 years to pass all of the exams doesn't mean we spend 10 years SOLELY studying for exams.
@gazelle1991 for some reason kids think that investing in yourself is the equivalent of wasting your life. in the end we all do what we like, some people like playing chess, others watch tv, play computer games, read books or solve sudoku ... I just like doing math and for some reason I can mix it with finance... Im not sacrificing myself or anything, I just do what makes me happy..lol.
@lukegranger89 so basically, actuarial science is like statistics. i'm planning to be one in the future since i'm really good at like math that doesn't need trigs or graphing.
@Fireprince777 No trig as such... but definitely need to know graphing. Stats is only a small part of the whole education process, need to study a lot of finance too
@lukegranger89 so is there a vairety of jobs in the actuary system? like is there jobs where people just solve the math and others do the math and do the decision making?
@Fireprince777 generally the qualified actuaries (Fellows) don't really do any math... they give actuarial advice to companies (that they are employed by directly or companies that they do consulting for). Fellows usually get analysts to do all the calculations for them. Analysts are usually students aspiring to become fellows. Although fellows don't really do much math they usually have incredible experience and judgement and usually know roughly how the numbers will turn out beforehand!
@lukegranger89 ok. um, one more question, about those tests. when someone passes them, does it mean that the actuary is certified to do those certain questions or is it something else?
@Fireprince777 not really, at the lower level they're there as more of a discriminator.. stuff thats not really practical in the real world that separates those who have the technical ability and those who don't. For the advanced exams then yes you can only practice in the area that your specialised in as an actuary (determined by which exams u have sat at the later level)
@Fireprince777 all the best. be sure to study hard, get good grades, get exemptions from professional exams, and get work experience while your at uni to save a lot of hassle later on!
is actuary sciences that hard? i knew there were countless exams and they had to be hard but i didnt know that you can fail and that its hard to get an internship. aww i really wanted to persue it, but after watching this no way am i gonna do it. damn
Great! Now I can use this to explain everything to my parents.....well, liuyuhongsh, now that you are done simultaneously making fun of our plight and hitler, BACK TO STUDYING FOR YOU!!!!...lol
Seriously, it's not that hard to get the VEE credits + passing SOA's exam and partying is not impossible. I encourage everyone that is tempted by actuarial science to give it a try. We learn good stuff and great theorems !
It has helped feel a lot better...I am studying Survival models right now!
