Wow, this sure takes me back to my teenage years. Johnny Rodriquez was one talented and handsome man. I still enjoy his music all these years later. Great music never greats old. =-)
@1mscoyote - The song was actually written by Tom T. Hall's brother Hillman Hall. It was Johnny's first release on his first album and subsequently, his first number one record. Johnny came to Nashville after Tom T. Hall saw him performing at a tourist attraction in Texas and asked him if he'd like to be in his band. At first Johnny said no, but a year later after his father passed away, he took Tom T. up on his offer and went to Nashville with only $34 in his pocket. And the rest is history...
I love JR, and I love this song (along with "Down on the Rio Grande"). Brings back great memories of my parents two-stepping while I watched the band. Thank you for posting, feels like home :)
big deal if Johnny R was high on coke singing this song! Johnny Rodriguez is STILL the BEST Country/Western singer around.......and YES, BETTER THAN GEORGE STRAIT which rumours were swarming about GEORGE high on coke at one time as well......AS I SAID ~ RUMOURS ~ NOT STRAIGHT FACTS AND NO PROOF ON EITHER PARTY AT That time.

I don't know if anyone sees this, but sometimes when Johnny smiles, I see a little bit of George Strait in the mouth. Not that they look like each other, just something there that looks a little the same. Anyway, love them both.
Before Ricky Martin, Before Enrique Iglesias, Before Julio Iglesias, Before Freddie Finder there was a young Texan who could go from English to Spanish and back to English with ease, who stole ladies hearts with his looks and easy voice and got this old Texas cowboy plenty of dances back in the day. Before the rest there was Johnny Rodriguez.
Saw him last night at the Trio Club in Mingus Tx. Let me tell you, he may play hard but he Still Has It. He did a lot of his own but also others like Gene Watsons "This Time YOu Gave Me a Mountain" and I thought I was going to loose it. J Rod Rules....
I bought his new CD titled " Some of Mine Some of Theirs "
If you get a chance to see Johnny, don't miss it.....
@RJiminez51 .... REALLY did you have to go there with that comment....goodness can't we as grown ups leave well enough alone - please...let's just enjoy the good times - not think of the bad ")....
He's more animated than usual here, but still his greatness is his composing ability and the feeling in his singing. On stage not much there.I've been buying his music since 1975 and loved his music!
Been a fan since he started. they don't sing country this way anymore. The heart, the soul, the feelings he put into all his music. I could listen to some of his songs all day.
I may be 40 yrs old but my daddy is the bestest guitar player in the world (not being biased or anything")...) he's the handsome grayed haired man wearing the black shirt & shades... that would be Ray Casper & I'm a very proud daughter...& ditto y'all...I still love Johnnys music...
@txbabybls I remember when we did that show. I was playing piano. Ray was a great guy. That's Dee Murray (formerly with Elton John) playing bass and Hank Singer is the fiddler on the right.
I love Johnny's music. This song is quite a classic and he sings it so well. His unique voice and style are terrific. Others have recorded this song but, to me, it's Johnny's signature song. Thanks a million for posting this winner. - Paula (PaulinaRena)
