aah just finished high school what a rear 1979 minimum wage was 2.65 per hour if u were 18 under 18 2.35 per hr gas was .60 per gallon had a 71 malibu
John Stewart is a vastly underrated song writer. This song evokes great memories of the summer of '79. My summer job was in a steel mill and after I'd get off at midnight I'd drive home with my windows down (no A/C) and this song would invariably be playing. 32 years ago. Makes me feel ancient.
Dig up some of his other music, you'll be impressed.
andriakilgore, that is so interesting that you think that.
For the longest time when I hear this song, I would think of James Dean, Roy Orbinson, and Jonny Cash holding his rifle in the backseat singing this song traveling down the backroads in a black 57' Chevy.
I think of wood stoves, burnt oil, leather jackets, and a fast black car.
Great video, and even greater song. Listening to this song makes me want to get in my car with my Les Paul riding shotgun and haul a**, with John Stewart cranked up all the way.
Some explain to me why I only heard this song a few times in the late 70's and early 80's but never again? How come such great songs never get played?
@iwggwt I'm guessing that it just sounds too 70's. to bad they captured that moment so well. As a DJ i can understand because what would a radio station play next? unless their going to bring back Cat Stevens,, Dr.Hook..and Micheal Martin Murphy. Although I agree with you. This should not be a forgotten song.
Stewart and Nicks team up to make one of the greats of 1980. Late 70's and early 80's music still sounds remarkably good today and will never be rivaled again.
No, only Lindsey Buckingham playing the Electric guitar. He and Stevie contributed their wonderful talents on the majority of the tracks from the album Bombs Away Dream Babies.
love the video, but the part where jim bass has got rythym in his hands while he's tapping on the cans, (in my opinion), he should be leaning back against the car he's filling with gas and tapping on the old quart oil cans like they used to keep at the pumps. would just add a little more nostalgia.
Had commented on another "Gold" video, which evidently is gone . . . California coastal town (central coast region), sun just starting to go down, the classic old 1960s car with vent windows on the front doors, goin' to the juke joint, etc., etc. -- just some sample images to conjure up in the ol' mind when hearing this. Didn't know he died; am sorry to hear! Thanks much!

I grew up listening to what were then "the Oldies" and found that John was also in the group The Kingston Trio back in the day. He was very good and I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was 11 or so...

It was the summer of 79. I was 12, and stuck in summer school (again) ... but GOLD was on the radio and life was good!
