  • aah just finished high school what a rear 1979 minimum wage was 2.65 per hour if u were 18 under 18 2.35 per hr gas was .60 per gallon had a 71 malibu

  • John Stewart is a vastly underrated song writer. This song evokes great memories of the summer of '79. My summer job was in a steel mill and after I'd get off at midnight I'd drive home with my windows down (no A/C) and this song would invariably be playing. 32 years ago. Makes me feel ancient.

Dig up some of his other music, you'll be impressed.

  • It was the summer of 79. I was 12, and stuck in summer school (again) ... but GOLD was on the radio and life was good!

  • Great video for a great song. The girl at 1:43 is HOT! even if she is only a computer drawing.

  • had a K-tel album with this song in it

  • the 70s was # 1 song in 1979 ever herd

  • (iwggwt) ...freakin' politics.

  • Stevie Nicks was doing songs with everybody back then, what a great voice!

  • great song still one of my favorites

  • Outstanding

  • TURN THE MUSIC INTO GOLD!!YEAH BABY!!

  • nice job going w/ this song great work bud

  • awsome video awsome song and i own a 76 t/a play this song all the time

  • John Stewart, one of the all time greats, RIP.

  • Reminds me of the Summer of 79, t-shirts, jeans, sneakers, chicks in short shorts

  • just makes me think of the california 70's and my personal 70's. god, i was young in the perfect time.

  • nice job on the vid. and the audio is great....thanks!

  • andriakilgore, that is so interesting that you think that.

For the longest time when I hear this song, I would think of James Dean, Roy Orbinson, and Jonny Cash holding his rifle in the backseat singing this song traveling down the backroads in a black 57' Chevy.

I think of wood stoves, burnt oil, leather jackets, and a fast black car.

No color...only black and white scenes.

  • Great video, and even greater song. Listening to this song makes me want to get in my car with my Les Paul riding shotgun and haul a**, with John Stewart cranked up all the way.

  • I'm so glad I found this song. I haven't heard it in years but it's been in my head forever!!!

  • If you think that's Stevie Nicks

(Fleetwood Mac) doing backpu, It is.

  • Some explain to me why I only heard this song a few times in the late 70's and early 80's but never again? How come such great songs never get played?

  • @iwggwt I'm guessing that it just sounds too 70's. to bad they captured that moment so well. As a DJ i can understand because what would a radio station play next? unless their going to bring back Cat Stevens,, Dr.Hook..and Micheal Martin Murphy. Although I agree with you. This should not be a forgotten song.

  • @iwggwt Because POPULARITY is NOT PROFITS to DUMB BUNNY NETWORK!

  • Stewart and Nicks team up to make one of the greats of 1980. Late 70's and early 80's music still sounds remarkably good today and will never be rivaled again.

  • cooles lied!!

  • Clever video to a very good song (which by the way Stewart never cared for)

  • I've always loved this song. It's just so energizing and makes ya want to go out! The video, is really cute.

  • this is a friggin good song! shame they dont make music like this these days :(

  • Not only is this video is very edited, it's witty, it's clever, but it's...It's brilliant!

  • Not to mention the great contribution of Lindsey Buckingham as well!!

  • Was all of Fleetwood Mac backing up John on this one

  • No, only Lindsey Buckingham playing the Electric guitar. He and Stevie contributed their wonderful talents on the majority of the tracks from the album Bombs Away Dream Babies.

Other artists on this song are

    Bass; Brian Garofalo

    Keyboards; Joey Carbone

    Drums; Michael Botts

    Additional Vocals; Mary Torrey.

Hope this info is some help to you,

  • Not all Fleetwood Mac. Just Stevie.

  • Yes,that is Stevie Nicks on backup.

  • stevie nicks on backup?

  • EPIC.

  • Hey pmccluer, you rock. Thank you.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!! THANKS UTUBE!

  • love the video, but the part where jim bass has got rythym in his hands while he's tapping on the cans, (in my opinion), he should be leaning back against the car he's filling with gas and tapping on the old quart oil cans like they used to keep at the pumps. would just add a little more nostalgia.

  • We struggled at work for an hour to remember this song. We're better for it!

  • Love Stevie Nicks' parts.

  • Ahhhh!! Nut'n but nice indeed!! Remember'n simpler times!! Thx for the post cluer!!....Bren

  • JOHN WAS A GREAT SONG WRITER111111111111111 and he could sing!!!!!!!! just ask stevie!!!!!great song john!!!!!!!!! thank you

  • Had commented on another "Gold" video, which evidently is gone . . . California coastal town (central coast region), sun just starting to go down, the classic old 1960s car with vent windows on the front doors, goin' to the juke joint, etc., etc. -- just some sample images to conjure up in the ol' mind when hearing this. Didn't know he died; am sorry to hear! Thanks much!

  • I was watching the Grammy's and John Stewart's name came up as a musician who passed away recently. I didn't know! I loved this song from the 70's, especially since Steve Nicks was singing background. But I also liked John Stewart's voice. God bless you, John.

  • I grew up listening to what were then "the Oldies" and found that John was also in the group The Kingston Trio back in the day. He was very good and I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was 11 or so...

  • His beautiful voice will be forever young..

  • A good, underrated singer, sorry he's gone.

  • Lonesome picker poet guitar master you will'

be missed. But never forgotten. We love you John. Thank you for being the music.
