There was a Ford Matra in the Grand Prix of Monaco in 1968...I got to see it (and hear it) for a couple of days...There's no other sound like it in the world...If memory serves me, the unique sound was due in part to the 180 degree exhast pipe pairing...The others had 90 degree pairing...
I had to laugh at the "at last I've found it" comment.
I've been looking for the sound for ages too. This clip doesn't do it justice. When Chris Amon drove it in full race trim then it was more like a mosquito. All my internal organs started vibrating - honestly. I recently read a comment somewhere from a bloke who said it cracked one of his fillings. It was unbelieveable and I've never heard a sound lke it since.
At last i've found....a haunting memory of a 11 year old boy, British GP Silverstone 1971 with a certaim Mr Amon driving...................................
