@damniel Thank you. I like Trick better bc they are a tad heavier and I can get more volume. I also think they are built slightly better. Axis are lighter no question.
mistake at 2:00 ! he hits the tom at the left of the hats when meaning to only hit the crash! that kit need adjusted dude, no ones playing is that unconventional!
@richyboy1234567 Lol, good eye. And I adjusted this kit a lot. It fit my playing better than any setup I've ever tried and I've pretty much tried them all.
NORMAL setups don't fit my playing at all, that's why I started experimenting.
I think it's almost completely logical. Would like 3 toms on each side but 2 and 3 work. Plus it's way comfy, that's the reason I started building it that way. Thanks a lot for the comment!
@sreddy117 He used to. The last couple of tours he had his to the left like normal. Bill Bruford used to do the center HH but not sure if he still does.
@sreddy117 It is. The only bad part is getting used to the feel of the cable hat. It's a tad sluggish and mushy but not too hard to get used to. Easier than say chain drive to direct drive bass pedals.
you're snare is almost identical sounding to his in this song... sounds good man and I love you're weird setup, left handed setup with a right handed player and a centered hihat... I notice you never really use you're far right toms or you're left big floor, maybe move the big floor close to you're right so you use it more?
I don't use many toms at all in the RATM tunes since Brad had a 4 piece. I use the 18" on the left as a mouse pad for this song lol. On other tunes I use all of the toms though.
Dude at 4:00 you really let loose! You need a band man if you don't have one. Anyways, I thought your video was good, lots of interesting aspects. First off, I like how good your cymbals looks, and I think they are all Sabian except for the one china to the right - which I have by the way. Also, his set up isn't weird guys, its actually a more ergonomically correct setup. Only advice I could give would be to add a bigger ride for that fat sound and you'll be set. 22+ inches should be fine.
hehe yeah I played like that all night long when I was in a cover band. We did Bulls on Parade and Show me how to Live. I would play harder than that all the way through all the rockin tunes we did but can't do the same with the one take vids. I always screw up something. That's why with both RATM vids I wait till the end to let it fly.
And thanks for noticing that my setup is ergonomic. People here think it's weird but people that play it love it because it just makes sense.
Well perhaps not the Toms, that of course also depends on the player. By and large though, the hi-hat being in the middle feels the best, and allows the player to not cross the hands but still lead with the right hand. Johndoe1027 what kind of remote hi-hat stand are you using? Does the feel seem less linear than a traditional stand?
It's a DW 9000 and yes it feels different than a straight HH stand. I got used to it but it's VERY easy to go back to a straight stand. Less linear is a pretty good way to describe it. Softer foot feel. I'd like a better version of whoever's staggered stand. More stagger lol.
I started in the center and placed the voices I use most. Then I moved out from there. I also tweaked the setup so that fills required no cross sticking which was fun. 2 splashes then 3 crashes or descending toms without cross sticking is cool. With this setup I couldn't do some of the traditional fills though. It's a trade off. I still rock the straight up 4 pc with two crashes a lot.
Hey one more question, what type of equipment / techniques are you using to level the sounds of the drums and the line in? I have an acoustic kit and Roland V-drums so I think the v-drums will make it a lot easier to record, but still have a different sound and feel. Thanks John.
The v drums will be a lot easier to record if you don't have a lot of mics and xlr ins. On this vid I recorded to cubase, mixed the drums and and mp3 there. Bounced that and synced it to the video in windows movie maker. Since then I've switched back to mac so the new vids will be mixed in Logic and synced in soundtrack pro (?). Haven't even started messing with video on the mac yet.
Thanks for noticing. Yeah, I used like 30% of my kit on the RATM tunes. Now live I use most or all of the kit since I'm using a 4 pc with 2 crashes a ride and that's it.
cant beat paiste sig hh, such a clean, crisp sound - also not to take anything away from what you're doing, you could obviously play this song in your sleep, but i thought i'd comment that the technique in this song is pretty straightforward, it doesn't really take an amazing drummer, it just sounds impressive to novices that don't have have the basics really down. Again tho, not trying to hint at any sort of criticism of your ability, you're far more experienced and talented than me.
You're absolutely right, the notes of this song are not that hard to play. To emulate Wilk is a task in itself though. I'm in no way good at it but I tried. His timing, dynamics and style are all different than most drummers. It's like being able to play the notes of "When the Levee Breaks". That's not enough to sound like you're playing the song.
Too true, Wilk is a master in his own style. When it comes to pure skill tho, like virtuoso and such, I find it hard to beat Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater/Liquid Tension, but I'm biased because as a matter of taste I'm more into his style than, say, what you hear from Peart or Lombardo. Man, if I could work a double bass with the speed and precision of Portnoy or Lombardo....
I'd have to say that my favorite virtuoso right now is Bobby Jarzombek. I've been rediscovering a lot of greats recently too like Gadd and Colaiuta. There's too many. Way way too many.
Might be a real n00bs comment, but how is your hi hat working when its in the middle of the kit? I mean I can see you opening it but I cant work out how. Really nice playing as well... rare to find someone on youtube who looks genuinely into the music/his own play without being a chronic show off.
I'm working on this song for my school's battle of the bands next year. I've only been playing for a couple months but I'm handling it pretty nicely, only tough part to me is the chorus.
I'll post video of my cover when I'm done, be sure to check it out and give me some critique.
what kind f heads do you use and how do you tune that bass drum cause i also have a tama superstar custom and i cant get that sound out of the basss drum
At this time I was using clear emporers over clear hydraulics on the toms and a superkick two on the BD. The BD reso is the factory Tama batter (with the muffle ring) spray painted black with a 6 or 7" hole in the center. BD batter tuned loose, BD reso tuned tight so it doesn't ring.
