  • I think your English is very good and your accent is lovely :)

  • Lol at 1:52

  • configure: error: FreeType development files not found. Fonts will not be built.

Use the --without-freetype option if you really want this. What is this? Gracias

  • How to run Starcraft 2 on Linux .It same question ,how find live in universal :D :))

  • This is for the beta :( can you make an up to date one?

  • when I run the script on playonlinux it says "unable to find version: Sc2beta" and it won't run the script. advice?

  • @deadalnix what linux distro are you using?

  • @krye97 I did answer that mainy times. The video has been made on ubuntu karmic, but I'm mainly using debian. SC will work on both with playonlinux, and many others.

  • Thanks SO MUCH. I'm new to linux and its great users like you that keep me wanting to learn more and not fall back on the crutches of microsoft. now to just get netflix working with ubuntu 11.04 and ill be 100% satisfied. but ill be damned if its not fun making things work by sourcing instead of collapsing to someone else's potentially dangerous software.

  • What Linux Distro are you using???

    I use Linux Mint 10 :D

  • @jaymitra95 This video was made on ubuntu, but I'm currently playing on debian the same way. This was also tested on mandriva and some others. Anyway, Starcraft II is now integrated into playonlinux, so the manipulation is way more simple.

  • @deadalnix : I knw what PlayOnLinux is. It is a very helpful program

What graphics card are you using because I am thinking of getting a new one but cannot decide between the Geforce 9500 or Geforce 9800 or the GTX series ????

    what do you reccomend??

and thanks for replying to my comment

  • @jaymitra95 @jaymitra95 9500 is probably not powerfull enough to run starcraft II in good conditions. 9800 is enough to run with really good quality. The difference in the requirement between higher graphics and lower are not that big. I have a 9600 and this run fine even if it could be better with a slighly more powerfull video card (low frame rate in intensive action).

  • @deadalnix : Ok thanks

but I have another question. If I buy the 9800 will it last for some years so I can play newer games ?? or should I just get GTX or GT series Nvidia card??

  • @jaymitra95 No clue. You'd better look at hardware specialists websites than listen what I have to say on the subject.

  • @deadalnix : What graphics card do you use for this game???

What do you suggest because I am getting a new one

  • @deadalnix

I'm struggling with playonlinux because i follow the instructions it says to enter in terminal and playonlinux simply returns "file not found" and the starcraft 2 installation stops

  • @TheMelnTeam I suggest to use the installer from blizzard download website. Then you have to provide the installer path in firsts steps of install within PoL. Good luck, this in not that hard. It's actually way easier than when I made this tutorial.

  • @deadalnix

Thanks for the reply! I did eventually figure it out. I was doing the unmounting/mounting improperly as it took me a while to realize what was what in the new distro (for example cdrom = dev/sr0) and how to apply that. Once I figured that out and got the right graphics drivers in the game ran. It's slower than in windows...although I think that's a mandatory concession. Playing with the graphics it can still look pretty good with acceptable FPS.

  • @TheMelnTeam Yes SC2 is slower on linux than window, even if the difference is acceptable (at least to me). But this is not always the case : WoW or Quake III run faster on linux with wine than windows. SC2 use recent functionnalities of DirectX so the support isn't perfect, but it can only get better over time.

  • You're French aren't you? ^^

  • @Ograws Yes :D Even after several years abraod, my accent still sucks badly ^^

  • @deadalnix Iol

  • @deadalnix it doesn't suck, it's just different, but so are accents from USA, UK and Australia, most important thing is that it can be understood. :)

  • Hey! I saw you had Spotify in PlayOnLinux, you know they have a Linux client right?

    spotify. com/se/download/previews/

    Cheers

  • @k1piee They hadn't when I made the video.

  • you sound like that like fish from american dad

  • @lololololol English isn't my main language. You should already be happy that I made the effort to speak your own language and not mine. Anyway, I plan to watch american dad soon, so I'll discover what you are taling about.

  • @deadalnix he is so right :))) and be sure that what he said is not offending,is quite actually very funny(in a very good way) :D

  • @SeeDVicious Ok, good to know :D

  • @deadalnix I'm glad you made this video. You may have a thick accent but your grammar and vocabulary is superb.

  • @deadalnix American Dad is a garbage show, just saying!

  • @PhusionDev Who ask you anyway?

  • @lololololol More like the french guy in the matrix

  • @lololololol

Hehe did not think about it until i say your comment XD

    klaus is cool

  • @lololololol Could not stop laughing! He sounds JUST like Klaus! lol

  • oh my god.. its clouse from american dad!

  • No suitable flex found... how can i find it?? pleaseee! :(

  • thanks

  • I get this error message:

    checking for flex... no

configure: error: no suitable flex found. Please install the 'flex' package.

    Help.... I can't stand win7 anymore...

    Thanks

  • @famillefesty Forgot to say, I am on Ubuntu 10.10 64b

    Thannks

  • @famillefesty You can simply install flex from repository. But now, PlayOnLinux include everything to run starcraft II out of the box. So don't loose your time and use that directly.

  • "you'll have to install gcc-multilib to be able to compile 32bits software." what do you mean? i am new to linux

  • can you play it online on linux?

  • @Buhoman2 Yes, the game is working just fine.

  • ./wineInstaller fails on Debian Testing :(

  • thank you uploader, great vid!! Also thanks for everyone with a constructive comment it certainly helped me out along the way

  • If anyone is having issues with Freetype 32bit Libraries (libs) using the wineInstaller on a 64 bit system. For Ubuntu 10.04 I used "sudo apt-get build-dep wine" and it resolved everything.

  • what distro r u using for the installer?

  • complete and full game of SC II /Lnkgt. C0M/4Ep

  • I have a few questions please . Is this legal (does Blizzard consider this cracking or unauthorized modifying or something similar) ? Does the game work without bugs ? Is it possible to play online , or does the server see this instalation as a third party program , like a version modified for cheating for example? If the answer to the above questions is "yes" , I am totally joining linux. Thank you very much.

  • @ingenticul The game in itself isn't modified. wine is an implementation of windows libraries and system calls for linux. It's making a bridge between both systems. This is legal as long as you have a legal copy of starcraft II .

The game is working fine, including inline play. Performances are a bit lower than on a windows system, but still very good.

The game isn't modifies neither its behaviour. So this isn't considered and detected as third party software.

  • if you cant speak english, then do subtitles.

  • @atif7865 You can't seem to understand English, as he speaks it in this video.

  • hmm. is this working with the retail copy? p.s. your english is fine.

  • Omg dude i can listen u forever :D

  • I would like to know what computer are you using, or maybe the ram and the graphics card that you used

  • Sorry, I'm having trouble following your directions. First, should we have PlayOnLinux *already* installed? Or is the wine installation that is part of 'wineInstaller' supposed to take care of that. I ran that script successfully, but I don't think PlayOnLinux has been installed on my system. Also, sc2betaPol fails because (I think) $PLAYONLINUX has not been defined. Also, ~/.PlayOnLinux/WineVersions/Sc2beta/lib/sources does not exist - should it? Thanks very much for your work on this!!

  • I'm trying to install the full game from the DVD, it's not working for me, I tried straight up from wine, to the script that comes with POL but its giving me permission bs :'(

  • It runs like John Goodman.

  • Thanks a lot. I have installed the full starcraft2 version it work grate but there is no sound at all.

  • Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately it didn't work for me :-/

Note: command 'wine /home/qute/.winetrickscache/vcrun2008-ms09-035/vcredist_x86.exe' returned status 66. Aborting.

    Any ideas?

BTW. I changed the wine compiling script by adding:

    --without-freetype

  • Thanks a lot.

  • yess le cameltoe, merci pour la vid

  • Does this overwrite my wine installation I already have?

  • @Exdozolie No this doesn't override wine installation in the system. Just build a specific version of wine that palyonLinux will use to run starcraft. This will be used only by PlayOnLinux and will not mess up your system.

  • Thanks deadalnix, I appreciate the time you took to help out with this!

  • is compiling supposed to take forever?

  • @RANDOMACTS124 Compiling wine takes some time, since it is a very big application, but it also depends on the speed of your processor.

  • I all. For thoses who are on a 64 bits distro, you'll have to install gcc-multilib to be able to compile 32bits software.

  • Thank you! that was my problem exactly

  • @Voreniius Hi,

I really don't know what is wrong here. If you make any progress, please let me know so I can improve the script ;)

  • @Voreniius I have the same problem. However, randomly, sometimes it does start up correctly.

When it fails to start, I right click (in PlayOnLinux GUI) on the SC2 launcher and select "Close this application". I then open up a terminal and type "killall SC2.exe". I then click on the "Configure this application", and then select "Simulate Windows reboot"

Sometimes the next time I launch SC2, it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Very frustrating...

  • @conzar Hi guys.

I have looked at the video @conzar made about the issue. Unhopefully, I do not have the issue on my own computer and I have no clue form where it came from.

However, Please let me know if you have any information about this, so I could improve the script if a solution is found. Even if you only have partial info, please share it, we are stronger all together ;)

  • Thanks for the replay @deadalnix ! I have found that using ALSA fixes the launching problem; however, there are issues with the game when using alsa like the sound might stop working in the middle of a game. Also, I think from wineHQ, some people have wrote that alsa might perform worse then OSS.

  • German

  • Right after it tells you where to install it to (C:\Program Files\sc2beta) it loads for a second, then it just goes to the ubuntu login screen and asks for my username and password. I don't know why. I login, then it just comes back on with all my programs and windows off. Any ideas? ty

  • @myothernamesbill Hi,

I'm aware of this issue. However, this is not a issue from my script, it come from bad interraction between nvidia drivers and X.

If you are on ubuntu/debian, you can solve this by adding the repository nvidia-vdpau . I'm pretty sure this also exist on others distribution but I cannot help you too much.

  • Hey I followed all of your steps and the installer is not launching. Im pretty sure that I have all of the files in the correct folders, everything workt up to the point where starcraft installer should launch... any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

  • I got it so i can the sc 2 beta in POL and on my desktop but its not launching?

  • @watev4 Are you sure you have installed everithing in the right folder ?

  • @deadalnix sorry its the installer that's not launching Does the installer have to be in a specific folder?

  • @watev4 Actually, the script is asking you where did you put the installer. So if you give him the right location, it should work.

Are you sure that wine is compiled properly ? Did you get any error messages during the compilation pahse ?

Can you please tell me what appen when you use this command : ls ~/.PlayOnLinux/WineVersions/Sc2beta/usr/bin/ ?

  • Script are updated !

  • What distro you are running

  • @shadowpl3 I run ubuntu lucid (however, this video was made with ubuntu karmic).

This work also on Arch linux. Should work on any modern distro, But i'm unable to test them all ;)

  • @deadalnix

May I ask you what dock / applets you are using ? :)

  • what linux ditro you are running?

  • @shadowpl3 Hi, I'm currently running an ubuntu karmic in 64 bits.

But this script should work in many other distros.

  • Salut Jai besoin dairde..

Merci

  • I updated the script todday. I got performance improvement with this new version.

  • Nice to see sc2 works on linux! What kind of hardware you have? Is it playable when you play? No lag?

  • @Murpheus43 I have a c2d 3GHz and a geforce 9600 with 4 Gb of RAM.

This is working properly. Peformances are good even with hish wuality graphics. However, I have some minor graphical bugs with high quality graphics (some shaders seems to not work properly). If I lower the graphic quality, I have no bugs anymore.

If you do not plan to use the higher qualities graphics, this just run perfectly.
