I also came here to compare because my 83 Mustang GT Convertible is getting all new exhaust from engine back. I was merely trying to help people understand that basing a purchase off of this comparison is a bad idea and neither mufflers were represented correctly. I think glasspacks are a bit loud and obnoxious. Flowmasters are famous because they chambered their mufflers in a way to get deep throaty growl without being too loud. I don't likem, every dumbass on the road has them.
Not as noticeable with a glasspack but totally is with straight pipe. Yeah, the guys at the track are running straight headers...but they also don't drive on the street. They are squeezing every little bit of HP out of it for racing, which requires a good high rpm engine anyway. Sound good doesn't always mean is good. With that Mach 1, depending if it was a 351, 390, 428 or 429, I'd install both. Most guys find the best sound/performance using glasspack as a resonator and mufflers..
well the exact same 2 mufflers installed slightly different will sound totally different. X pipes, H pipes, length of tailpipe, location of muffler and its distance from the engine, how big the pipe is, all of it matters. Personally I think its a bad idea in general. Sure you open up flow but backpressure is required for good low end torque. Your gonna sound mean but be a dog off the line, the less back pressure the further your power range moves into the high rpms, therefore sluggish takeoff.
This comparison is completely useless. You changed the position of the camera between the 2 exhausts. Placement varies the sound so much, it has to stay the same for a comparison to really show the difference. Without a decent microphone your not going to get a real good representation of either in any position. The fact the camera is directly behind the car during the flowmaster test is going to make it sound more alive. Coming from an angle will always result in a muffled sound.
@avsrule247 If we were talking scientific we'd need a hell of a lot more than a decent microphone. I'm talking just for a decent comparison the least a person could do is use the same microphone position. Otherwise why even bother? If I'm comparing guitar amps it would be ludicrous to have one cab mic'd correctly and the other just off to the side. Not trying to be a dick, just saying the video should not be used as a basis to buy either muffler, the flowmaster sounds better because of the angle
@magickninja369 I actually thought the glasspipe was better, but I guess I have more experience with cars then a lot of people so I can determine what it would sound like in real life.
@avsrule247 ok...so lets say you did. The same idea works both ways. Your gonna buy that glasspack and it's NOT going to sound like this. Its going to be much higher pitched and raspier than this video portrays. More experience with cars would give you a pretty good idea what both sound like already...therefore why would the video matter in the first place?
@magickninja369 Because I wanted to hear the sound, and based on my car experience and common sense I could judge how much different it would sound in real life. Seeing as I only have stock mufflers on my 73 Mach 1 atm, I can get a good idea of which muffler would be better for me from this video.
I have a 2005 dodge ram 1500 with the little 4.7L v8 running gibson shorty headers, no cats, duel 28" glass packs, 2 1/2" stainless steel pipe to the rear. It is LOAD. But only upped my rear wheel horsepower by 11 and 19 footpounds. putting my truck at 296hp at 5700rpm/299lbs at 4100rpm.
Why would you burn out the inside of a glasspack? That's freakin retarded. You pay for the fiberglass on the inside so it gives it a nice sound. If you burn it out you just paid $40 for a painted piece of pipe. You might ass well just do a muffler delete. And no muffler will give a 8hp gain. That's all in your head. Besides who puts an exhaust on a v6 mustang, I would be embarrassed to do that
the ? of the matter is wich one gives u more power flow masters sound awesome but im sure if u dual glasspacks itd be just as loud if not louder get a glass pack dump gas in the inside light it on fire let it burn out then in stall it makes it even louder did it to an 84 v6 camaro sounded beautiful ppl thought I had a v8 nope!! now i got a 98 stang v6 not to much done yet but gonna roll with a dynomax welded muffler sounds really awesome an gains around 8 hp just the muffler swap
Glasspacks are the way to go, cheap and have one of the nicest sounds, flowmaster is a little to raspy in my opinion, whereas the glasspacks is a deeper sexier more muscly sound
is that a 28 inch glasspack?? i measured under my camaro to see if it would stick out too much and it looks like the 28 inch + the tail pipe is gonna stick wayy over to the left.
I have glasspack on mine and my friend has either magnaflow or flowmaster and everyone I talk to says that the glasspacks sound alot better. That's good bc there alot cheaper too!
@mambobro actually i got an 87 with headers to 2 1/2 DUALS. REAL DUALS. By dynomax. There fuckin sick as fuck and they go down the stock exhuast patteren. I'm the only person i know that has trual duals on my firebird. your petty one muffler is despicable. SO ALL YOU FIREBIRD OWNERS THERE IS DUALS. You dont have to waste your time on this.... UnSatisfactible. Fake duals.
Theres no way to decide which is better... It's not dual Glasspacks like the flowmasters, and the video's sound was horrible! The video sound of the flowmasters was very good...
Most of you who said "Flow-masters!" are too simple to notice it wasn't a fair comparison. He had ONE glasspack versus TWO Flow-masters. Dummies. A couple of you noticed.
Glass packs sound good on anything cept hondas and anything with 4 cylanders. Flowmasters are just over used out here where I live they are loud but when they idol its kinda annoying to listen to them.
@jimmykudo23 It maybe jap but they sound allright on the Older Z cars pre 1990s. I seen a few with flowmasters and it sounded allright but they mostly get MSA parts only. But thats also beacuse they got a nice sized Longblock inline 6 similar to the fords and Benz motors. I know glasspacks wont work so well with a L-6 with a lower RPM for sound. But thats why they got powertaps which give it more of a nice growl.
I personally would go with glass packs the cherry-bomb glass pack ($45) verses a whole flow-master muffler or system ($250 to $600) and in one case I've seen $1300 ouch! , hmmmmm which one won't break the bank.
i heard them glasspacks on a 445 t/a and damn near shit my pants. my buddy had flows on his 88 gta and 3 inche headers. thing was a monster. im stuck with the decision too. but i heard glasspacks are cheap as hell.
1 glasspack vs 2 flowmasters, that is unfair. i bet ya wasted ya money on them flowmasters. if ya had 2 glasspacks. vs 2 flowmasters not single vs dual. it be fair and glasspacks would win. even though the single glasspack sounded better than the dual flowmasters
they both sound good but yeah idt its a fair comparison with one beeing dual ! i like the poping sound of glass packs but ive heard uve gotta switch them out after a few years cause they get burnt out and sound like one of those rice burner cars.
Glasspack..... always glasspack!!! Flowmaster is just the shitty mufflers pushed on people by big chain stores...... check out the stats they are very free flowing. Now having said that I am right now using flowmasters but only becaus I just bought my 76 scottsdale and the exhast from header gaskets to chrome tail tips were only 9 days old and I am cheap!!! ha ha
I gotta agree not a fair comparison dual flowmasters vs single glasspack!!!! And if you check the stats flowmastes are not much better than stock! Now having said all that my newly bought 76 scottsdale has flowmasters and..... well I kind of like them and seeing how they are the old lady wants me to put the next few grand on the bird I guess I'll keep em.
Hey man~! nice firebird.I just got a Trans am for my 16th bday (DREAM CAR FOR 7 YEARS!) anyways, the dumbass that had the car before took off the stock exhaust system. And he welded together 4 different exhausts and welded a glasspack to the end. ANd fucked with the whole car.So now im bringing it back to dual exhaust=] Long Live the Pheonix!
i wanted a super loud muffler so i told the guy i wanted the loudest glasspack that i can get and he gave me a muffler that looks like a glasspack but its not strait through i looked up on google and found one like what i have and it says its just a high performance muffler it has 2 baffles, anyone know what it is or how loud it is?
There's something nice about both of them; based just on this I'd pick the flowmasters but I would like to hear the glasspack in dual (or better still quad!)
@mcspeed2000 how is it unfair you wanna design a dual outlet glass pack? let me know how that goes for you. if thats how you wannt do it then figure a way to true dual it and put 2 glass packs vs 2 flowmaster 40s 2 chamber or how bout super 44's? why not magnaflow? if u wanna do it cheap xlerator muffler is basically a cheap flowmaster with a thinner casing and half the price even though flowmaster stole their design!
@mcspeed2000 Flowmaster makes a muffler for the camaro/firebird that is shaped diffrently then any other flowmaster for the odd exhaust design used for the camaro. To do the same with a Glass pack would take more work then its worth without going true duels which you dont have to do if you use the flowmaster.
@mcspeed2000 - unless he changed it to true headers is still one tube back to the muffler.. the only difference is that the flowmaster has two outlets vs the stock one outlet. The Flowmaster is better since the flow restriction is greatly reduces and the baffles are much better places.
Glasspacks are only good if you got 20 bucks in your pocket and you need to legalize your exhaust. Believe me, I've been down that road several times....
