One example of the richness of her tone is her live performance of 'There's music in you' in 1998 on Rosie O'Donells show. And that was past her prime. Last but not least, when its comes to LIVE performance, its not even debateable who was superior.

Even though she sound great, she never sang "correctly", which is why she sounds so awful now. She always sang from the chest or throat, never from her diaphragm as she should, which is why shes has that characteristic "jaw wiggle" during vibrato. Vocal coaches always site Whitney as an example of what NOT to do when singing. The human singing voice - when cared for properly - should only strengthen with age. Opera singers have known this for centuries, which is why they have such long careers

And how many over impose their larynx yugghh. Its all about co-ordination of the folds.

I am perfectly aware that one does not literally "sing" from the diaphragm, but that the primary force should, ultimately, come from there. Whitney does not do this, as these clips show. She is forcing from the head (i.e. the throat, nose, etc., hence the wiggling jaw). I have encountered many noted vocal coaches in my career who site Whitney & Mariah as the last thing one should do when one sings.
@mrlopez2681 The irony is that these vocal coaches and people who sing "properly" never wind up being as famous, revolutionary, or talented as the people who sing "improperly". Ironically, Vladimir Horowitz was regarded as the greatest pianist of all time, and he played completely "improperly". Most of the "noted vocal coaches" are not very good at singing themselves and never achieve the fame of the people they critique.

As for diversity, it has little to do with tone, more to do with how authentically you interpret a piece, which depends on musicality and/or interpretive skill.
I've never seen mariah switch it up like Whitney in one night.... But to me it has always seemed that Mariah always had to oversing, whereas Whitney knew when to sing softly and when to belt. Mariah just belts all the time. I was a Mariah fan long before I was a Whitney fan, and I like them both, but their voices and music styles are just very different.

@hello07601 Disagree with you on that. Mariah has insane control over some aspects of her voice thats true but not all. And there are some things missing from Mariah - like her overdrive. Its gone missing it seems... She rules over control of volume and her soft neutral is out of this world yes. But her straight belting leaves me unsatisfied coupled with no overdrive which just makes no sense. On this video what whitney does at 1.19 to 1.26 is flawless overdrive and sounds awesome.

Mariah was never comfortable using it - which is i guess more of a personal choice rather than anything else. But still neutral, belting, curbing, overdrive you have to be able to do it all and do it well. You can't just cut overdrive from the vocal modes you will use, its classic aretha, chaka etc

@Chasenip I can assure you Mariah does more than whistle. Furthermore, Mariah's mother was an acclaimed opera singer in her younger years. That's where Mariah was exposed to vocal training and discovered her range. When it comes to Mariah singing opera, I do not know for certain if there are recorded videos or not, but I can assure you she knows arias from Madame Butterfly, Riggaletto, Carmen etc...her mother used these to teach her technique. Try Tokyo Dome 95' and witness the true VOICE.

i saw her live back in the day on the I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY tour. riverbend amphitheater in cincy, OH. huge storm and then it broke and they opened up the stage and she came out and sang her heart out. never heard anything like it...except in church. she has a gift and talent and no matter what will always be the VOICE. never seen mariah sing live...even on TV. lol.

One example of the richness of her tone is her live performance of 'There's music in you' in 1998 on Rosie O'Donells show. And that was past her prime. Last but not least, when its comes to LIVE performance, its not even debateable who was superior.

Even though she sound great, she never sang "correctly", which is why she sounds so awful now. She always sang from the chest or throat, never from her diaphragm as she should, which is why shes has that characteristic "jaw wiggle" during vibrato. Vocal coaches always site Whitney as an example of what NOT to do when singing. The human singing voice - when cared for properly - should only strengthen with age. Opera singers have known this for centuries, which is why they have such long careers

And how many over impose their larynx yugghh. Its all about co-ordination of the folds.

@quiet1234 - I have seen several classical singers who can "mix", as you state, wonderfully. I am perfectly aware that one does not literally "sing" from the diaphragm, but that the primary force should, ultimately, come from there. Whitney does not do this, as these clips show. She is forcing from the head (i.e. the throat, nose, etc., hence the wiggling jaw). I have encountered many noted vocal coaches in my career who site Whitney & Mariah as the last thing one should do when one sings.

Ironically, Vladimir Horowitz was regarded as the greatest pianist of all time, and he played completely "improperly". Most of the "noted vocal coaches" are not very good at singing themselves and never achieve the fame of the people they critique.

Whitney overral is the better Belter... from A4-F5 Whitney rules.... F#5 they tie.... Mariah slightly takes over from F#5ish to G#5 but neither of them rule in this domain.......both of them do the bulk of their belting in the A4-Eb5 range anways.....

@hello07601 Interpretation and musicianship are the two halves of singing, so you can't say "Whitney is the better interpreter, but Mariah is the better singer and musician". You could say,"Mariah is the better singer because she's the better musician".
As for diversity, it has little to do with tone, more to do with how authentically you interpret a piece, which depends on musicality and/or interpretive skill.

What are you rambling on about now? Mariah does not take anything over Whitney in that range, neither of them sing in that area too frequently enough to trump the other. F#5 IMO is the last note where throughout eaches career they sung often. G5-A5 is close, you could make a solid case for Mariah outclasses mariah and I would consider that( maybe even agree).... but even if that is true.. Mariah does not outshine Whitney in that region enough, unlike Whitney between A4-E5

I do admit that Mariah tone is slightly more uniqure and her style of singing/ample use of melissma but she always sounds the same( not really a bad thing though, plus Im mainly using prime mariah daydream era).........
all in all, its very hard for me to take seriously PRIME mariah, she barely performed... I think on like 10 wordl tour performances in her first 7 years...

Mariah's biggest flaw since her debut was her inability to connect fully to the song, musically she's impeccable but lacks the emotive and shear passion than that of Whitney. @hello07601 I disagree. I have always felt that Whitney actually had more control. Mariah has a strong voice, there is no denying that. But to me it has always seemed that Mariah always had to oversing, whereas Whitney knew when to sing softly and when to belt. Mariah just belts all the time. I was a Mariah fan long before I was a Whitney fan, and I like them both, but their voices and music styles are just very different.

@hello07601 Disagree with you on that. Mariah has insane control over some aspects of her voice thats true but not all. And there are some things missing from Mariah - like her overdrive. Its gone missing it seems... She rules over control of volume and her soft neutral is out of this world yes. But her straight belting leaves me unsatisfied coupled with no overdrive which just makes no sense. On this video what whitney does at 1.19 to 1.26 is flawless overdrive and sounds awesome.

@hello07601 Those couple of notes in One Moment in Time that everyone always posts - overdrive. Mariah was never comfortable using it - which is i guess more of a personal choice rather than anything else. But still neutral, belting, curbing, overdrive you have to be able to do it all and do it well. You can't just cut overdrive from the vocal modes you will use, its classic aretha, chaka etc

@quiet1234 - I'm not here to have a childish dispute over "who is better than who", but there are many classical singers who have "moved the world", they just don't make pop records or music videos (save perhaps Anna Netrebko). I never stated that she didn't sound great. Her performance, interpretation, etc. is certainly wonderful, but the facts are there - the woman ruined her voice by not singing correctly, period.

@Chasenip I can assure you Mariah does more than whistle. Furthermore, Mariah's mother was an acclaimed opera singer in her younger years. That's where Mariah was exposed to vocal training and discovered her range. When it comes to Mariah singing opera, I do not know for certain if there are recorded videos or not, but I can assure you she knows arias from Madame Butterfly, Riggaletto, Carmen etc...her mother used these to teach her technique. Try Tokyo Dome 95' and witness the true VOICE.

She has better dynamics and better rhythmic sense along with better musical sense which allows her to create more interesting and complex melismas. Mariah can sustain high belts phrasing while shes up there for long periods of time. She can transistion through every single one of her register from the top to the bottom of her range in one go. She controls every inch of her range

Without whistle register mariahs range is Eb2-E6 which is 4 octaves. Whitneys is A2-C#6. Just because whitney is louder is some areas of her voice doesnt make her better she can not do what mariah does. Mariahs has a more agile head voice a more unique beautiful tone and is more resonant in her upper belt and lower reg

And no she didnt surpass mariah vocally at all. Mariah has more range, a stronger more flexible agile lower register. A more comfortable flexible mid range. A more resonant agile upper belt. A more agile versatile head voice. And then her whistle register. Mariah has better sense of rhythm and she has more musicallity and can create more complex musical melismas.
