  • First time viewer. Wow! Could you consider NUMBERING your videos so we can find the sequence in order. I sure learned a LOT, but I think I am not finding the whole series. Thanks a million!

  • @momheinan ... Numbering wouldn't really work because I remove old ones all the time. I did start putting a month and year on em though. They are available on DVDs on the web site......Donald

  • can you please doa video on how you keep the grass out ya garden

  • @bighomie229 ...I'll put it on the list.......Donald

  • I hope Lucy gave you a good explaination for that stray "tater toy"!! :-)

  • right on you did it perfectly i just went to lowes and bought onion sets. i like that machine you use to replant 'em man. anthony clinard

  • @dejavuwrx ...that transplanter is a little easier on the back. Good luck with your onions.....Donald

  • What is the purpose of cutting the tops out of the transplants? The row you did from seed, did you cut the tops out of those at any point. Thanks for all the videos, alot can be learned from you. Best wishes.

  • @bamaduckhunter ...I found that cutting the tops off the transplants gets them going a little sooner. No, the ones I didn't transplant we allow to grow naturally......Donald

  • Hi Donald - Your show is like a cup a coffee in the morning or a smooth bourbon by the early evening moonlight, mixed in with the sensibility of advanced university learnin' . I mean that. A question professor: in order for me to get my onions to the bulb stage, I now have to dig them up [they are fully grown] clip them and replant them, making sure to bury only the roots? Is that correct?

  • @buffalopatriot ... I plant my seeds in the fall and let em grow through the winter. Around February or March I'll dig up the plants and transplant (spacing them out 6-8 inches apart) if the weather allows of course. This year it's been raining a lot and I can't get in the garden to till and row up for the transplants. If it does dry up I'll dig em up and plant the bulb part about 1 inch deep. Glad you enjoy the videos.......The Professor LOL

  • when do you start seeds and how long does it take befor u can transplant? ty

  • @bobinmissouri ... I start my onion seeds in the fall and transplant sometime in February or very early March depending on the weather.......Donald

  • Just love how your dogs watch your back=)

  • @MRTHATSFAKEANDGAY ... they are never more than a few steps away........Donald

  • Hey Donald! Even way up here in Canada, I've used some of your advice and had a great garden. Can't wait until next year. (No such thing as a winter garden with three feet of snow on the ground!)

Thanks so much, and keep those videos coming!

  • @winnipeguy75 ... it would be hard to have a garden under 3 ft of snow. lol Glad you could use some of the ideas in your garden. Good luck this spring.......Donald

  • Donald what do you do with all that extra food like 750 pd of onions?

Great Job Love your videos !

  • @StatenIslandSlim ... we put up all the family could use then I gave the rest away.........Donald

  • Outstanding information. I can't believe I missed this video....LOL

What kind of tool is that you're using to transplant the roots?

  • @potboy321 ... it's a Hatfield Transplanter that you can order from Johnny's Select Seeds.........Donald

  • My husband & I just wanted to say that we've really enjoyed your videos. I'm going to try canning greens this year thanks to you. Keep them coming!

    ~From NW LA.

  • @bassmaster19941 ... Hey NW LA, glad you enjoy the videos. Check out the forum on the web site, lots of good gardeners on there from all over.......Donald

  • thanks Donald good video i came out with around 200lbs of onions this year in about 120 ft of row

  • @flatheadcat4u ... that's a real good harvest. Onions take a long time to mature and some folks just harvest too soon. Got to let em grow........Donald

  • Hi, I dont know what is the name of the Red/black tool you used to make it easier for you to plant the onions in, But I saw how they(farmers) used it in an Korean Entertainment show called Invincible Youth, They actually insert the plant into the tool when the handles are spread apart, then poke on the ground and then close the handles in and pull off the ground, This method might make it easier. It might help you.

  • @carollil ... I'll give that a try next time I use it. Thanks......Donald

  • Do you have a video on how to pick a good used tractor. I have ELEVEN 70 yard x 40 yard plots of land...all attached ...to plant stuff in. Sorry about the measurements, my dad was a strength coach. ty

  • @skullgymequipment ... sorry no video. My advice would be to stick with a brand name tractor such as John Deere, Ford, Case/IH, Kubota, etc. to make sure parts are available. Something as simple as an oil / air filter can be hard to find for some of these off brand or gray market tractors...... Donald

  • whats that planter called? im sure youve seen those old corn planters at smome swap meet, i cant find any newly mape ones.i whant to eventualy be self suficient.

  • @fishtankbank ... it's the Hatfield Transplanter........ Donald

  • Thanks Donald,I,ll look into it,sounds like something I cud build,U jogged my memory, now that U mention it,I plum forget! Pete

  • Great video Donald,I hope Kabota donated your tractor,or they should at least give you some sponsorship.I have a 1968 J.D.110 garden tractor that I restored with hydraulic lift, can you tell me if they make a row hibber application for one, thanks Pete.

  • @DesertDigger1 ... they make something you may want to look into, it's call a "Row Builder". They have a single blade on each side and work pretty well. Easy to pull and not very heavy......... Donald

  • Do you ever sell anything you grow or does your family and you eat all of this seems like alot of onions im just wondering.

  • @traptfan777 ... we put up what we need then I sell the rest to help pay expenses.......... Donald

  • Wow i wish i grew up on a farm, a friend of mine lives on a farm and he absolutly loves it.

  • @OdinsMace ... wouldn't trade it for anything......... Donald

  • Well there's just one thing that you didn't mention, what the heck do you do with all those onions?

Onions are my favorite vegetable, and since I'm the primary cook, everyone eats onions.

One of my son's, when he was about 10 y/o told me he didn't really care for onions. I said "Oh, I really do feel sorry for you, I'll chop em up smaller, hows that." I got away with that for quite a while.

Anyway I just found your videos looking for canning videos.

  • Well I used some, froze a lot and actually gave a pickup truck load away.......... Donald

  • I love all your onion videos! I'm planning on growing a lot next year- love onions.

  • The variety I plant is "Candy". A very large onion that taste great......... Donald

  • Hey another great video, what a great setup you got there:) the soil looks really good.

I see you got the same 4 legged helpers as me hmmm.

    rob

  • Hey Rob ... They love picking and eating tomatoes. Like the potatoes too........ Donald

  • well sir i just thought i would stop in and say howdy,i love your video's been learning a lot about gardening ,thanks again and God bless

  • Glad you enjoy em...... Donald

  • That is such awesome soil. Your dogs are beautiful. Do you compost the greens?

  • Lots of stuff from the garden goes into the compost pile....... Donald

  • were do u get that red tool> Chance

  • Do a search online for the "Hatfield Transplanter"....... Donald

  • kinda expensive? Chance

  • sand and old sawdust works well with onions

  • These get pretty nice. Check out the video on "harvesting onions"...... Donald

  • Have the dogs EVER been caught in any of the machinery and suffered major injuries?

  • Never...... Donald

  • That's a couple of really happy dogs.

  • They do have a good life....... Donald

  • You make this look so damn Easy ...

  • That's because it is easy...... Donald

  • You are a superstar.... :) my hero

  • Ah, you making me turn all red. Glad you enjoy...... Donald

  • Donald,

Great video as usual. Just curious what the temps are there right now? I am tempted to try and start some onions outside here in Atlanta. We have potential Frost up until April, but this year seems to be alot warmer lately. Daytime highs are in the mid fifties and lows about 37-44.

  • We are running in the 50s-70s during the day and 30s-40s at night. Mine have been growing all through the winter...... Donald

  • Thanks again for another Video.

I'll be seeding indoors soon, and tranplanting after the ground thaws. Us great white Norther Minnesota/Wisconsin growers are jealous of your weather this time of year. Yes, we are eager to get out and play in the dirt.

  • It won't be too long...... Donald

  • Another great video!

Keep 'em coming, Im still learning! LOL!!!!

  • You are ready "grasshopper" just plant those seeds and let em grow. LOL...... Donald

  • Great Job as usual. As so many of the others have said already, we wish we could be out in the garden. Soon enough thou..now if I could just get a bigger space to garden

Keep up the great work, enjoy ALL the videos and the pups too!

  • I was lucky the weather cooperated and allowed me to prepare the seed beds so well. It is usually a struggle at this time of the year with all the rain. We got over 2 inches yesterday and last night...... Donald

  • I get so jealous watching your videos. Lord help me. I know that's not right but I can't help it. :)

  • Youre not jealous just eager to get out there and play in the dirt...... Donald

  • Ok, you're right. We are still frozen solid here and I'm going stir-crazy.

  • Maybe you should try a few plants in containers inside the house. A window facing the south should give you all the sunlight you need...... Donald

  • 750 lbs... thats a lot of onions. i hope you get some good cash from the ones you sell. don't say this is your last onion video i love your videos! make all you want i'll watch um.

  • People who tried them last year have been putting in orders since the fall. I've made 6 vids on the onions in the last few months and thought folks would be getting tired of em. There are a couple of things I guess I should show you a little later on...... Donald

  • do you sell any veggies or keep them all?

  • I sell what we don't use to help pay garden expenses. Check out the web site (at the bottom of the home page) and I have it broken down. Not selling much right now but it will pick up around May and June...... Donald

  • love the videos. keep em comin

  • Thanks

  • Poor Lucy, she gets all the heat!

    Thanks for the lesson Donald!

  • The teeth marks gave her away.

  • I agree about not making your rows too soon in advance. I make mine right when I'm ready tp plant the seed. I make the row and then plant the seed real quick. Keeps the soil from drying out. But then again my rows are only 8 feet long. Yours are from horizon to horizon! WOW! 750# of onlions?? I can't even fathom that amount. holy cow.

And those dogs are having one heck of a great time. lol

  • I don't think I said it in the video, but if you hear me say, "trust me on that" it means I've made that mistake in the past. And you can trust me on that. LOL Imagine the potato row at 300 ft. long getting 5-6 potatoes per foot which would be a below average harvest. How much you think that will come out to? Lucy will go nuts over all those potatoes...... Donald

  • Those dogs have a GOOD life. :) Looking forward to the updates...I'm growing some onions too, for the first time. I have about 160+ plants and I figure SOME of them have to make it. Still loving your videos!

  • If I had to guess all 160 of your onions will make it. You can throw an onion bulb on top the ground and go back a couple of weeks later and it will be growing. Stand it up, throw a little dirt around it and youll have an onion in about 3 months...... Donald

  • why do you need to transplant the onions? i love your channel.. im still learning about gardening. everytime i watch one of your videos i just wish all of this snow would melt..lol i live in northern idaho..

  • When I planted the seed they were planted real close together so I could get the most bang for the space. It would be extremely difficult to space out each seed and expect each one to come up. In a future update I'll show you what happens when you try thinning onions.

Well look at this way, living north of me means you know what's coming. If you see something you'd like to plant you'll have plenty time to order...... Donald

  • hello sir,

you can make as many onion videos as you want, kewl by me...

i have that same little trailer, i pull it with my riding mower.

man chere, thems a lot o' onions.

  • I actually have two, the other is a little bigger. When my son moved back to Lafayette he gave me the smaller one. When I load them up with tools I look like a junk dealer...... Donald

  • It must be nice to live where the weather allows you to garden this time if year. I live in Cleveland and we're still a good 2.5 months away from frost free gardening, but thanks to cold frames and hoop houses i have started my first round of cabbage and lettuce seedlings today . Greats vids keep it up.

  • Where there's a will there's a way...... Donald

  • Love it. Keep them coming. Great garden and I love your helpers.

  • Thanks...... Donald

  • I have been wondering for a few months since watching your channel, do you have a veggie stand where you sell some of you sutff? Store enough for yourself and gift out alot? Big family?

I am waiting for the snow to go yet.

    Dean

  • My goal is to plant enough for our use and the rest is sold to help pay some of the expenses of growing the garden. When I have extras I simply roll a sign out at the end of the driveway and folks stop and buy fresh vegetables right out the garden...... Donald

  • What a great video. Ive made a group called 'The Tao of Gardening' at Journik, com. I will be posting a few techniques that Ive found. Ive tried to germinate my onions but they haven't sprouted yet neither have my peppers.

  • Give them time they'll come up...... Donald

  • I feel like an expecting mother, lol.

  • I like your onion videos! No need to stop =D

  • I did about a half dozen of em since starting the seeds. After all that planting I am getting tired, need a rest. LOL ...... Donald

  • You've got a knack for making videos Donald.

  • I just click record and hope for the best...... Donald

  • Those were some nice transplants you had.

  • They were nice, about 2-3 times larger than the ones I had been buying online. Started growing again as soon as I transplanted them...... Donald
