First time viewer. Wow! Could you consider NUMBERING your videos so we can find the sequence in order. I sure learned a LOT, but I think I am not finding the whole series. Thanks a million!
@momheinan ... Numbering wouldn't really work because I remove old ones all the time. I did start putting a month and year on em though. They are available on DVDs on the web site......Donald
What is the purpose of cutting the tops out of the transplants? The row you did from seed, did you cut the tops out of those at any point. Thanks for all the videos, alot can be learned from you. Best wishes.
@bamaduckhunter ...I found that cutting the tops off the transplants gets them going a little sooner. No, the ones I didn't transplant we allow to grow naturally......Donald
Hi Donald - Your show is like a cup a coffee in the morning or a smooth bourbon by the early evening moonlight, mixed in with the sensibility of advanced university learnin' . I mean that. A question professor: in order for me to get my onions to the bulb stage, I now have to dig them up [they are fully grown] clip them and replant them, making sure to bury only the roots? Is that correct?
@buffalopatriot ... I plant my seeds in the fall and let em grow through the winter. Around February or March I'll dig up the plants and transplant (spacing them out 6-8 inches apart) if the weather allows of course. This year it's been raining a lot and I can't get in the garden to till and row up for the transplants. If it does dry up I'll dig em up and plant the bulb part about 1 inch deep. Glad you enjoy the videos.......The Professor LOL
Hey Donald! Even way up here in Canada, I've used some of your advice and had a great garden. Can't wait until next year. (No such thing as a winter garden with three feet of snow on the ground!)
@winnipeguy75 ... it would be hard to have a garden under 3 ft of snow. lol Glad you could use some of the ideas in your garden. Good luck this spring.......Donald
@bassmaster19941 ... Hey NW LA, glad you enjoy the videos. Check out the forum on the web site, lots of good gardeners on there from all over.......Donald
@flatheadcat4u ... that's a real good harvest. Onions take a long time to mature and some folks just harvest too soon. Got to let em grow........Donald
Hi, I dont know what is the name of the Red/black tool you used to make it easier for you to plant the onions in, But I saw how they(farmers) used it in an Korean Entertainment show called Invincible Youth, They actually insert the plant into the tool when the handles are spread apart, then poke on the ground and then close the handles in and pull off the ground, This method might make it easier. It might help you.
Do you have a video on how to pick a good used tractor. I have ELEVEN 70 yard x 40 yard plots of land...all attached ...to plant stuff in. Sorry about the measurements, my dad was a strength coach. ty
@skullgymequipment ... sorry no video. My advice would be to stick with a brand name tractor such as John Deere, Ford, Case/IH, Kubota, etc. to make sure parts are available. Something as simple as an oil / air filter can be hard to find for some of these off brand or gray market tractors...... Donald
whats that planter called? im sure youve seen those old corn planters at smome swap meet, i cant find any newly mape ones.i whant to eventualy be self suficient.
Great video Donald,I hope Kabota donated your tractor,or they should at least give you some sponsorship.I have a 1968 J.D.110 garden tractor that I restored with hydraulic lift, can you tell me if they make a row hibber application for one, thanks Pete.
@DesertDigger1 ... they make something you may want to look into, it's call a "Row Builder". They have a single blade on each side and work pretty well. Easy to pull and not very heavy......... Donald
Well there's just one thing that you didn't mention, what the heck do you do with all those onions?
Onions are my favorite vegetable, and since I'm the primary cook, everyone eats onions.
One of my son's, when he was about 10 y/o told me he didn't really care for onions. I said "Oh, I really do feel sorry for you, I'll chop em up smaller, hows that." I got away with that for quite a while.
Anyway I just found your videos looking for canning videos.
Great video as usual. Just curious what the temps are there right now? I am tempted to try and start some onions outside here in Atlanta. We have potential Frost up until April, but this year seems to be alot warmer lately. Daytime highs are in the mid fifties and lows about 37-44.
I'll be seeding indoors soon, and tranplanting after the ground thaws. Us great white Norther Minnesota/Wisconsin growers are jealous of your weather this time of year. Yes, we are eager to get out and play in the dirt.
Great Job as usual. As so many of the others have said already, we wish we could be out in the garden. Soon enough thou..now if I could just get a bigger space to garden
Keep up the great work, enjoy ALL the videos and the pups too!
I was lucky the weather cooperated and allowed me to prepare the seed beds so well. It is usually a struggle at this time of the year with all the rain. We got over 2 inches yesterday and last night...... Donald
750 lbs... thats a lot of onions. i hope you get some good cash from the ones you sell. don't say this is your last onion video i love your videos! make all you want i'll watch um.
People who tried them last year have been putting in orders since the fall. I've made 6 vids on the onions in the last few months and thought folks would be getting tired of em. There are a couple of things I guess I should show you a little later on...... Donald
I sell what we don't use to help pay garden expenses. Check out the web site (at the bottom of the home page) and I have it broken down. Not selling much right now but it will pick up around May and June...... Donald
I agree about not making your rows too soon in advance. I make mine right when I'm ready tp plant the seed. I make the row and then plant the seed real quick. Keeps the soil from drying out. But then again my rows are only 8 feet long. Yours are from horizon to horizon! WOW! 750# of onlions?? I can't even fathom that amount. holy cow.
And those dogs are having one heck of a great time. lol
I don't think I said it in the video, but if you hear me say, "trust me on that" it means I've made that mistake in the past. And you can trust me on that. LOL Imagine the potato row at 300 ft. long getting 5-6 potatoes per foot which would be a below average harvest. How much you think that will come out to? Lucy will go nuts over all those potatoes...... Donald
Those dogs have a GOOD life. :) Looking forward to the updates...I'm growing some onions too, for the first time. I have about 160+ plants and I figure SOME of them have to make it. Still loving your videos!
If I had to guess all 160 of your onions will make it. You can throw an onion bulb on top the ground and go back a couple of weeks later and it will be growing. Stand it up, throw a little dirt around it and youll have an onion in about 3 months...... Donald
why do you need to transplant the onions? i love your channel.. im still learning about gardening. everytime i watch one of your videos i just wish all of this snow would melt..lol i live in northern idaho..
When I planted the seed they were planted real close together so I could get the most bang for the space. It would be extremely difficult to space out each seed and expect each one to come up. In a future update I'll show you what happens when you try thinning onions.
Well look at this way, living north of me means you know what's coming. If you see something you'd like to plant you'll have plenty time to order...... Donald
I actually have two, the other is a little bigger. When my son moved back to Lafayette he gave me the smaller one. When I load them up with tools I look like a junk dealer...... Donald
It must be nice to live where the weather allows you to garden this time if year. I live in Cleveland and we're still a good 2.5 months away from frost free gardening, but thanks to cold frames and hoop houses i have started my first round of cabbage and lettuce seedlings today . Greats vids keep it up.
