  • This is very sad thing. Two Japanese died. この事故で二人の日本人が亡くなりました。合掌。

  • Fuji speedway was one of the fastest F1 tracks back then. Gotta love the Japanese sport commentators then and now.

  • i know ive seen video footage of this crash somewhere

  • It`s incredible Gilles survived that crash. Guess it`s the way the car landed...and where as well. But how the hell he walked away from it is something else.

Sadly, of course, his luck rang out in Zolder '82. -Daz in Oz

  • Where is Gilles?

  • Gilles drove the red Ferrari and Ronnie drove the six-wheeled Tyrell. As I recall Gilles drove into Ronnie from behind. I remember (Yes, I'm that old!) footage from the accident where it looks as Gilles is flying over Ronnies car!

  • Gilles and Ronnie, two great drivers!!

    RIP

  • Gilles DID race for McLaren but only at Silverstone; Mosport and Mt.Fuji were done with Ferrari.

Actually, Peterson was Gilles' favorite F1 driver as both drove in same fashion.

Not surprised to see top-notch quality footage from Japanese material. All good VHS and BETA machines in early 80s came from there.

  • @RimRiderQC

No wonder, Sony developed BetaMax and JVC developed VHS.

The only rival was Philip's Video2000, which never really took off.

  • great video quality for something that's over 30 years old.

  • Gilles Villeneuve - 1977 - McLaren

  • Ferrari, not McLaren

  • Neither driver was killed or fatally injured. Peterson died as a result of medical complications (blood embolism) from a crash a year later at Monza , Villeneuve died at Belgium in 1982 in qualifying, in an accident similar to this one (taking off the back of the rear of a car and cartwheeling down the track)

  • Ronnie Peterson & Gilles Villeneuve collided. And in the dark black ages of motor racing there were people standing near the track markings.

  • They were actually the track side of the barrier.

  • is he dead??

  • Wheres the rest of the car?

  • I have had the good fortune of being on the "professional" side of the spectator fence (Mid-Ohio), to take some photos. And I am here to tell you, even in the "safe" spots, it can be horrifying. LOL I did get some really great shots though. But going on the racing side of the tire barriers, is just retarded.

  • Wrong. Two "spectators" were killed in this accindent who were standing in the prohibited area in front of the tyre wall. A 25 year old amateur photographer and a 21 year old marshall trying to get the former back into to spectator area (where the engine landed). 10 spectators in the spectator area were also injured. The Japanese police impounded the wreckage for a manslauter investigation. Eventually charges were dropped. Source Gilles Villeneuve by Gerald Donaldson (a very good book).

  • but fortunately they didn't die in this accident...

  • Sadly of course both drivers did die in crashes in future years...

  • yes, You are right - that's sad... both of them...

  • No, not both, only Villeneuve died in crash, Pwterson died cause medical blunder...his accident was very survivable, he broke two legs thats all...

  • Peterson was my absolute hero!! I have his autograph 2wice!!

  • no ronnie peterson was in lots of crashes and in this ut he died in an operation

  • @pzanzerl stop being an idiot

  • @T1carus OK, i'll try to, cheers,......

  • @pzanzerl the people who died were in a section next to the track where they should not have been. It was forbiden to stand there. I think it was photographers, they went there anyway to get better picts. It's not Gilles' fault if they where there.

  • @orzel313 they didnt ..but by coincidence there both died .. ronnie 1 year later and gilles 5..

  • @orzel313 Is that supposed to be funny?

  • Oh god are they seriously dragging the spectators away? Also in the same year Tom Pryce died. sad sad safety in those years

  • sad sad day
