This song exemplifies the true soul of Arabic music: a composer as genius as Zakariya Ahmad creates the palette to which the singer, in this case Umm Kutthum, can choose the colors and add to the painting, creating a mosaique of melodies and vocal enhancements in terms of vibratto, nasality, breaking, that intensify the meaning of the lyrics. Creativity at its best!!! I wish Arabic music had continued to evolve like this. This woman has been the songstress of Arabs since almost a century now.

No, you are NOT a part of the Middle East; you are intruders and occupiers to our land. You are NOT related to this part of the world, and have nothing to do with our Arabic world, culture, history, land, language, or our people. You are cancer and a wart that has infected the body of the Arabic world, which will exterminate you and demise you with time.

Is there any more of Umm's music that has this same emotional intensity combined with musicality? I listened to many other samples of her on YouTube but I couldn't find anything else this powerful. It seems the 40s were her golden years; to my ear, her voice became coarser after that, as if she were shouting. The subtlety of this reminds me of Ali Akbar Kahn's sarod. There's not much in Western music to compare it to, except maybe the end of Janis Joplin's "Ball and Chain" from "Cheap Thrills".
Im Arab, Musician and a Rock Metal Progressive listener and Ican tell You that OM KALTOUM is the Very Greatest Singer of all Times in the Arab World, Her music and Feeling is really Heavy and Extreme.
To lizzie55love: No one forces you to listen or like Om Kulthoum. No one goes around leaving negative comments about Halim whom you love. It is like religions, you cant point your finger at mine and tell me mine is better. In other words, keep it to yourself and enjoy life but do not force your opinion down my throat.
You need to stop going around just to leave negative comments on Om Kolthoums songs. People that love Om Kolthoum, they love her with a very strong passion. It is very insulting to them when others leave negative comments about her.
You are weird. You are so possessed with hating Om Koulthoum to the point where you have posted many negative comments on many of Om Kolthoums songs. Please take binsbais advise as it may help you.
You need to have imagination in order to like Om Kolthoum. I do not see any one who likes OM Koulthoum going around and leaving negative comments about Abdel-Halim as you are doing about Om Kolthoum. Remember, art is a matter of taste.
.lizzie55love....HI U DOIN BRO.....I THINK U SHOULD GIVE YOUR SELF MORE TIME TO LISTEN TO UMKULTHOUM...SHEZ NOT JUST THE FIRST PAYRAMID OF EGYPT OR OF THE ARAB ART AND SONGS...BUT SHEZ A PAYRAMID TO HUMANITY AND LUV....SHE REPRESENTS A CULTURE THAT SHALL FOR EVER.....GOD BLESS U BRO...TAKE CARE OF YOUR SELF...
