You do not need to off screen stuff if you are walking towards the plot...only farming in general.

Since you like this game you should check out Rogue Galaxy. It's a great action rpg, but the voice acting and cutscenes are actually near Final Fantasy worthy. So far the story is interesting too. And you get to be a space pirate which is a plus.
