@JohnnyMindcrime Ditto that, had five tickets but had to work so my only exposure was the report back from brothers and sister. Incredible talent: Ronnie, Sammy, Denny & Bill all superb musicians-the line-up unsurpassed...legendary. R.I.P. Ronnie Montrose, your music will live on through time immortal.
Agreed! Carmassi would rival Bonham and Pert. This guy is amazing. I have seen him many times and plays hard, fast and with a driving force. Impeccable timing. He and Ronnie Montrose are two of the gems of under rated musicians.
The signature guitar riff in the middle of "Rock The Nation" has to rank in the top 4 great guitar riffs of all time. That one and the riffs from "Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin, "Never Before" by Deep Purple and "Badge" by Cream really stand out for me!
Oh man ... I was there - and it was fantastic. They did Bad Motor Scooter, I Got The Fire, Space Station #5 and Rock Candy, in addition to Rock the Nation. Sam and the Wabos had already done a full gig - the show was advertised as the Wabos opening for Montrose ... very cool!
I'm with you bro, I would pay anything to see the original Montrose play their first album... Saw Ronnie Montrose solo concert with Journey & Van Halen back in 78 when VH was the opening band... What A concert!! Kick ass Rock & Roll... Sammy for President!!
I saw them when they were touring to support the first album. It was at Cobo in Detroit. They opened a show for Foghat and Black Oak Arkansas. Ronnie had a Theremin mounted right to his guitar. Awesome show!
What an idiot Sammy is! Just saw him on the Metal Show saying how Ronnie can't get along with singers, but if my lead singer EVER spent half a song signing autographs INSTEAD of singing, I'd kick his ass back in the dressing room. Sammy, when you're on stage, SING. After the show, THEN sign autographs. Always liked Sammy, but this video shows some big flaws.
I would have given my right arm to have been there... we Brits may have had Led Zeppelin but if they and Montrose were playing different venues on the same night, I'd have been there watching Ronnie & Co. Truly awesome band who made one of the greatest hard rock albums of all time.
Lots of ppl dont know that ronnie played with edgar and johnny winter in 1973. Frankenstein went # 1 on the billoard charts in May of that year and was knocked off the top by McCartney and Wings "My Love" The Winter brother's album had Free Ride on it as well. I agree with you shirtgod...one of the best hard rock albums of all time in my book as well!! :))
For years and years before cds the 1st album by Montrose was the loudest recorded album I ever heard..Forget that the music is loud and heavy too.But the recording just jumped off the turntable.I never heard a record that loud.for like decades.I haven't listened to the cd. I wonder if digitally, it can sound as great?
I went to 3 Montrose reunion shows in a row ....that was the first. It was Concord, Marysville and then Reno and I was onstage in Marysville and Reno! Awesome fun!!!
How does this recording made from far away on what I'm sure is a "cheap" video camera sound this good? Has the small and portable video technology leaped this far? Wow, they sound good, too.
There are lots of players who are flashier (and I like them too!) but while I can listen to Holdsworth or Vai, etc. for 10 or 15 minutes, I can listen to Ronnie Montrose for 2 or 3 hours. I had the pleasure of shuttling him around Boston for a day, back around 1990 and he was just a regular, nice guy. No BS, just real nice. Great guy, great player, great music.
don't underestimate how much that first montrose album influenced the future american guitar players. I loved jimmy page, but ronnie had more to say about the sound of the next decade in america
I spent 18 years in the business as a touring sound engineer, for among others Joan Jett and Prince. I didn't earn that status by having a tin ear.The tempo on the original album"Montrose" and the reunion performance are virtually the same.
Took my son Dan to this show for his 16th, was a lucky break to see these 4 guys together. Sammy's a gracious dude, and Ronnie still has chops. Was very cool of them to bring Bill up, as well as Carmassi. Play Cali again guys, you'll pack the House. How bout this... Do a Chickenfoot / Gamma / Montrose tour and take some juniors to school, and earn some new fans. Rock on Grandpa's!!!
Remember when this came out in 1973.Nothing came close. I was 18 and I couldn't make it to Winterland where they were opening for some other acts. All my friends came back talking about them like they had seen God....Damn! Never did see the Hagar version but did see Montrose with Bob James ,which was pretty good but not close to the skull-caving epic the whole first LP was......
@blacksabbathish If you would prefer facts rather than opinion, blacksabbithish, timing the original opening Guitar intro till first note of solo clocks in at 2:06.9,live performance which is note for note identical until Montrose free forms the beginning of the solo clocks in at 2:04.3,so yes, the tempo is faster..by a fraction! When A tempo is "rushed"the singer will struggle to phrase correctly.Hagar is having no problem fitting the lyrics into the tempo.Faster,yes..by app. 2 beats per/min.!
ROCK THE NATION, their standard opening song...I have to agree with shirtgod... the original first MONTROSE album is a classic that is a must for anybody who wants to know what 70's rock was all about. I was fortunate to see Montrose (w/Sammy) at Winterland (SFO) - saw both post-breakup too but them together was the best - ALSO agree wrt Frank Marino (and Mahogany Rush) .. both of these acts were overshadowed by the disco era at that time. Thank you GONZOTV for this video.
Denny Carmassi is one of the best drummers in Rock and Roll. His opening riff in "Rock Candy" is equal to "When The Levee Breaks" as one of the greatest drum riffs of all time. His snare drum should go with him into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He still plays lean and clean - watch him go 32 bars without a fill, just DRIVING the music with only his snare, hat, and kick! And lesser drummers use their entire body to get the strength that Denny effortlessly gets out of his forearms. Nice guy, too.
I got all records made by GAMMA and Ronnie Montrose own band.... Nothing can make me change my mind about one thing: Ronnie Montrose IS number one for ever. Have been listening to his music since 1977 when I was only 15 years old... Can't be tired on his music...
i'm with shirtgod... the first Montrose record is one of my faves from the 70s.... Ted Templeman and Donn Landee recorded an amazing record when it took real chops to make a great record... and Ronnie and his band sure had the chops... Other than his work with Montrose I'm not the biggest Sammy Hagar fan... but I love his singing on the first Montrose record and to me its still his best work.
DC sounds awesome-HE drew the blueprint for heavy metal drumming-totally r/b based, his canvass minded, laser straight power and overall feel is what makes playing the drums a real blast-never fancy and straight in the nuts..it's a beautiful thing.
You said it shirtgod, one of the best ever....produced by the great Ted Templeman. I was 7 years old when I was regularly buying records in 1974...barely tall enough to reach the counter. The salesman asked me my age and who I liked...Zeppelin, Purple, Floyd, Grand Funk, Aerosmith, etc, I read all the liner notes, read Circus, Hit Parader magazines, knew about the bands, but did not see my first concert until 1981 which was Van Halen on the Fair Warning tour. I'll be a fan till I'm dead

I was at this show but just saw the latest Montrose lineup in Livermore at the Bankhead theater. I gotta tell you, it's not the original but still a white hot performance. Played every song off the first album plus Spaceage Sacrifice & I Got The Fire from the 2nd. Tight band and if they come to town, don't miss 'um.
You're dead-on regarding Frank Marino. I remember him at Cal Jam 2 back in the seventies, phenominal. In the early eighties Marino released 'Juggernaut' that actually had a rock radio hit called 'strange dreams', but it was the title track and it's 8 min solo that showed with no doubt that Marino belongs up there with the all-time greats.
I remember seeing Ronnie, Sammy and Montrose so many times in Oakland and all the little clubs near San Jose, Wild music, wild crowds, wild dates wild drugs thanks guys
Very possibly Ronnie lost his hair to chemotherapy for prostate cancer. I think he's fine now. Good grief this is such a great band. Sammy's like a circus ringmaster lol. Always has been always will be. Ronnie plays the heaviest, sexiest, dirtiest guitar, always did and still does.
Yes, lets get back to the basic already Sammy and Ronnie, enough fooling around. You guys are the best. You guys have no idea how we long for one of the greatest guitarist and the best vocalist . Please do concert with you two together, come to the West Coast. Ronnie, I saw you at that Casino in California, you don't belong there, you should have been at the concord or some other place like it.
SH should forget about Chickenfoot and get back with Montrose. His voice actually sounds good with them. I don't care for his voice in anything else he's ever done.
That's actually pretty cool Sammy signing autograph's while he's singing. I don't think I've ever seen any rock stars do that.
We've all heard the song a millions times so I think the spectacle of him signing the items while Montrose rocks is more fun than listening to him sing.
I'd pay just 'bout anything to see the original Montrose lineup play the first album start to finish.........and throw in some "I Got the Fire" and maybe a couple Gamma and Hagar tunes for encores............that'd be sweet. Who's up for that show?????
Bridgebain - I'll definitely share that cost 50:50. Saw Montrose at Wembley supporting Status Quo(!) at time of the first album. Every track is amazing. See you at the Show...
Richrath is great, always loved his tone.Another greatly underrated guitarist is Punky Meadows of Angel. If you weren,t an Angel fan he was overlooked because of their image. But he's amazing.
One of my all-time favorite ensembles. I've only been able to see Ronnie with the original Edgar Winter Group in '76 with Mountain(Leslie West), and in Germany doing solo: "Town Without Pity" (F'in Awsome Rendition), Then Hagar with Van Hagar in '83 with Scorpions and Metalica. Well-spent tickets.
Shirt, yeah I sure do remember Frank Marino.....he was quite good........but Mahogany Rushs' music was a bit progressive for its time and I did'nt think Marino could really let go....but listen to "Queen Bee" from the "Cal Jam" LP from the late '70s........damn ............Marino is brilliant.
My very 1st concert was Sammy opening up for Boston in 1978. Best concert ever for me. I was front row and center. Sammy played guitar with Gary Pihl. Fantastic. Never got to see Montrose though. Geez...... todays music really sucks hard.
You know, I'll give Sammy credit for sounding good, just like he did on "Montrose" ( the first LP)....but you know what? Its still Montrose......Its always gonna be Montrose. Its always gonna be Montrose. Ronnie Montrose & Gary Richrath....the two most UNDERATED guitarists in the '70s and beyond.
Yes it is Bill Church on bass....listen, Sammy introduces everyone....all original Montose members! I take it this is from a Sammy show, probably from the Warfield theatre in San Francisco.....can anyone confirm this?
I saw Sammy 2 years ago at Summer Celebration in Muskegon, Michigan. (WHERE???) He is one of the most gracious people you will ever see. Signs autographs throughout the entire show. Brings people up on stage. Its great to see someone who has been at it for so long and still remembering its the fans that put him there. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Keep on rockin', Red Rocker!!!
I was there too! AWESOME right on the mark music! Guitar was never about double and triple picking it was about feel. Listen to Ronnies vibrato! Sweet!
Dudes---EVERYBODY'S picking hand is faster than their fingering hand. If it isn't, you need more practice. Haven't you heard of double and triple picking? Anyone can hammer and pull and trill notes on the fretboard while occasionally picking just to keep the volume up (ala Tony Iommi). Sounds great most of the time, but you can't do it all the time. However, if you pick too much w/o enough fingering, you end up chicken-pickin'. Listen to Gamma 1-No More Tears. Classic Ronnie. Hardly mushy.
FREAKING AWESOME! ronnies guitar sounds great. saw him with GAMMA at OLD CHICAGO. long gone indoor amusement park in chicago, il.. same place some scenes in the movie " the fury" were filmed. a movie about teleknesis. the scene where the arabs crashed on ride through the beer garden windows was filmed there.
Yes I think I am better in some respects. I don't mean to be so critical. He is an OK player but pretty darn average. I have followed his career. I saw him play with Sammy Hagar in Mobile Alabama back in 1976. It's just that I have gotten out of listening to worn out cliche' rock guitar and his playing is about as predictable as it gets. I am more into players like Allan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambali etc. These guys can play it all and know the guitar inside and out.
Dude, with respect, his playing is not 'cliche' since he was creating the sound in 1976 that was became the 'cliche' sound. That is like saying Wes MOngomery is cliche jazz, or Holdsworth or Fripp are cliche progressive. Show us how your chops compare with the works on Open Fire. Better in some respects? C'mon bud. Easy to say from your keyboard. There is a big difference between what you can play in your garage or living room, and what you play in the studio, or in front of 10,000 people.
Being fair, You have to consider the time and place. Since the 70's there's was a huge jump in how the guitar was looked at, and the technicallity of some of the music. There are alot guys playing now, that if it came down to "cutting heads" with the 70's players, it would be no contest, even guys like myself that have had and will have zero influence on anyone. But "back in the day" these guys were paving the way.
Good clip. I was at one these shows. It was so cool to see Ronnie, Bill Church, and Denny Carmassi playing together. It says something about Sammy, how he's able to maintain his friendships over the years. Maybe its because they still know how to have fun!
cmon you guys look i love sammy hager great singer great performer but i beg you guys too listen to ian gillian sing child in time on the made in japan album sammy hager isnt even close to ever hitting those notes
this sounds incredible. Think about who else was rocking (and singing) when this song was originally released. Robert Plant and Ian Gillan don't have the vocal longevity that Sammy Hagar has....Holy Crap!
I agree Plant dosn,t have the vocal range that Sammy does but Ian Gillan is another story.Plant will turn blue trying to sing the Immigrant song nowadays. Gillan had incredible vocals during his Deep Purple days.I still like Sammy the best though.
Zander is one of Rock's great vocalists...but to say he sounds like he did when he was 24? I don't think so, coolD. But who does, right? Zander and Cheap Trick still rock hella hard.
AWESOME, I've NEVER seen a singer SIGN A BRA onstage before. Great posting. But, what would Dave say...."Sammy throws a party...."shut up, Dave, Sammy's the Shit!!!
RIP, RM! You and the entire Montrose experience with Sam, Bill, and Denny was something to cherish.

I'd rather have Ronnie's and Bill Churches autograph, but sammy is cool. I guess it'd be hard to put down the guitar and sign away. Damn!

I liked Hagar the best when he was in this band,His voice and heavy guitar riffs go very well together

SH should forget about Chickenfoot and get back with Montrose. His voice actually sounds good with them. I don't care for his voice in anything else he's ever done.

this was one of the strongest band from the early days an the best

That's actually pretty cool Sammy signing autograph's while he's singing. I don't think I've ever seen any rock stars do that.
We've all heard the song a millions times so I think the spectacle of him signing the items while Montrose rocks is more fun than listening to him sing.

How about this lineup?
September 11, 1976
Opening band: Angel
Middle act: Spirit
Headliner: Blue Oyster Cult
In front of some 10,000 at Detroit's Cobo Arena.

How about this lineup?

I'd pay just 'bout anything to see the original Montrose lineup play the first album start to finish.........and throw in some "I Got the Fire" and maybe a couple Gamma and Hagar tunes for encores............that'd be sweet. Who's up for that show?????
Bridgebain 2 years ago 22
Bridgebain - I'll definitely share that cost 50:50. Saw Montrose at Wembley supporting Status Quo(!) at time of the first album. Every track is amazing. See you at the Show...

Richrath is great, always loved his tone.Another greatly underrated guitarist is Punky Meadows of Angel. If you weren,t an Angel fan he was overlooked because of their image. But he's amazing.
lrewopf 2 years ago
One of my all-time favorite ensembles. I've only been able to see Ronnie with the original Edgar Winter Group in '76 with Mountain(Leslie West), and in Germany doing solo: "Town Without Pity" (F'in Awsome Rendition), Then Hagar with Van Hagar in '83 with Scorpions and Metalica. Well-spent tickets.
hartistry1957 2 years ago
Shirt, yeah I sure do remember Frank Marino.....he was quite good........but Mahogany Rushs' music was a bit progressive for its time and I did'nt think Marino could really let go....but listen to "Queen Bee" from the "Cal Jam" LP from the late '70s........damn ............Marino is brilliant.

My very 1st concert was Sammy opening up for Boston in 1978. Best concert ever for me. I was front row and center. Sammy played guitar with Gary Pihl. Fantastic. Never got to see Montrose though. Geez...... todays music really sucks hard.
stereoguy63 2 years ago
You know, I'll give Sammy credit for sounding good, just like he did on "Montrose" ( the first LP)....but you know what? Its still Montrose......Its always gonna be Montrose. Its always gonna be Montrose. Ronnie Montrose & Gary Richrath....the two most UNDERATED guitarists in the '70s and beyond.
Kenoman29 2 years ago
Gary Richrath?????

I saw Sammy 2 years ago at Summer Celebration in Muskegon, Michigan. (WHERE???) He is one of the most gracious people you will ever see. Signs autographs throughout the entire show. Brings people up on stage. Its great to see someone who has been at it for so long and still remembering its the fans that put him there. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Keep on rockin', Red Rocker!!!

I was there too! AWESOME right on the mark music! Guitar was never about double and triple picking it was about feel. Listen to Ronnies vibrato! Sweet!
glennstrat 2 years ago
Whoops....wrong song....I meant listen to "Wish I Was".
Stratoblaster01 2 years ago
Dudes---EVERYBODY'S picking hand is faster than their fingering hand. If it isn't, you need more practice. Haven't you heard of double and triple picking? Anyone can hammer and pull and trill notes on the fretboard while occasionally picking just to keep the volume up (ala Tony Iommi). Sounds great most of the time, but you can't do it all the time. However, if you pick too much w/o enough fingering, you end up chicken-pickin'. Listen to Gamma 1-No More Tears. Classic Ronnie. Hardly mushy.
Stratoblaster01 2 years ago
FREAKING AWESOME! ronnies guitar sounds great. saw him with GAMMA at OLD CHICAGO. long gone indoor amusement park in chicago, il.. same place some scenes in the movie " the fury" were filmed. a movie about teleknesis. the scene where the arabs crashed on ride through the beer garden windows was filmed there.

Dude!!!!!! I want hair like sam. Like a semi afro that would be fucking awesome!!!
glencunningtonr 2 years ago
His picking hand is always faster than his fretting hand. That's why his fast runs can sound mushy.
Nice vibrato, though.
swinsty08 2 years ago
BGoldstone are u about 18?
ROFL just a joke...but seriously, Ronnie invented this sound. So he's hardly cliche. Everyone that copied him could be called cliche maybe.
:)
These guys were the pioneers.

Ronnie Montrose sucks as a guitar player..He should tanks God he was able to make a career playing guitar.
BGoldtone 2 years ago
You must be a better guitarist than!!! You obviously haven't heard Ronnie's work!! Listen to the BEST of MONTROSE CD, before you judge this guy!!!!
redhead5150 2 years ago
Yes I think I am better in some respects. I don't mean to be so critical. He is an OK player but pretty darn average. I have followed his career. I saw him play with Sammy Hagar in Mobile Alabama back in 1976. It's just that I have gotten out of listening to worn out cliche' rock guitar and his playing is about as predictable as it gets. I am more into players like Allan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambali etc. These guys can play it all and know the guitar inside and out.
BGoldtone 2 years ago
Dude, with respect, his playing is not 'cliche' since he was creating the sound in 1976 that was became the 'cliche' sound. That is like saying Wes MOngomery is cliche jazz, or Holdsworth or Fripp are cliche progressive. Show us how your chops compare with the works on Open Fire. Better in some respects? C'mon bud. Easy to say from your keyboard. There is a big difference between what you can play in your garage or living room, and what you play in the studio, or in front of 10,000 people.
trinzeon 2 years ago
Being fair, You have to consider the time and place. Since the 70's there's was a huge jump in how the guitar was looked at, and the technicallity of some of the music. There are alot guys playing now, that if it came down to "cutting heads" with the 70's players, it would be no contest, even guys like myself that have had and will have zero influence on anyone. But "back in the day" these guys were paving the way.
JMoore68 2 years ago
right time right place... wouldnt have been the same without him.

Good clip. I was at one these shows. It was so cool to see Ronnie, Bill Church, and Denny Carmassi playing together. It says something about Sammy, how he's able to maintain his friendships over the years. Maybe its because they still know how to have fun!

I agree about Ian Gillan singing Child in Time. Those vocals are awesome. Highway Star too.

MONTROSE ROCKS!!!
redhead5150 2 years ago
this sounds incredible. Think about who else was rocking (and singing) when this song was originally released. Robert Plant and Ian Gillan don't have the vocal longevity that Sammy Hagar has....Holy Crap!
dferris7767 2 years ago
I agree Plant dosn,t have the vocal range that Sammy does but Ian Gillan is another story.Plant will turn blue trying to sing the Immigrant song nowadays. Gillan had incredible vocals during his Deep Purple days.I still like Sammy the best though.
macassa420 2 years ago
Robin Zander has them all beat. He has lost nothing in his voice. Still sounds the same as he did when they first came out in 77
kevinocooldaddy 2 years ago
I disagree with the Zander comment..
I have seen CT in concert 15 times, and there is one song where he has to go a octave lower then the record at 1 point .
But,other then that..he can hit em all!
formula602 2 years ago
Zander is one of Rock's great vocalists...but to say he sounds like he did when he was 24? I don't think so, coolD. But who does, right? Zander and Cheap Trick still rock hella hard.
