Everyone keeps bagging out the Chargers about handling, I don't know why? If they handled like shit, why did they do so well over in N.Z??? Aren't their tracks tight? Also, some here keep saying if the track in this clip was longer the falcon would've past the Charger, how long do you want the track to be?? Ten miles?!? Hey did you know Moffat's car was heavily modified, did you notice the other falcons couldn't keep up with his?
Also, a little known fact, Ford complained when they found out C.A.L were planning on a 1 stop race in 71, officials changed the rules to benefit the falcon at the very last minute. Plus I thought it was against the rules to push your cars out of the pits, no one complained when ford was doing that.
Great vid, Chief engineer at C.A.L wanted to race a 340 but, because they wanted to promote their Hemi, they raced it. Not to mention they didn't have any more funds to race anything but the Hemi. By the way, Chargers handle quite nicely, I can assure you, also, did you know that the 49 that finished 3rd at bathurst was a second hand car! Chrysler had all but finished with racing in 71.
Ian Geoghegan,Graham Ryan, Tony Allen,Ian Diffen,Lawrie Nelson all of these guys drove the Charger in Australia between 71 and 74. Some top ten finishes a few DNF's but no wins. No touring car championships ,no Bathurst wins. Highway Patrol used them in Australia for a short time. They where unstable at high speeds and the rumor at the time was they had to put bags of cement in the boot to stop the tail floating at speed. Chrysler should have put the 265 in the Centura with a 4 speed.
Now despite all of the advatanges Ford and Holden had at the time, Chrysler almost took Ford & The General at Bathurst - with a 6cyl engine and without any of the above.
Id say it makes FORD & HOLDEN engineering look pretty bad now would'nt you?
If there was ever a retro reincarnation that I would love to see it would be a charger for sure. Love them, they are old now, but the way they make you feel is almost drug-like. Great looks, great size, not that heavy considering, very macho and yet not over the top. I well preserved one is one to admire. Great vid...to bad history wasnt that kind in Aussie, but they were extremely successful over here in NZ over a very long time.
Everyone keeps forgetting one massive handicap chargers had in races, there brake got that HOT, that when there tyres where removed in the pits, the team had to wait for the wheel studs to cool down before putting on new tyres ...
@RAJSTA81 The other major issue they had was gearboxes - they had big troubles getting a 4 speed and earlier Pacers and chargers had a 3 speed on the floor
Hey boys chill out they are cars they are all good old cars and we will probably agree much better and more nostalgic than the crap that is built these days enjoy the cruises but dont be shitting all over each other in public. chill out.
Ha ha , what a child you are! You lern da naughty wordies. Grow up spaz!! 5 Fords? Cant u find at least one that drives any good? Good to see your brother has some sense. Too bad he didnt educate u by telling u that the VE V8 won its class at Bathurst in 1968!!!...Beating a Falcon GT auto and Monaro GTS 327 Auto. VG Pacers came 4th 5th, and 7th outright in the 1970 Bathurst, AHEAD of 12, thats right 12!!! GTHO Falcons. Do some research Genius. Looooser!!
@slekekeh What an absolute WANKER you are, You cant admit when your beat, you deadshit. You Have to have the last idiot word , like a real low life smegma sucker that you are. Sorry to resort to your gutter language, but thats all you understand you micro penis Fwit.

My Daliy driver is my Narooma Blue BA XR6 Turbo...Whats yours, dick wanker...a Fiesta??? Who's laughing now Pussy boy.!!!
(And yes, I prefer the Late XR Fords over the 300C)
@kramrollin69 I'm not beat, you just believe your own bullshit. A Fiesta is not a falcon , an XR8 is. Like I said Vals are cool, I quite like them, but their torsion bar frontend was a weak point compared to the Fords. So pull your head in softcock and try some viagra. Then you and your mum will be happy.
@slekekeh What a total Wanker you are, you're the softcock you twit. You have NO idea about Chrysler front ends, they are far superior to the Ford coil springs of the time..What a load of crap u sprout. What are you 12!! Do your research genius, then come and talk facts. The GT HOs handled like marshmellows and went thru tyres like no tomorrrow. Get some education on the subject, you've embarrassed yourself too much already, little boy.
@slekekeh weak point? fully adjustable ride height camber and toe in by the turn of a nut? are you insane? its actually rather sophisticated for its time. certainly better than the setup ford had been using since the f.e.!
Actually the Valiants handled better than the Ford GT and won many races on the Tighter tracks, they just didnt have the legs on the long tracks, the 340 would have done much better, and yes, would still have out handled the Ford. There was much more they could have done but they were too cheap. Talking to Leo Lennard, (NZ) should have been the first.
@slekekeh Spoken like a True Holden driver. Have you ever driven a Valiant? Valiants are FAR superior handlers than any Ht-HQ Holden or XY-XW Fords. I know, Ive driven them all.
@kramrollin69 " Spoken like a True Holden driver" Fuck you WANKER I've got 5 falcons, 4 of which are V8's . My brothers got 2 VE Val's, my mate had a VC and also a VE. So I have driven my fair share of each. My XW's out-handle any Val I've driven. You probably drive a Toyota you softcock.
Chrysler worked everything out except how to make a car go around a corner personally i blame the torsion bar front end any v8 charger was just a gimmick the tested the 340 with the mule and it was just to heavy and cornering was even worse
great vid , i won't say valiant is best ( that would be biased ) BUT a chrysler six vs a v8 of any sort is pretty good in my books .. long live the ladies and gents that keep the aussie muscle car debate alive and well just like their cars ,,,,,bloody A+++ to the lot of you
yeah chryslers are quick and allways will be. holden and ford have thier ups and downs, but back then, the fastest factory cars were valiants from ranger sedan to e-49 chargers. example. a a 4bbl 4-speed 308 hq holden done an 18.0 quartermile. 2bbl 3-speed vh valiant done 15.9.. :D but hey, all the classic aussie muscle cars beat all this modern plastic :)
the gtho was the fastest competition raceing sedan in v8s and the street.. but i admit my uncles rebuilt e49 charger did kick ass stock but all my old man needed was a mild windsor cam setup 3inch x with extractors it had the e49 beat. plus the e49 was to expensive to have the 318 replaced as where the 265 was the better option. my old also had a 265 with mild cams exhaust and use to run low 13's down a quarter in the day. it was a sky blue machine. he had 2 in fact one stock and one street.
you guys need to wake up to ur self, e49 charger, fastest 2 door in 71, 265 was the fastest production 6cyl back then, the chargers kicked ass it was only bathurst they couldnt win because they never had the money ford and holden did, in nz they dominated, and a hemi will keep pulling all day, they never lost a engine a bathurst unlike ford and holden!!!!
the valients only had a 3 speeder so they were quick off the line but they had nothing down the straight, also with there 3 speed gear boxes they couldnt do much compression braking to slow down which hurt them alot, the chargers were fast cars and great looking cars! but there gear box was there achilles heel and they didnt last long (the gear boxes), imagen what a charger could do with a ford toploader ;-)
When new the Cgarger E38's and E49's were both faster and quicker than a 'ho off the showroom floor but the ford could have more done to it. It is a pity the Charger with 340 and the lot never got released, similarly with the torana and Falocn that canned at the same time
a charger does 12.4 seconds over the 1/4 and the ford does high 12vs but who noes that charger might have more then 302hp wat can ya say there just simply the best n fastest straight 6 in the world shitty ford lovers :)
@SuperTamponBandit of course - thats why nobody wants them and they're worth no money....both are good cars. I really thought this playground bullshit arguing died in the 80's.
but the difference is one is a 2 door and the other is a 4 door so there in 2 different catagories..one being the fastest accerating car for 27 years and the other being the fastest 4 door production car for years..there both great cars..and all holden could do back then was watch as both of these cars went flying past them
haha u ford fags just cant take it that the e49 charger is the faster car ooo and better hahaah unreliable 351 i bet u could flog a 351 like i can a 265
a charger out of the factory did 14.4 and these days i've been told should do 13's on new tires. not bad considering there a n/a 6cyl built in the 70's. the gtho's did high 14's low 15's from memory

Both the GTHO and the E49 were unbelievable cars of their time. Let's put things into conext/perpsectibe though shall we?
Chrysler's Racing Budget: Nil
Chrysler's Development Program: Non existant
Chrysler's Engineer's: Unbelievable
Chryslers racing record: Excellent (except Bathurst)
Fastest Aussie acclerating car for nearly 25 yrs? Chrysler
Fastest 1/4" mile for the same time: Chrysler

If you ticked the right boxes when buying a Chrysler back then, you could get almost anything. eg.. There was 1 E49 ute & 1 E38 VH Pacer sedan built.
