Thank you Dick. Changing styles (from classicial) is not that easy. A stroke messed up the original playing, although things are fine now, but it did force me to finally try and sort some jazz playing out. I try to learn from everyone and get pretty pissed off with certain 'purist critics' I see on the web. Same with classical. If it doesn't suit their prejudices they think it's valueless.

Dick, would you mind if I asked you a simple question. I am a classical player of many decades who took up jazz only a couple of years back. I'm pretty good with modes and scales etc, but I would appreciate it if you could recommend any books to improve my solos. I tend to get stuck in the same old groves.

@petebass2 No problem Pete. I love Joe Pass' material (Joe Pass Guitar Style and Joe Pass on Guitar. A good licks book would be Les Wise's Bebop Bible. For transcribed jazz guitar solos Wolf Marshall is a good choice. Or Charlie Parker on Guitar by Mark Voelpel for Bird transcriptions.

Got the Joe Pass Guitar Style book as you suggested and have worked through it. It was excellent with the last section being a great way of improving one's melody to the chords used. Thanks again DIck.

@dutchbopper I just want to add my vote on the Les Wise book. It would take a lifetime to internalize all the licks, and they are for the common chords and chord progressions as well. Probably one of my most used books as well as the other ones you recommended. All great books with very good value for the money! "Guitar Style" aids in sight reading skills as well at the same time as one develops vocabulary.
