mma and boxing are really the only sports that require courage. You don't have to be brave to throw a football, or dunk a basketball, but you gotta be brave to take on guys much larger than you and to step into the cage or the ring knowing your opponent can break you. A sport is an athletic competition to show who is the better man. Who can throw a rock the furthest, who can run the fastest or who is the better warrior. There isn't a more base and primal social instinct.
Sports as he knows it are similar games that are more convoluted and have greater spectator value than track. But any competition that has some sort of athletic fortitude is inherently a sport whether it's roshambo or duck duck goose. Or competitive suicide drills. Or exhibitional combat.
