He wins the award for being the most boring, simple, uncreative, and all-around worst bassist EVER. Compare him to Geddy Lee. Rush's easiest song is harder than AC/DC's hardest
Well, better listen to Manowar or Helloween then. There you get lots and lots of noodling. AC/DC has become the best band in the world and the Young brothers wouldn't keep Williams if he wasn't excellent for the job he has in that very band.
@throwsand AC/DC is all about simple hard hitting 4/4 beat music. If Cliff was asked to do more on a mainstream scale, im confident he would deliver.
Rush thrive on being technical! in a way thats also their fault cos people dont give a crap! only die hard music geeks care and analyse. AC/DC are "the peoples band" simple and catchy always wins! Huge bass solos and random licks would sound retarded in an AC/DC track, its a rhythm instrument! not a lead guitar

You're right Cliff. My influnces and favorite music came in from my teens to 20's which we're you guys,Nazareth, Sabb, Priest,Scorps,Journey,Zepp,Van Halen,Accept, Saxon,Styx,Rainbow, etc.I posted a song I did recently as AC/DC meets Nazareth ..I'm 47 and just did my first real original show in Syracuse NY where I saw your Back In Black tour at the war memorial in 1980.
Always loved your albums and still enjoy them. Tom
Cliff can do something none of all those Geddy Lee style virtuoso's can.
He has been capable of playing incredibly simple things, simple, but perfect for AC/DC, for almost 40 years now... WITHOUT GETTING BORED OF DOING SO.
I don't think any of those fast, technical players could have done that. Musical technique is one thing, but doing this takes some serious musical drive...
Yeah I know. Geddy has influenced a ton of horrible prog/metal bass players with 6 string bass guitars. But those of them who are wise, can also appreciate a dude like Cliff. If you tried to implement a Geddy-like style into any style of music, you would never get any work. Some people actually prefer the bass player to lay down the low end and not sound like a frustrated guitar player. And Geddy has more style? He used to play geek-prog-rock and know he plays lame alternative soft rock. Please
You've just revealed that you know NOTHING. Cliff Williams is great because he plays in the pocket. He can lock in with the drums and create a rocksolid foundation. I've heard plenty of you amateur bass players on youtube and none of you know a thing about rhythm and locking in with the drummer. Your timing is all over the place and that is one of the reason why you are will never make it in the biz- Sorry...but the stupidity in here is overwhelming. Don't be a bitter asshole.
@TheMoistdesert Compare that to Geddy Lee and Neil Peart of Rush, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, John Entwistle and Keith Moon of the who, and Bill Ward and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath. Now, I'd like you to rank them (including rudd and williams) in numbers 1-5, one being the best. If you do not put them at 5, you are an ignorant fool who obviously has never touched a bass guitar or heard of a drum fill
@throwsand They are all great. And you know why? Because they all understand the importance of serving the song within the band's context. Geddy does what is best for Rush, JPJ did what was best for the Led and Cliff WIlliams does what is best for AC/DC. They all understand that and that is why they are all successful. So you want me to rank them? You imply that Geddy is "better" because he is a more flashy player? That is borderline childish. They are all good in different ways. Simple as that
@TheMoistdesert You are so very wrong.. musicians judge other musicians by their ability. Geddy's technical ability far outshines that of Williams. He isn't too flashy, he just takes the time to write complex, melodic basslines unlike Cliff. He keeps in complete rhythm with Peart while playing incredibly hard things, and he sings at the same time. Geddy is so much technically better, holds the beat better, and has influenced so many other musicians than cliff. Cliff has no style or originality
This is a great interview. I've never really taken the time to listen to Cliff....he's the quiet one in the back (but crucially important). But that was so interesting. Amazing actually. I wish they had of asked him about Bon though (and his feelings/ thoughts).
Cliff is truly a nice person he lives in my town and will stop and take the time to talk, he has some great storys --- what a life these guys have lived and the things they have seen, Great band if you get the chance to see them don't let it pass you by.
Cliff must seriously be the luckiest guy in the whole world, I mean, ac/dc with bon scott at their top just call him and sayin that they need a new bass guitarist
@TheNonautomatoN Thats because they arent full of themselves. They are just regular guys who happen to play kick-ass rock n roll. AC/DC have stood the test of time just as well as the Stones, or maybe even better. No better rhythm section in the world than Malcolm, Cliff, and Phil Rudd.
You'd usually say you don't respect a bassplayer that only plays eighths
But you just gotta have respect for Cliff BECAUSE he does it ONLY! He's a god! Noone can play like that and still be so cool except your the bassplayer of fuckin ACDC!
Cliff is what i aspire to be as a bass player. up the guts & he is so reliable & has a great feel. His partnership with Phill Rudd must be such a pleasure to have experienced. to lock in his stance & play next to Phill's high hat must feel awesome.
i play a musicman too so its cool to hear phil say he loves his bass.
