Emil doesn't just play, he feels every note. He is a master at his craft. A genius. No pianist out there comes close to his technique, precision, tone or emotion. That's a fact. You get those that try to play too fast, try too hard, those that have some technique but it sounds empty. Emil plays it to perfection.

these people who read that Schnabel and Haskil are sooo great.Go listen to da recs they made and the many live recs of HASKIL and see for yourself.SCHNABELS Brahms 2 is a shocking mess.I cant believe it wasnt scrapped. It IS GOD AWFUL .Not one phrase tells us anything.

There is an abundance of GREAT superlative Mozart playing.Pires and Schiff ,Uchidamy faves.

I respect everyone's views. I must say that I love Gilels in this. By the way, I don't know who the conductor is but I do know who he is definitely not - Karl Bohm :)

It's interesting, but I prefer pianists such as Clara Haskil and Artur Schnabel in music such as this; Gilels' tone is monochromatic and his style is more akin to Beethoven here. So few pianists make stylistic distinctions among the different composers; my piano teacher insisted on this quality. Karl Bohm, as always, is the superb conductor here.
