I make this allll the time during the holidays. My aunt taught me how to make it. I normally use two boxes of cake mix. It's so good and chewy! It's very popular in the south. A lot of people here up north never heard of this. Nor have they heard of chess pie!!! It's great too!!!
thanks Betty. I've made your Chess Bars this afternoon and they are yummy. I like the texture, chewy and crunchy.. I'll make this again for our Christmas party.
Hi Betty. Thanks for all of your wonderful recipe ideas. Just made this one but added a bag of sweetened coconut flakes, and a couple more eggs. Yummy! Thanks again!
My mom makes this dessert alot, I actually made it and took it to my bible study group the other nite. We add a cup of pecans to the bottom layer though. Its really good. She calls it Gooey butter cake. When i took it to to group, everyone was calling it chess bars, i kept saying it was gooey butter cake. Guess i know now why they was calling it that.
Betty, I just made these exactly how you made them, except with gluten free mix since I have to eat gluten free. They were out of this world! Thanks so much for posting this recipe.
Wow Mrs. Betty, all I can say is that most of your recipes I've seen look very tasty and easy to make!!! I have this same recipe and I love it soo much!!! Thanks for taking time out of your day to bring us great, easy and tasty dishes!!!

@madandlu I don't think bacon and eggs go with ice cream--for me. Thanks for commenting!

Because they taste like chess pie! (Chess pie is a southern pie like pecan pie--just no pecans.)

Cool. But just wondering, why are they called "Chess" bars?
