  • I make this allll the time during the holidays. My aunt taught me how to make it. I normally use two boxes of cake mix. It's so good and chewy! It's very popular in the south. A lot of people here up north never heard of this. Nor have they heard of chess pie!!! It's great too!!!

  • My mom makes this dessert alot, I actually made it and took it to my bible study group the other nite. We add a cup of pecans to the bottom layer though. Its really good. She calls it Gooey butter cake. When i took it to to group, everyone was calling it chess bars, i kept saying it was gooey butter cake. Guess i know now why they was calling it that.

  • OH MY this is officially my newest favoritist absolutely decedant yummy scrumtious dessert ever! I luv it!

  • i do love ice cream. have you ever tried egg and bacon ice cream. you need 2 eggs scrambled. 3 bacon rashes. 500ml of cream and 250ml of custard

  • @madandlu I don't think bacon and eggs go with ice cream--for me. Thanks for commenting!

  • Betty, I just made these exactly how you made them, except with gluten free mix since I have to eat gluten free. They were out of this world! Thanks so much for posting this recipe.

  • Thanks for the wonderful feedback, especially that they worked with gluten-free ingredients!

  • Because they taste like chess pie! (Chess pie is a southern pie like pecan pie--just no pecans.)

  • Cool. But just wondering, why are they called "Chess" bars?
