do you have to know all this triditions to live in japan? i mean do i have to start watching anime and read mangas know all their holydays what they wear ? start collecting toys and stuff like that?
(second part of the comment, bloody character count..)
now, maybe that's just me getting in to the heavy vibe of the movie, but I could actually see the guys flinch away from the girls and then like " oh wait, I'm SPOUSE to let her put her tentacles everywhere she likes..." big money just ain't worth that kind of strain
hopefully this movie will push me into writing some fanfiction instead of keeping it in my head.
I just recently found your videos. I find them very informing so far. I would like to suggest when you explain something if you can put in some pictures of like the different kimono's and other things so we can see what they actually look like. Otherwise very informative.
In the Japanese workplace, is it similar in nature to America where its common place to find backstabbers, manipulators, and brown nosers?
My mom, who was Japanese always gave simple advice to work hard, obey the boss, be nice.. while not bad advice at all, she didn't really understand the social dynamics and what it took to get ahead in many workplaces in America. Thanks
I appreciate all the time and effort you put into these FAQs, but I will have to strongly disagree with your view of Memoirs of a Geisha. Arthur Goldman so grossly misrepresented the life of the woman's life on whom he based the story around that she ended up suing him. Geiko do NOT sell their virginity to the highest bidder, that was done only among the prostitutes. Mizuage (the word) has 2 meanings. She was talking about her spending habits. Read Sherridan Prasso's The Asian Mystique.
Cont'd. Yes Memoirs of a Geisha is a good book in some aspects but he should not have made such a grave error (mistranslating such a critical word in the story). And also if you decide to read Sherridan Prasso's book remember to take it with a grain of salt as it is very sexist towards men but makes some very interesting points, one of them being the pointing out of Goldman's mistake and the weight behind it.
I have a question. According to my Japanese sensei, in Japan the relationship between people are cooler. Japanese people are more reserved? have you noticed this attitude among japanese people?
your sensei is definitely right. especially in the work place. also in clubs and bars it is not as common to just walk up to the opposite sex and expect a welcome response.
still if you approach most japanese with a polite and warm manner they are for the most part very responsive and kind.
I wonder.. I'm going to go all "I sound like a geek and sound like I know nothing because of what I'm saying" but I've noticed in a lot of animes, they act like they are dieing during the summer XD;
Is it extremely hot or very humid or.. basically, what is the weather like? :|
well dont get the idea that its super competitive. its not so much that as immigration requires you to have a degree. now in the upper echelon of jobs such as university and international schools it can get very competitive because there are very few positions open or they require high levels of qualifications or a high level of japanese ability.
Why are you in japan? What do you do? Japan seems like a Disneyland on ecstasy

@moad
LOL you're not going to learn about Japan off anime/manga.
Some of the information in these things may be true, but most and many aren't.

Thanks for the info. Do people usually buy their kimono(s?) off the rack or do they usually have it tailor-made? Are they very expensive?

I live half in japan and America (my dad works there and my mom is here in the US)
and I can say that the sex culture is reallly open, you see it everywhere, and the idea of fantasy isnt weird or looked down upon, neccecarily.
everytime I go to a book store I get really embarrassed by the books laying around lol
