  • Looks like solder

  • anyone knows where I could get mercury ore(pure)?

  • terminator 2 jajajaj

  • T 1000!!! IS ALIVE!!! BWAHAHAHA

  • lol its funny how the most toxic non radioactive thing in the world ia do fun to play with

  • @laynecaffy i know lots of thing alot more toxic then liquid mercury. arsenic, cianide, botuline for example ^^

  • '

yes i have a liquid mercury switch in my vehicle hood,,,

when the hood is open up then light on,,,

hood down closed then light off

  • What would happen if you can in contact with liquid mercury?

  • @Momo66342 try it and find out

  • y dont u use liquid nitrogen instead of dry ice?

  • @TheLonewolf223 Same results :)

  • @mabakken and its cheaper!!! :D

  • Is elemental mercury the safe non-poisonous mercury?

  • @ericm1988 mercury is highly poisonous its just mercury now go make a video of you drinking it

  • @ExhibitedGolem Elemental mercury can be safely handled with bare hands, just wash them, AND NEVER DRINK IT!!

  • where does mercury come from anyway?

  • @htirah100 space

  • And there you have it. You could technically shoot someone with a mercury bullet which would then melt and leave no barrel marks to match it to the gun it came from.

  • @Commack08 Are you crazy!!?? Mercury is toxic! >:)

  • @PersianElite95 Exactly.. If the initial gunshot wound does not kill your victim, the mercury very well may.

  • @PersianElite95 ITS Elemental Mercury

  • this is very beautiful!

  • you can buy mercury at w w w(dot)plantsandstuff.ecrater(dot)com/

  • lol bad commentary because i said i will not touch it...

  • im wondering whered u get mercury???

  • You might not want to teeter mercury like

that, for it is very dense and could break

    its glass container.

  • the glass might be mixed with plastic

  • u should try boiling it next

  • ok now here is a question: where do i get dry ice from?^^

  • i would never try to touch the acetone at -78 celsius...

  • @Killermodxx i would

  • that shit is dangerous...

i wouldn't touch it even if it's in a closed container.

  • Frozen Mercury could probably be great for a bullet.

  • The expanding gases are likely to reheat the bullets, wouldn't ya say? So ya'd end up poisoning yourself.

  • Yeah, you're right.

  • @Zethux It would probably melt and splatter all over the place when it's shot.

  • Frozen Mercury looks like Chrome.

  • use ethanol

  • where i can get mercury?

  • you are an alchemist

  • isn't mercury toxic?

  • it is toxic

  • ELEMENTAL Mercury isn't. You're thinking of the kind in thermometers.

  • yes it is. I'm chemical and I know. Mercury its toxic if you tuch eat/drink , or if you inhale it.

So, if you say that elemental mercury ins´t toxic, drink it. Drink 1 litter of Hg.

My friend died of cancer because, he drank 250ml of mercury. Do the same.

  • Calling BS on this one. If you were any sort of chemist or worked with chemicals you would know elemental mercury will usually not poison a healthy, human adult (Although it can RARELY still poison a sick person or child.). Inorganic mercury is the sort that causes severe poisoning.

And no form of mercury has ever proven to cause cancer in human beings.

The next time your gonna make up crap, at least Google the stuff your about to say to make sure its true.

  • @vitorix24

orally taken mercury isnt poisonous because it cant be absorbed by the gastro-intestinal-tract. its only vaporized mercury and all kinds of salts of mercury that really can be poisonous. besides if your friend drank 250ml mercury he probably died because of the heavy weight in his stomach*gg*

  • ya ya ya

  • Your friend is retarded for drinking mercury

  • he died asshole. suicide.

    :S

  • no DUH

  • LOL drink it

  • sweeettt.

    that's cool.

i just recently learned about mercury in chemistry. ahahah.

  • it's cool how it doesnt leave any traces on the glass it slides on

  • mercury is slightly repulsive to glass.

  • Looks almost like silver chocolate.

  • please, upload the sinthesis of cacodylic acid

  • how can a make dry ice?

  • why would you want to freeeze it , its not fun to play with when it is frozen

  • i can make mercury magnetic

  • water is the only liquid known 2 man that expands when frozen

  • r u people building a UFO without Dave?

  • When the mercury is frozen is it magnetic

  • Nope

  • thank you. is there any way to get mercury to have magnetic properties that you know of?

  • I doubt it :/

  • I also highly doubt it. But mercury is a superconductor when supercooled. If you use dry ice (or even better, liquid nitrogen or helium) you could lower the resistance of the mercury to a very low number.

  • 4.15 K is the superconducting point, so the only option is liquid helium, but it's very expensive and hard to obtain.

  • i have a video called "mad hatter", where i make mercury magnetic, spread the word

  • my brother ate my mercury he's dead now!so no one play with mercury not even touch him!! is toxiccccc

  • It's toxic if you don't wash your hands after.

Just touching it won't kill you!

As you said, he died because he ATE it!

  • I hate to sound like an ass about this, but sounds like he should receive a Darwin award for that. Eating a heavy metal in any quantity is asking for trouble.

  • when its frozen it doesnt have the meniscus

  • the only way to stop the guy from terminator 2 lol

  • Where do you get mercury?

  • they throw out flickering or damaged Neon beer signs at the giant warehouse. I take them out the dumpster, and pour the Mercury out.

NEVER shake the tubes...that will moleculize the mercury making it impossible to simply POUR out.

  • how else can you get mercury and how long does the acetone stay cold

  • well from the hardware store you can buy mercury switches for your house, they only got two drops in them, but that is all each bulb will have also.

Acetone can be bought from a Painting kind of craft store like Dick Blick for removing semi-dry paints.

  • well mercury causes cancer so i doubt u will ever get mercury unless u get permision from your govermant or state

  • isn't there mercury in thermometors?

  • There used to be. You can still find mercury thermometers, but now most use some other liquid because of the (vastly overestimated) toxicity concerns.

  • I have quite a few left from years back,we still use them sometimes.

My father used to break some of them and play with the mercury in a cardboard box when he was little and he had no ill effects or anything else that matter.

  • Wha mercury!

Such a dangerous and toxic element....

  • My science teacher gave us mercury and I held it in my hand for about 2 minutes and then the teacher asked for it back but I spilled it all over the floor... and then the next day I asked for mercury and he said he got in serious trouble for bringing it. Should I be worried? It's been months and I feel fine... (thank god I didn't have any cuts on my hands

  • If the mercury was in a sealed glass while you held it, there shouldn't be a problem.

Murcury is poison and like every other fluid it evaporates. If you touch, breathe or eat it you'll get a heavy metal (not the music) poisoning.

  • If your teacher said it was okay, then it could not be that dangerous I guess.

Eating would have been fatal. :)

  • Yeah the thing is he acted like it never happened... oh and then my friend gave me some and I kept it in my home for like a week out in the open just in like a small cup. Then my friend's mom told me to put it in a small container and throw it in the dumpster. She was the one who told me about mercury poisoning. I've been having stange pains in my wrists, but I don't think if it's from the mercury. But I mean I'm all good now.

  • Hopefully and Luckily. o_o

  • You got lucky,It was very bad practice for the teacher to let you handle mercury (or any toxic substance) in that manner, and mercury can absorb through the skin and into the brain, but it doesn't take months for it to happen, so you should be fine

  • mewrox99: Actually I don't think it can be absorbed through the skin. It's a very dense metal, and that will probably prevent it from beïng absorbed through it. All you've got to worry about are the vapours, taking care you don't eat it - and making sure it doesn't mess up the carpet!

  • Mercury gives off fumes all the time, and they penetrate the skin, and also water, so for instance, storing it under a alyer of water doesn't change the rate of evaporation much.

Only dense plastic, glass and some metals keep the vapors away. AFAIK.

  • nope. any contact WILL get mercury into your system

  • it wont go in to you if you toutch it if thats what you mean

  • this is elemental mercury, it won't absorb into your skin. he clearly states it when he introduces the mercury in the test tube.

  • You need to be exposed to mercury for a long time before it hurts you - for example my parents used to hold it unprotected in their hands at school (that was normal practice back then!) and they have suffered no ill effects. What usually causes damage is when you ingest it, or having it around you all the time (some people got sick because it had soaked into school desks / stationary etc)

Anyway, don't worry about it, you'll be fine :)

  • aslong as its not methyl mercurry

  • Yeah, my last Physics and Chemistry teacher used to tell about how you could get mercury anywhere and how she used to play with it :)

  • why acetone? is it just because it doesnt freeze in that tempurature?

  • on ebay they sell lots of mercury switches. just buy one and break it :P

  • mercury is so beautiful :D

  • kinda weird to see metal melt without starting to glow red

    (I know it's mercury don't lecture me!)

  • mercury can kill you that's why it has been band from schools all over i think around the 80's

  • wooooo i didnt know,, thanks

  • i have 2 cuestions

1 were can i get alot mercury ?

2 it is safe to play with?

  • lololol retard

  • jajajaja stupid

  • 1: not easily

    2: HECK NO.

  • this is so awesome and unusual to see, the liquid is bubbling so you would think it's boiling but it's cold as shit, i love chemistry so much

  • nice video 5*

    beautiful metal

  • are these demonstrations very expensive for you?

  • It is a quite expensive hobby, one might say.

This particular experiment, though, is not very expensive as the only expense is the Dry- Ice.

  • there u go... the metal mercury... lol... idk why ppl are so sike about mercury being a liquid metal.

  • kako ti jedes govna lovele jebala te kemija vise

  • what would happen if you just put the mercury in their without the test tube

  • it would jsut freeze... but then it'll be un organized... and u cant take it out... well until all the dry ice is evaporated... but that would be a waste... and u still cant take it out XD

  • thank you for this video it is very interesting

  • I made liquid Chlorine by mixing KMnO4 with HCl acid, the gas went into a test tube that was submerged in dry ice and acetone mixture. Later this year I'm gonna be making solid chlorine with LN2 and some solid organic compounds (eg Alkanes)

  • what if i hold the mercury element what well it do to my hand

  • If you hold it while it is solid, it will most likely burn your hand from being very cold. If you hold it at room- temperature, it will feel like something you have never touched before. It is not without danger, though, as Mercury is readily absorbed through skin. If you have to try it, I suggest a short- encounter in the form of touch by a finger =)

  • i held mercury b4 9 (im 11)

  • Where can I get a hold of mercury?

  • mmm... popsicles

  • u drank it. :( u kno that it's SUPER toxic right?

  • Read 5 comments down!

  • ooooooooooooooh! !_!

  • does it magnetic?

  • isnt mercury supposed to be a reddish color when it freezes?

  • wtf hiw the hell would mercury change coulor

  • i read somewhere that in solid form mercury is a reddish brown color. at atomic levels color really doesnt exist because light litteraly too small to been seen, so if you change the molecule or whatever it alters the way light bounces off of it and can change color.

  • yes becuz one of mercury's solid forms is cinnibar which is red. but this is pure mercury, cinnibar has other elements mixed in with it.

  • ha! take that you damn mercury!!!

  • so nice!!

  • sweet..now stick ur hand into the bubbly liquid...lets experiment.

  • so... what would happen if you were to drink that?

  • u die

  • Are you an idiot? You would die!!! Mercury is in the top 10 poisoness elements!!! Only a complete moron would drink Mercury!!!

  • If you want to suicide drink it

  • Actually...drinking Mercury wouldn't be bad at all. Your stomach does not take up Mercury, and therefore it would simply pass your system!

  • I challenge you to drink 10 ml of Hg :-D

Very nice video by the way. Low-temp experiments are always interesting. Gotta get em some dry ice soon..!

  • unless you have wound in your stomach and guts =)

  • Did he open it? no!

"merury actual amits toxic vapors" - wow! didn't think you could make that many spelling mistakes in one sentence :P

  • Seeing your post makes me really sad. First: Mabakken has dozens of videos here, and I know that he's been doing a lot of chemistry both at school and in private for years, so don't doubt him when it comes to skill and knowledge. Second: You could at least TRY to spell! Nobody is going to take you seriously when you write like that; my eyes hurt.

  • could you use alchohals such as isopropyl to aceiv the low tempeature?(or any alchohol or along that line)

  • You could use any (non-toxic, preferrably) liquid with a freezing point below -78,5*C, that is why acetone is used here.

  • too bad mercury is deadly. If it wasn't i'd be doing that all the time.

  • were did you get the murcury at? cool experement by the way

  • If mercury would be always solid in room temperature it would be a very beautiful metal, maybe precious. Thanks for the Video. 5/5

  • i dont know minimi because not as just for being pretty it would be a precious metal.

Mercury oxidises, is a heavy metal, poisonous and harmful for the environment besides your mentioning of just being liquid. I think without those facts the mercury would at least be a new option for metals available on trinkets, fashion, drops!

  • Kool vid 5/5

  • flipping sweet, how hard is it when its kept that cool?

  • I haven't exactly felt it when it is that cold, but I guess it behaves like any other metal that is solid at room temperature.

  • frozen mercury liiks so nice :D

  • i heard you can also freeze the mercury with addiction of liquid nitrogen. Why does it happen?

  • do you have any advise for me.

I do not have access to dry ice, Is there any way i could get to that temperature without it?

eg, dissolving NH4NO3 in water then put in freezer or something?

    thanks in advance :)

  • Try getting a hold of "bottled air" This is a compressed haloalkane in a can, and if you spray it on mercury (whilst holding the can inverted), it should freeze it :)

  • I used liquid propane. You need to invert the can and open valve. After some boiling sounds, the liquid flows out. Boiling point is -42 C which is enough to freeze Hg.

  • Wow, that the best one I've seen. I could even see the pit in the frozen mercury when it was frozen. Very very cool video.

  • Thank you very much =)

I forgot to tell in the video why there is a "pit":

Mercury has what is called a "Negative Coeffisient of Surface Tension", which is why the meniscus goes upwards and why it is "non- sticking" =)

  • could the same experiment be done by just using liquid nitrogen instead of adding dry ice to acetone?

  • Yes of course. Liquid Nitrogen is ca 117 degrees colder than Dry Ice!

  • Very interesting. Where exactly can you get mercury? Most suppliers supply it for industrial purposes and sell it in large flasks... that weigh 76 lbs! Where could I get small flasks, like the one you have? I would appreciate your help on this one, ive been trying to find some for a long time!

    Regards, and nice video!! =D

  • The one in my small flask is actually a part of a 30 ml container of Mercury purchased by a chemical supplier. Mine came in a 30 ml bottle. Trust me, I understand your distress in finding Mercury, I've been there. But what I did was that I went on a hunt for old thermometers. If the color of the "Alcohol" in it is silver, you most probably got Mercury. Also, old electrical swithes and old sphygmamonometers have them in them. :)

  • Thanks! I don't know any chemical suppliers in my immediate are.. but I can try looking for some. And i do have one old thermometer, but then again about 3 mL of mercury just isn't as good as 30 ;) I'll keep trying! Thanks for your response :)

  • another source (rather expensive for a small yield) mercury tilt switches from electronic component stores or maybe even some online web stores

  • You can get it in ebay, just as you wanted, in small amounts. Go to Search page and search for "Mercury Quicksilver" or "Liquid Mercury" or "Mercury Metal". Make sure you search with "All Category" selected in drop box.

  • I think you have misunderstood the point of the video if you're commenting on my fingernails :P

But I know...I can't help it (well I can). It does have its advantages thoug to bite nails: you can't scratch anyone, puncture your gloves etc. But that's another discussion =)

  • nice hand nails

  • How many grams of Hg is that?

  • I would guess about 150 grams. The density of Mercury is 13,54 gcm-3, meaning that one milliliter weigh almost 14 grams.

  • How many grams of Hg is that?

  • nice video
