What an amazing song. The solitary wandering cowboy out on the plains, the solitary 18 wheel truck driver, the shame of our treatment of Native Americans and the trail of tears, the solitary soldier in our current foreign RPG "wars". Who but Lyle can stitch with that thread.
Q tv is great, I'm a recent fan. Canadian broadcast right? Where else can I see a very good interview with Christopher Hitchens and a fine performance from my fellow statesman, the great Lyle Lovett? Good taste from the folks at Q:) Lyle has a real knack for the turn of phrase, "sometimes at night I hear voices, home is where my horse is," also see God Will from Lyle to catch another one of those great turns of phrase placed on the tail end of a chorus.
Yeah, I concur this is a great tune. Heard it played just acoustic by LL and it rocked, but I really like the mandolin, piano and violin as additions.

That is masterful songwriting. Bypasses all the fluff and taps deep into human experience. Thanks for posting this.

It is hard to believe he has been having hits since the 1980s. He is still great but I miss his 1988 hair!

Amazing!
Is that Stuart Duncan on fiddle?
PS: Check out my rare 80s live version of Lyle singing "If I had a boat" if you like.
