I like seeing Catherine at the top of the list (it would be in my top 5 games by any developer in 2011). Nice channel---good to see a different perspective.
@peterpez Yeah, it was definitely in my top 5 for the year even if I wasn't talking about only Japanese developed games. I think I spent more time with that game than almost anything else this year.
@DaAsianMan666 I've played Basara 1 and 2 on the PS2 but I haven't played any of the more recent ones (3 and the fighter). I'm not sure if I like those more than Dynasty Warriors or the other way around.
A VERY nice list of games, and the sad thing? I haven't played one of these! LOL. Speaking of Suda 51, though, I actually just picked up No More Heroes on the Wii the other day, so I'm excited to get my hands on the game. Shadows of the Damned looks very quirky, over the top, juvenile, and hella fun! :) I'm sure I'll be picking it up soon, because the price has dropped significantly since its release.
I've always been interested in Catherine since I heard about it, so I'm sure I'll get it too!
@relewis2011 Some of them are understandable because they haven't been released outside of Japan but the others you should definitely try out! Definitely get Shadows of the Damned. If you like crude humor, fun gameplay, and 3rd person shooters then the game is great.
Catherine is really really good. I was addicted to it for a while. I couldn't stop playing. I still play it every once in a while.
@DekaBlz I'm really enjoying KoFXIII. Though I got tired of not being able to do any combos so I broke down and ordered a stick yesterday. Hopefully that will speed me up a bit.
Catherine was great. It's got a good story and an addictive play style. Definitely pick it up if you like puzzle games.
I like "Asian women vs alien tentacles" the game. Have you heard of it? I need to get shadow of the damned. I just didn't want to pay full price when it first came out. I'm defi gonna pick up Catherine.
@The8bittheater Yeah, I think that game is called Valis X. LOL
You should definitely get both! You'll definitely like Shadows of the Damned because the whole thing is jokey but horror. It has to be cheap now. It sold like crap so I assume it's bargain bin prices at this point.
Catherine was of the charts fun for me. If you even remotely like puzzle games I would buy it ASAP.
@xcornmuffinx thats so sick man, can i ask how old you were when you moved there? I soooo want to move their but there's a huge language barrier. how long did it take you to learn the language?
@xcornmuffinx wow massive respect for taking a bite out of life and moving there man. Must have been a scary yet exciting feeling, and thanks for answering too I appreciate it.
@ryoatreides1 I had a lot of fun with it. It was like playing a 70's grindhouse movie with added comedy. It's too bad it sold so poorly because I would have liked a sequel.
Joe, Here's the summary of of Otaku no Video: Tanaka (Toshiharu Sakurai), a rabid anime fan, introduces his friend Kubo (Kôji Tsujitani) to his passion. Kubo soon becomes as fascinated as Tanaka, and the pair set out to become the foremost animators in the business with their stereotypical sex-bunny character, Misty May. Akio Ôtsuka narrates this hilarious mockumentary that pokes gentle fun at the conventions of anime and its legions of obsessive fans. (1982)
@GamezOfWar Hell yes! I still go back and play Catherine whenever I'm in a puzzle game mood. The best ending, hands down is the True Cheaters Ending. That one was the most fun at least.
@GamezOfWar Akiba's Trip is right up your alley! It combines all your favorite topics! Games and Japanese girls! I thought it would be a bad game with a goofy concept but instead it turned out to be a rather fun game with a goofy concept. The PSP is really a great system.
Glad you got the Neo Geo CD! The load times are a downside but it's still a great system. If you can, get KoF 98 or 2002 (though I'm not sure if there is a CD for 2002).
@castlevania78 Pretty much everyone who bought it and played it that I've talked to liked it. It's just that nobody bought it. It's a shame because it was definitely a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to Lollipop Chainsaw in 2012. Suda 51 and Grasshopper Manufacture make good games!
@xcornmuffinx Let's hope they actually advertise this one, and don't wind up changing the title to something insipid. I mean, "Shadows of the Damned" sounds like something EA came up with. I don't want to see Lollipop changed to, "Dark Stuff:The Reckoning".
@castlevania78 I'll admit, the name doesn't do it that many favors. I kept confusing it with a few other games in development at the time and I couldn't remember the name. I just gave up and called it The Shinji Mikami and Suda 51 game.
@TheGreenMonkeyKing I'll check it out, though it sounds similar to "Blister" which is also about Otaku and involves post-apocalyptic Japan though it's live action as opposed to animated.
Bro, I tried ripping clothes off women at the mall, telling them I'm saving them from Cancer of course. Then some stupid cops show up and I get arrested! I need to move to Japan ASAP!! lol Shadows of the Damned is a freakin sweet game and it's a shame that people are scared of games that stray away from the norm. Looks like we will never see a sequel. Great list of games Joe, but where is Nickelodeons Enema Simulator? lol
@PointBlankGamez Isn't that always how it goes? You can't just randomly rip clothes off women outside of the world of Japanese video games. I guess people don't want to be saved from vampires these days. LOL
The saddest part about Shadows of the Damned is that it's not so incredibly out there in terms of games. At its heart it's a solid 3rd person shooter! People should have been all over it!
The Nick Enema Sim was developed in the Slovak Republic so it's off the list! LOL
@timspacedout87 Thanks mate, I appreciate it! I cover mostly Japanese games (for my reviews at least) and no hardware or game repairs or whatever it is that luke is doing so hopefully it'll supplement the gaming in Japan experience.
Omg catherine needs to get more attention on my end! I got stuck once they introduced the ice cubes lol dude we need to see if we can game a bit this week! When are you free? Also shadows of the damned has such an amazing soundtrack!!! Awesome list!!!
@zeroXshinobi Man, you can't give up on Catherine! I played the hell out of that game. Sometimes it would take an hour or so just to make it through one section of a night but it was totally worth it.
If you want to get up early I can get some games in pretty much any day but other than that, I have a week off starting from Friday so pretty much anytime is cool after then.
Shadows of the Damned was great! Despite the parts where I fell through the stage and had to reload. LOL
my list is all japanese games lol. i want that akiba'a trip yo. i can't even play western games 99% of the time; i tried playing uncharted 3 last night and nearly puked. i gotta play skyward sword tho...
@roleplayerthegamer What's your list? Akiba's Trip was a ton a fun. I kind of picked it up as a lark because I thought it would be bad but in a fun way but it was actually way better than I thought it would be.
Yeah, I feel you there. I am not a fan of Uncharted. Though I'm not a fan of Zelda either. I'm still waiting for sales but Ni no Kuni and the new Orochi game are more 2011 releases that I haven't gotten to yet. Also, I wanted to put in El Shaddai but it would be #6.
Such a shame Shadow of the Damned sold so badly; the game definitely was a bit rough on the edges but it deserved much better. The game had basically ZERO marketing and kind of a generic name, I bet a lot of people didn't even know it existed. This and Child of Eden are my two "underdogs" of the year.
@Sagentemus Indeed. It did have a lot of bugs but it was incredibly fun. I haven't even gotten to Child of Eden yet. I was really looking forward to it but the Japanese release date was later than the US release date and I'm still waiting for a cheap copy from the US to show up in the mail.
That's SMT Devil Survivor Overclocked a remastered version of the first game with voice acting and some additional content. Devil Survivor 2 will come out February 2012 in NA for the NDS.
@SlyCopper23 haha, that's exactly how I felt. DS:overclocked is literally the only game I want for the 3DS at this point besides the yet to be released Fatal Frame game. Though since I already played the DS version I don't really need the 3DS version for the one extra day.
@SlyCopper23 Yeah, I am put off by the 3DS because I barely used my DS and I bought it at launch. If it weren't for the SMT games and a couple of RPGs It would have ended up as an overly expensive upgrade to the Gameboy Advance.
I'm just worried about the same thing happening with the 3DS so I'm putting it off until there are 10 games that I absolutely want. 9 more to go 3DS! Strangely, the Vita is nearly there already.
@Sagentemus have you played Overclocked? If the 3DS ever has enough games I want to play to where I can justify buying it I'll probably pick it up despite have played through the first 4 times.
Nope, I'm European so no Overclocked for me, at least for now. From what I hear it's basically a refined more user-friendly version of DS with a bit more content. But unless you already own a 3DS or intended to own one anyway, I'd say it's definitely not worth it.
It's a shame the 3DS has a region lock, some of my favorite NDS games (Devil Survivor, Etrian Odyssey and 999) were never published in Europe. I almost thought about importing an American 3DS. Almost.
@Sagentemus I looked at some videos of it and it looks a bit more like Devil Survivor 2 does. Actually, I noticed some Devil Survivor 2 assets in the Overclocked extra content. I don't intend to buy a 3DS until there are at least 10 games I want to buy. Currently there is 1 and it's DS:Overclocked.
Agree on the region locking. What a terrible thing to add to a handheld that, up until this point, was entirely region free. More points for the Vita I guess.
Quick question: Did you get a chance to play Trinity: Zill O'll Zero? If not, I would highly recommend it. It was easily one of my favorite games of 2011, and it was a nice departure from the typical DW/SW games Omega Force is known for.
@MrSnakeeyes55 I have not played it. Does it play like a Dynasty Warriors game or is it turn based like the others? If I can find a copy around I'll pick it up. Though it was released in 2010 so couldn't have been on the list.
Great selection of games by Japanese developer companies of 2011. I would come up with my own list, but I haven't bought much games this year. I'm looking forward to get some games I couldn't get and then some.
@leon4000 Yeah, I have the same problem! There were a bunch more games that I wanted that I either just didn't have the money to get or didn't have the time to get to yet.
I wouldn't mind playing the games you've mentioned. They sound quite good. I would have problems playing the PSP and DS games though because I used to own a PSP but I sold it and I never owned a DS. Heh...
@GX2Productions I bought the DS on launch day and then never really bought any games for it after that. It was such a disappointment for me considering how much I liked the Gameboy Advance. There are good games on it though.
The PSP on the other hand is great! I've only had mine for about a year and I already have more than twice as many games for it than I do the DS. Also, tons of Japanese only stuff comes out on the PSP.
@xcornmuffinx Yeah. That's the problem with the PSP is the fact that the US doesn't get a lot of Japanese made PSP games. Like Kings Field Additional 1 & 2. Maybe you could look up the Kings Field Additional games and make a video on it.
@GX2Productions I actually have Kings Field on the PS1 but not part 2. I haven't played additional. I think I mentioned Kings Field in my review of Hungry Ghosts.
@resfinalgamer Thanks man! Even if I didn't make this only Japanese games, I probably would have had most of these in my top 10 at least. I haven't even played Skyrim or Batman yet so, the top 3 probably wouldn't have changed.
@resfinalgamer I'm just trying to clear out some of my backlog before I start getting more games. Hopefully Skyrim, Batman, Assassin's Creed, and Saints Row 3 will be cheap by the time I get around to buying them.
Nice list. Its cool to see something besides the same old games everyone has mentioned. Have an awesome 2012 and I look forward to more of your videos.
@BenG76show Thanks man! I figured I'd switch it up a little bit because most people had a very "same-y" top list this year. Not that games like Skyrim and Batman don't deserve it but it's almost a given that they show up, making the lists kind of boring.
Looking forward to your vids as well! I can't wait to see what the contest winner gets in your mystery box. Hopefully they'll put up a video.

Looking forward to your vids as well! I can't wait to see what the contest winner gets in your mystery box. Hopefully they'll put up a video.
