This is exactly why this will be better than a lot of shooters out there, no a lot can compare to the emotion and the pain in this scene. This game is about so much more... That's why it's so damn good.
Its weird, the first time I played through Gears 2 I didn't care much for this scene. Tragic it may be, I went through it co-op back in 08 with some high school pals that lacked maturity.
On my own re-watching this scene as an adult in college, I teared up pretty bad. The magnitude of losing your whole family, children then life partner is just... ugh! And after all that searching, then what he had to do... I love the story so much because its relatable, realistic and replayable.
Because he hasn't seen her in years, he was so happy and full of joy and not paying attention that he lost sight of reality. Marcus made him come back to reality, so Dom so the real Maria.
Holy shit. It's like all the excruciating, overwrought, poorly-written melodrama of Eternal Sonata's infamous death scene distilled into less than a third the time allotment. So...better in that it's shorter, but possibly even more agonizing until it ends, which is fucking incredible.
What if it turns out that, that was just some random person and Maria was in the cell like right next to that one perfectly fine, but sleeping or something.

In gears 3 its revealed that the drilling wasn't why the locust came, but because the imulsion is a parasite called lambent, and was infecting the Locust. The Queen contacted Adam Fenix to find a cure but when he wasnt fast enough, the locust came and started the genocide to live on the surface
Ya' know, I find myself wondering exactly what the fuck DID they do to her to fuck her up so badly?(...the human centipede...?) no! no! brain, we swore we would never go there again!
In that moment, Maria's death took Dom's hopes and only reason for living. I mean look at this, he was nonegsistent in GoW3... One of the most epic game scenes EVER.
Now whats left to do is make Maria a multiplayer character in GoW3. Come on guys. i know u all know how awesome that would be. Maria curbstoming with high heels and popping heads with the Gnasher = EPIC!!!

When i watched Dom's and Maria's deaths i just sat there still not even breathing just there with a tear in my eye about to drop then it just rolls down. RIP Dom & Maria
I have to say, this is pretty sad. Dom spends so much time trying to find his wife after she went missing on Emergence Day, then ends up having to kill her. You should also notice that Dom imagined her coming out of the device she was in in a healthy form, but Marcus alerts Dom, bringing him to reality, where Maria is unhealthy and going to die. This was very sad, and a lot sadder compared to other game death scenes...such as Niomi's in MGS 4, which was actually really cheesy.
@JITTERdUdEepic it's really sad especially if you read the books, she didn't go missing on E-Day but actually about 4 years after it (hence him searching for her for 10 years). After their children died she would just spend day in and day out crying, her eyes would be bloodshot all day and she was on anti-depressants. Dom would always spend his days off from war to be with her but when he would leave for alot of the time she was all alone...no family...barely any friends...

Take in to context the loss of his brother Carlos in Ashpo fields and his children on E-Day, his last string of hope... Maria, who he has been searching ages for and this is how he found her, Dom really did have a significantly bad time with the locust!

Anyone notice that he has the Maria tattoo already in this vid? In Gears 3 they show him just getting the tattoo in the "Previously in Gears", but he already has the scruffy beard too when they show him getting the tat done.
@EmpyreanMAULER If you notice, Dom only has the Tattoo of the love heart with "Maria" in Gears 1 and 2 but in the books he asks Samantha Byrne to add to it. thats what you see in the "previously in Gears" video, Samantha adding the angel to the heart.

I grew up fighting alongside Marcus, Dom and the rest of Delta squad. I watched Kim die, and although surprising, didn't really strike a chord with me. I watched Anthony and Benjamin Carmine die, and while I felt bad for Benjamin, I didn't care much. Watching Tai die was spiritual and I understood his depression. But watching Maria and Dom die, however, must be the most emotional thing I've ever seen in a video game. GoW is one of the only next-gen shooters to deliver such quality.
This scene really does make your eyes water, and Gears 3 does the same. Excellent writing and Steve Jablonsky did an awesome job with the music, it fits perfectly. ive been playing gears since the first day it was released, sometimes i speak of it , my emotional response, and all i ever get is , its just a video game, sure it is a video game, but i shared this experience with our "brother to the end" , each moment counts in life , and gears has proven that.

Anyone notice that he has the Maria tattoo already in this vid? In Gears 3 they show him just getting the tattoo in the "Previously in Gears", but he already has the scruffy beard too when they show him getting the tat done.

@EmpyreanMAULER If you notice, Dom only has the Tattoo of the love heart with "Maria" in Gears 1 and 2 but in the books he asks Samantha Byrne to add to it. thats what you see in the "previously in Gears" video, Samantha adding the angel to the heart.

I grew up fighting alongside Marcus, Dom and the rest of Delta squad. I watched Kim die, and although surprising, didn't really strike a chord with me. I watched Anthony and Benjamin Carmine die, and while I felt bad for Benjamin, I didn't care much. Watching Tai die was spiritual and I understood his depression. But watching Maria and Dom die, however, must be the most emotional thing I've ever seen in a video game. GoW is one of the only next-gen shooters to deliver such quality.

This scene really does make your eyes water, and Gears 3 does the same. Excellent writing and Steve Jablonsky did an awesome job with the music, it fits perfectly. And to anyone who says "Its only a game" must be an uncreative idiot, Films, Books, Music and even games want to create an emotional response from its audience, but what would they know? aslong as Modern Warfare 3 comes out with extra perks and "NoobTube" excitement. They have the Emotional reaction of a fucking apple...

@Smellychimp91 i don't know... I was at the brink with tears in GOW 3 (Not going to reveal what happens) and GOW2, although GOW 3 was more emotional, wonderufl that it was that powerful. In MW2 (SPOILER ALERT) when roach and Ghost died, Hans Zimmer music played during the scene when Ghost and Roach were being betrayed by sheperd and set on fire made me sad, but not teary eyed. honestly, its the community that makes Modern warfare so bad, not the game itself. The game itself is not too bad...

The same goes for the ending of MW1, Please dont get me wrong, the Campaign for MW is quite entertaining and the twists are well timed. Its just some of the fans I see at my local Gamestation are just... Well, Idiots Frankly. They play no other games and say other games are shit because the "Multiplayer is shit" Buying Tshirts that have an MP40 on it and if you ever played WaW you know everyone uses it...

Imagine breakin' into a prison and seeing your niece, sister, girlfriend, mom or daughter in that condition. I saw my sister suffering from HIV and was at her side throughout.
