V.A. Hospital benefits are great!! I was young, dumb and so entered the military when I was 20. Just because I did that, I received LIFETIME SINGLE PAYER healthcare (and dental) for 4 years of being taken care of by the Army and trained on heavy equipment ops! So tell me again how single payer is bad??? I have perfect health and teeth because of it and oh yeah, when I am old, I can live in a VA nursing home plus be buried for FREE in a National Cemetery of my choosing with a 21 gun salute!!
Amen brotha!! Thanks for your service and thanks for your comment... Single payer is a good thing not a bad thing ... Corporate turds just keep denying the American people a right to health care....
If you want to take "Profit and Greed" out of the american Health Care system. Then lets move to a system like France or Japan. Where they have a combo of Private and Public Health Insurance and Health Care. Let the people decide.
Insuranc e Comoanies don't trust doctors anymore, and doctors should be the ones making the decisions. My Shrink said I needed at least 4 years of treatment, but the Insurance companies disagreed.
Like since when where Insuranc e companies experts in Psychology or medicine?
They never went to med school, don't doctors count anymore?
leftist liberal duche bag faggots take money from the taxpayers and give it all to the welfare bums, if you dont have a job, dont worry collect welfare and foodstamps and free health care, I used to love america, but i rather live in Iraq then suffer the liberalism that has taken over the US
"If the People demand it, there's momentum, they'll get HR 676....." Uh, no. Every person in the country could scream and march for it, and Lieberman, Baucus, et al, will Still do the bidding of their corporate masters and shoot it down. As long as money rules, they'll do whatever it takes to get it, and to hell with their own voters. They've proven it, and they'll continue to prove it....
Until they're voted out of office (and get their pensions for life...)
I would like to repost the comment sent to me by cemott3rd as it is a prime example of how the liberal truly reacts when confronted with a lucid, factual response...
BTW jklsr55 I am 48 years old, American born, have lived in a half a dozen countries, been to 40+ more and speak several languages, so take your self rightous, patronizing, rightwing BullShit and American Idol watching/Kool Aid drinking references and shove them up your ass!
Ladies and gentleman I give you the typical liberal..
I agree. BTW, cemott3rd's belief is left-wing rhetoric. He believes in what failed in USSR & Cuba would work in US. Profit to him is evil & a sin. He don't care for the raises & bonuses can give him if the company profits. He don't believe that the profits can help his employer get better choices in medical insurance. He don't care that profit can provide improved products & services. He don't believe that competition help the consumers in getting better prices and products. Govt is god to him.
hoorano my opinions come from my life experiences here and abroad I need no one to tell me what to think like you may. and what you say is nonsense I believe that extreme socializm (USSR, Cuba, VN N Korea) is a failed system just as I believe extreme capitalism is a failed system that we are now living. BUT what I experienced in the Netherlands or Australia worked quite well and I saw nor heard of deniles of healthcare to anyone (including foreigners) nor of any 'death panels'. Meanwhile...
I have owned and run businesses and profits are good and they can be modivating, but when EVERYTHING is left to the bottom line and it is YOUR life they are denying for THEIR profit you may find it is not you making the choice. Remember you can call your Congressman and he may respond and help you, but big corporations don't have to give a f*ck, and they have been known to let people die...many times over again.
Do you think govt can do better in heath care? Govt can deny treatment like how UK do with their NICE program, their death panel. Obama wanted something similar. W/ govt run hc, you can be covered but you can be denied treatments. In Oregon, Barbara Wagner was denied chemotherapy drugs and was offered assisted suicide. We are afraid that this can become a common practice by the feds. The company that created the drug gave it to her for free. Corporations evil? The leftist govt can be evil!
@hoorano the federal govt. has its limits in the healthcare field and they are not within in their powers to impose unconstitutional mandates that everyone have insurance. There was at least one good article written regarding that issue. Now the states on the other had that is a different story however I'd be surprised if CA ever got single payer off the ground.
The people of Massachusetts has spoken! Consider govt run health care dead. In fact public option died in the senate version of the bill thanks to the independents who said they don't want something that will lead into a 1 pay hc. God Bless the United States of America!
@hoorano, I wish I could say the same thing being out here in CA. The state senate just approved Single Payor healthcare. It will get interesting out that way over the next few years and if the political sayings are still correct, what ever CA does, the rest are sure to follow at least that was the crazed rumour back in the 20th century.
shaithis45... My heart and prayers go out to you ans CA. It must be tough living their now. The immigration problem you are facing is as debilitating as the situation in Haiti. Thank God for Massachusetts. California's only hope is to unleash the stranglehold of the Federal Govt, slash taxes and put the individual back in the drivers seat. Govt' has NEVER innovated anything. Just remember... this is AMERICA... When our back is to the wall AMERICA GETS IT DONE. And California will as well...
jklsr55, actually the cost of living is still pretty fair in northern CA. Only reason why I moved back was to take a stable job. Orig. I grew up in So Cal anyway and regardless of politics, it is still a good state. Just have to wait and see what happens but sounds as if Ahnold will veto it so no worries there. Good luck in whatever part of the U.S. you are at. Regards.
"Govt' has NEVER innovated anything."? What a completely idiotic statement! NASA never innovated anything? Our federally funded reserach hospitals never innovated anything? All the military R&D never innovated anything?!?!?! On and on it goes, so many things have been innovated by government programs it would take days to list it all!
BTW jkisr55 the individual will be driving nowhere in nothing if you take away the government regulations that provide the checks and balances that hold corporate power at bay!
My prayers to CA. I hope the voters can throw out the socialist bums out of office and allow the people to prosper in liberty. As for the 1 payer hc, I hope that the people will cry for repeal of the ruling before it's enacted.
@hoorano, a start is getting rid of the incumbents and replacing them with people with non-politicla degrees. Real people with real college degrees: Business, Architecutre...etc. etc. Political science degree elected officials are a fucking joke and I'm very suspicious of career politicians as well and some do have to go. Regardless CA is still a beautiful state scenic wise and it will always stay that way. Living here, well depends on where and what you can do.
hoorano- Even if the Mass GOP win is a true reflection of the majority rejecting "govt run health care" (excluding Medicare of course, and this is all debatable) why would you celebrate the unchecked rule of for profit only, corporate insurance company run healthcare? Ask any decent doctor, PA or nurse and they will tell you the dangers of this situation. Can you say bled to death? Sure ya can.....
I'd rather have the private hc profit and receive good quality products and services. Would you rather receive care at a state hc facility? Their facilities are dirtier an down right depressing. Remember, just because the govt promises medical insurance or hc, it doesn't mean everyone will receive the needed hc. Death panels will eventually come to life and ration to those who are worthwhile or cheaper to treat.
The best healthcare in this country if not the world is at our goverment backed university research hospitals such as John Hopkins. Meanwhile I was never denied healthcare in Australia nor the Netherlands nor did I hear of anyone ever being denied life saving drugs or procedures (maybe you had to wait for other procedures occasionally) like I hear they are doing here all the time!
We are also the only nation who does not tax our citizens 50-60 percent of their income. With all these other country's and their amazing medical entity's why do people from around the world continue to flock to the United States for medical care?? If we would truly allow the market to dictate costs and get the gov't the hell out of the way prices would fall. Let me ask you this... What are the UNINSURED doing to provide insurance for THEMSELVES? Why do I have to get an extra job when they wont?
@jklsr55, those questions are being asked by me as well as CA is looking to push their own Single Payor system, however if a portion of the state isn't working then Single Payor is fucked and this now drives the point home to people that are illegal in CA. Single Payor won't work if illegals are allowed to take part. Unemployment needs to really be solved and permanently before any major changes in health care take affect and raising the payroll tax on employers will make it even worse.
Moore got rich, fat, and famous through capitalists system. NOTICE: not right, nor left wing will NEVER bring up the free market reform. Until people wake up, and get rid of all these lobbyists, and special interest out of Washinton. The rights loves corporate interests, lobbyists to the point where there is no market competition, and the leftists love socialize/communists healthcare. Choose one.
It's strange but "socialize/communists healthcare" seems to function very well in all of the rest of the industrialized world, and they don't seem any less free than we are, actually quite the contrary.
It maybe so, But what makes you think it will function here? This country was never socialize in any form. Most of population would never want such government control.
Right now Wall St. and greedy corporate CEOs and bueracrates control the healthcare system and if denying you treatment means you die, so they can turn more of a profit, so what! Does most of the American population like them in control?
Ahhh the great lie that the post modern American right keeps esposing, but this of course is nonsense. From 1933-1968 the Dem left held power and many things were 'socailized': the roads, the schools, medical research, aquaducts levees & dams, the power grid, public transportation. airports, sports arenas, Social Security. Medicare/caid on and on it goes.
Are you SERIOUS? The majority of the programs you just listed are proving to be miserable failures. Cemott3rd... quit drinking the Kool Aid. Or better yet take Michael Moore and move to France. His movie Sicko should have debuted on the Cartoon Network. If you truly believe Corporate America is knowing killing people for more money you also must believe GBush and DCheney went to war so they could line their pockets with oil money. Go watch American Idol and leave these grown up matters to us...
jklsr55, Social Security and Mecicare have failed? Why then doesn't the GOP run on the platform of dismantling these 'failed programs' then? Why? POLITICAL SUICIDE! If you had been paying attention the last 30 years you might know that US corporations care about one thing, PROFIT and little else. BTW Darth Cheney and his padawan did go to Iraq for the oil (and other military and political reasons) that is why one of the first things we tried to do was privatize the oil, but the Iraqies said NO!!
BTW jklsr55 I am 48 years old, American born, have lived in a half a dozen countries, been to 40+ more and speak several languages, so take your self rightous, patronizing, rightwing BullShit and American Idol watching/Kool Aid drinking references and shove them up your ass!
I understand. But most of population would rather have free market system. But politicans both right, and left have corporate lobbyist backing them up. If people can vote in a leader that will ban all corporate lobbyist, Wahington can actually have a free market reform expanding more competition creating more jobs, and lowering cost of health insurance. Government only inforce control, by imposing more laws, and taxes creating job loss, and there for lack of tax revenue to cover uninsured.
That is not a free market system I desire, justice for all who can afford it...or healthcare=life for only those who can afford it... at the prices the hospitals are charging most of us would be dead pretty quick!
Only if you want to return to the ways of the 19th century. Try looking up the Gilded Age, that is the direction that the "free trade fanatics"* with their corporate lobbyists have been leading us. We could be a 2nd world country (i.e. first world infrastructure in many places but 3rd world living standards for more and more of the working people) in no time if we continue down the path the neo-cons have been pied piping us down the last 30 years. *This is a term the PM of Japan used recently.
That is why tea party demonstrators exsist. Corporate rules both right, and left.
Right loves to be into coporate interists, because of political campaign contributions from coporates, and left loves corporate interest as well cause, corporate interest can actually inforce government control upon people. Both parties are corrupted.american are angry because people want compitition on all playing level.
Actually, the 1st world referred to industrialized, democratic or nominally so, 2nd world was communist organized government with solid industry, 3rd world was underdeveloped, non-industrial countries. Look at how much of our manufacturing and industrialized base has been moved out of America and tell us we're still an industrial nation.
20+ years ago that was the correct definition, but times have changed and through my own extensive global travels, I (and even those who 'define' such things) have changed these definitions. A 2nd world nation is now generally considered an up and coming nation such as Brazil or Thailand, and on the other hand I define a 4th world nation as one that has had no or negitive growth (and lacking the most basic infrastructure such as paved roads) in recent years such as Zaire or Haiti.
Meanwhile we are still the largest export nation in the world but if we continue our inane Reaganomic policies we are in alot of trouble. As it stands since China garnered 1st nation trading status with us (a crime against all US workers perpetrated by Clinton and a Rep Congress) we have lost 50,000 manufacturing jobs a DAY!
This is why we have laws, and constitution. If police did not do their jobs, there will be lawsuits, and police force termination, because the violation of the constitution, and laws. Same applyies to politicans.
Remember the free market system can be great when it comes to providing most goods and services (and even then it must have it's checks and balances, to say stop outsourcing to labor and enviromentally abusive countries) but in some cases when we are talking about your life, personal or national security, the city burning down, dealing with disasters, etc. this is when profit can cause serious harm to the equation.
Well the numbers seem to say that most of the US pop. wants a public option, and giving younger, healthier people the option to buy/pay into the Medicare/caid system (a system that the vast majority of us end up on at the end -and at the most costly part- of our lives) would only be benificial to all of us....or we could just give it to the big insurance companies for their profiteering CEOs and investors. Meanwhile you are right, the corporate lobbying must be stopped or@least equallycountered.
@macdogq i dont know why conservatives dont consider the isreali model, where the free market and government programs reinforce each other, and contains fundamental roots in charity and personal responsiblity that advocates preventive care.we trust them enough regarding terrorism advise.there's no harm in looking in to some of thier solutions and see what could be worked with.
@dignerds Because there is too much influence from corportate interest. Politicans collect on political campaign funds from corporate interest, and unfortunetly, this will not change.
SO, you're saying it is Obama's PLAN to bankrupt America... that's his plan? So, he hates the country? He hates all of us and wants to ruin our country? Wrong! You want Obama to fail, which means you want this country to fail. The question is, how do we stop YOU?
Put the system in the hands of the people? That's an oxy moron! You mean in the hands of the government. And 47,000,000 uninsurred. That's a bad choice crisis! I know too many people that would rather have money for pot and cigarettes than healthcare. Yah, and MEDICAID, is a form of government healthcare, dumbasses!
911 There is new petition out by bold progressives that needs signatures. It has 120,000 and they want 150,000. I have the link to it in the comment section of my profile. Sign it and then pass it on!
Good News! AARP & the American Medical Assn have just announced that they're supporting the House health reform bill.
Medicaid was bought from our legislators by private companies who increase their profits by allowing as little treatment as possible to be received, by some of the most helpless individuals in our country.
Universal treatment access is a basic human right. Our system is not just broken, it is rotten to the core. Individual legislators need to account for every dime they have received from the "health insurance" industry. They have sold their votes to them. They are not representing us, anymore, they are functioning as insurance industry operatives.
If you ever get really sick, and have insurance you're assigned a insurance healthcare person who is supposed to get you kicked out of the plan, whether calling your employer and threatening to go up on rates for the whole company or by technicalities with pre-existing conditions related to typos or the like; CEOs admit this is standard practice under oath before Congress.
Hate to burst everyone's bubble...but we already have free health care for everyone in the US and it's probably higher quality than the new bill would create.
A number of my students, over the years, have had serious health problems and no insurance. They all went to public health hospitals and were taken pretty good care of...some of the tools and medicines were actually cutting-edge...donated by companies. No need to destroy the current system or punish the 85% who are happy.
How do they pay their doctors, nurses, administrators and various staff?
You may be able to go to a hospital emergency room and get "free" medical care. They in turn, raise their rates based upon projected "loses" associating from unreimbursed emergency care. Insurers, in turn, raise their premiums. The insured are already paying for the uninsured.
Why should one have to wait until they are sick enough to wind up in a hospital to get health care?
The Public Health System is funded through taxes at the Federal level. There are a couple of PHS hospitals in every major city and at least one in most cities. They also have a large number of clinics for preventative medicine.
If we really wanted to make health care more affordable than it already is, we would lift restrictions on insurers so they could compete in every state, tackle tort reform (good luck with dealing with the huge attorney lobby), and do a voucher system (simple and cheap)
How come there are so many people going without health care if resources were already so abundant? These hospitals, and the various free clinics throughout our country, don't have a fraction of the necessary capacity. Ever been to Wise, VA?
Tort reform would only amount to a tiny incremental difference. Medical malpractice liability amounts to less than 2% of health care costs.
Vouchers? Who gets them? How much will they get? How much (income limits)? How/when will they be disbursed? etc...
The only way I'd even remotely be in favor of lifting state restrictions, is if the anti-trust exclusion removed. All lifting the state limits will accomplish, would be to create a national oligopoly as opposed the the state/regional hold the top health insurers enjoy. Nice little benefit to them as well, would be the ability to relocate to a state with low regulations. For example: move from California (high reg) to Wyoming (low) and sell to CA residents, while enjoying the lower regs of WY.
True...I may be spoiled because my state has apparently done it right. For a test, I input for quotes on health care insurance this last week. Even at my age I received back quotes and annoying phone calls from 58 companies...starting at catastrophic at under $160/month. Hardly an oligopoly situation. Even I was shocked at the ability of the market to produce competition in this area. Some states do have it wrong and I agree on reviewing anti-trust issues to keep compeition lively.
Website like "ehealthinsurance" perhaps? I'm not doubting that you received a number of low ball quotes from a variety of sources. There are somewhere around 1500 different companies that provide health insurance in this country. Out of those, there are 2 companies (Wellpoint & UnitedHealth) that represent 36% of the market. Every state in this country ranges from over 40% to over 80% of their respective markets dominated by a single insurer. If that's not an oligopoly, I don't know what is.
I'm not sure I'd call 36% on Oligopoly. You are right about some states...Mass for example where the gov't has put one firm in charge and won't allow competition. Notice that's hardly reflective of a free market. Now if you want to see true monopoly and oligopoly type conditions with the poor service and high prices along with lack of innovation...let gov't take over the industry in every state.
It will be a disaster then...I like cafeteria style markets myself.
I have several petitions where you can demand single payer health care from COMPANIES that give money to conservatives in both parties. Sign them and get as many people as you can to sign them. Go to the following web site which I have encoded backwards take each letter from right to left and then create the address.
You're not real big on all this first amendment stuff are you? I thought most companies gave health care choices to their employees...what good would it do to restrict the employee's option? I don't get the logic.
America-bashing? What a dumb fuck you are. You're probably one of those bush supporters, who called peace advocates "america haters" at the begining of the war on ERROR. So I'm going to do the same: if you don't support Obama, that means you hate america and side with the terrorist. What a moron you are. I doubt you have more than a high school education.
Socialist propaganda. Life is hard, sometimes extremely hard, always ending in death. Life is often not fair. Does not mean you place responsibility elsewhere, and steal from others to pay your own bills. ObamaFare will bankrupt USA. Is that what Anti-American Socialists want? Maybe so.
forwardmover Where do you get this balderdash? Taxation by representation is NOT STEALING . Do you consider that someone mails their letters and you choose to drive them to your recipients personally "stealing" because you pay taxes that build Post Offices?
Do you consider that someone drives the Interstate and you take back country roads "stealing" because you pay taxes that build highways?
Even God Himself did not condemn taxation, Jesus said "Render Unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.."
problem is that Liberals go to far. you've got the commie loons like Weiner and the ACORN flakes. Government is way too big and we have too many fat flakes living off the dole. You might have to still pay your way.
I know a disabled railroad worker paying >$17k a year for an HMO option. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all HUMANS are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable RIGHTS, that among these are LIFE, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness..." declaration of independence- from Corporate Cannibals!
single payer is the ONLY option. i don't want to die in order to save a CEO a fraction of a percent on their daily profits. our inalienable right to life dictates a health care system that isn't weighted toward making us more sick and or outright dead!
Exactly, single payer system. That is what this country needs and needed for decades. Every civlized intelligent nation provides this for its own people. We are the only nation on earth, that uses profit making insurance companies, dealing with humans life and health. How is this even legal?
I am originally from Germany and now I work in the US as a Nurse and I shocked, what the system does to peoples life. Its shame, people are more concerned about the bill then their health result. SINGLE PAYER NOW
Hate to break it to ya, Punkfish79 - we're going to keep pushing until single-payer is reality. Anything less is unacceptable and we can no longer afford a broken status quo.
When you say that America is not ready for this, which America do you mean? The America of the HMOs, pharmaceuticals and others misinformed or with financia ties to these groups? Or the 48 million Americans that do not have health insurance? If you think that the conservatives are going to pull off a 1994 again, you're in for a big surprise. Passing Single-Payer healthcare will be a multi-battle war. You may be winning the first battles, but, in the end, we'll pass it!
Damn you.. you religous right wing oligarchists who wouldn't dare think on your own accord. Let me ask you some questions! Who would Jesus deny healthcare too based on their socioeconimc status? Who would Jesus Bomb? What would Jesus think about the wealthiest nation in the world allowing 18,000(6 9/11's annually) American's to die each year because of a lack of health insurance(according to the American Medical Institute). Why do you support murdering innocence overseas while allowing us to die?
Your numbers are a little out of date Kyndeskid. Source for the following is Urban Institute Research of Record non-partisan economic and social policy.
2002, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) estimated that 18,000 Americans died in 2000 because they were uninsured. Since then, the number of uninsured has grown. Based on the IOM's Census Bureau estimates of insurance coverage, 137,000 people died from 2000 through 2006 because they lacked health insurance, including 22,000 people in 2006.
Canada does have better economic outlook, thanks to natural resources and other factors? also, you guys are getting more Asians, which is good? USA ???
I live in Toronto. A very big and busy city. I would not trade our health care system for anything. My wife's mother had breast cancer. It was all removed, 15 years cancer free, didn't cost a penny. Nobody here waits over an hour for any treatment. The commercials they are showing in America are total BS. The insurance companies are trying to scare you out of a government run system. Do not listen to these lies Look at the facts. Canadians/Europeans live longer and healthier lives than Americans
Glad to hear about defeating the cancer. Hearing lots of positive news about Canada economy, especially around natural resources. Its not the insurers doing the scaring. many of our leaders are nuts. USA is a nutty country, with lots of fat flakes. Look at Michael Moore. an we are going bankrupt. Can I become a citizen :-)
forwardmover And USA is not? The difference is that UK & Canadian citizens are not bankrupt due to medical bills, however according to AARP: "1.85 Million Americans Go Bankrupt Due To Medical Bills In One Year"
You need to watch less MSLSD. Actually, per American Bankruptcy Insitute, there were 1,117,771 TOTAL filings in 2008. Lots of propagandists out there, and many people willing to pass it along. Harvard study says 50-60% B due to illness. so, why do so few biu disability income insurance?
forwardmover So ABI and AARP and Harvard study agree there are over a million of medical bankruptcies in America, so what is the discrepancy? There are NO medical bankruptcies in Canada, NONE.
Most countries that have a national health care system also does not have a military such as ours. If you say fine get rid of the military, great then we need to start drilling our own oil...Last time I checked China Owns us / we are already bankrupt...
I am terrified that we have a federal government that does not protect out borders and cannot balance its budget. Maxine Waters. Dennis K. these people show up and you know its loony hour. Michael Moore = health hazard. What a pig.
Single Payer Health Care is the moral thing to do in America. As far as people continuously getting price gouged, ripped off, and being short changed by all these predatory for profit private health insurance companies goes. There's this saying. Evil only prevails when good folks do nothing. We need to fight for health care reform that would cover everyone. Cradle to grave. Regardless, of color, creed, religious faith, political views, and economic status. Health care's a right goddammit.
Today, the big money is being made in government. Unions most workers are in government jobs. Govt in bed with unions, to sat in office. While everything moves to other countries. Washington = CORRUPT!
When they realize they cannot get the massive plan into place now, they will scale it back (hr676) and wait until they think you are not watching. They are very willing to make the incremental moves until all the sheep are fooled. Then they have full control... Why does a mandatory "board" member have to be Representatives of labor unions like SEIU (Dem thugs)? To help delay critical lifesaving medical treatments causing premature deaths to non union citizens?
Stop watching Fox news and wake up. Taking insurance companies out of the equation will only improve care, especially for old people, kids, and 48 million uninsured. No other country in the world does health care the way we do because we are doing it wrong!
Today you go to the doctor, if you're diagnosed with a serious illness you discuss treatment with your doctor and you decide how to move forward. Under the Obama plan you stand in front of a Board that will tell YOU how to be treated. On this board will be bureaucrats like a labor union rep (SEIU thug) why would you want to give your life away? You are still free! Snap out of it.
What, is "the system" going to hold a gun to doctors heads and force them to work for peanuts? Where is the money going to come from to pay for everyone???? The reason the system is so "broken" at the moment is because of too much govt interference. So you think the answer is MORE govt???????
It all seems great until you have to answer the question.....WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM???????
If you had been paying attention, you would have seen that we already spend twice as much as we need to have a first-rate system that cares for everyone. To reduce the exorbitant costs, you have to cut somewhere. Rather than penalize citizens or medical providers, a universal not-for-profit system would instead eliminate private insurance leeches and allow for better drug pricing through negotiations. Simplify government, simplify health care access, eliminate profiteering. Try reading HR676.
The government is only the problem when Republicans run it. We need to focus on well-run government. You have to believe in it to accomplish that goal. If you hire quality people, you get quality services.
We also need a percentage of every federal dollar to go to federal spending cops - armies of accountants to ensure money is properly spent.
Obama wants to create a "death panel" that would deny care to the neediest Americans. You will have to stand in front of Obama's 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care. The Democratic health care bills would encourage euthanasia. The reform plans will lead to rationing, or the government determining which medical procedures a patient can have.
I'm a US citizen living in Germany's universal healthcare system. It's good. I can afford it where as if I was living in the US I could not. I really miss the US but if I were to move back; I would be putting my health and that of my family at risk. MY brother has diabetes. He had no insurance but even though he is insured now out of pockent costs are too expensive. He modifies his treatment on whether he can afford it.
Perhaps most importantly, the Board would assess the effectiveness and costs of various treatments.
governor of New York Betsy McCaughey said that the Houses proposed health care bill contained a provision that would institute mandatory counseling sessions telling seniors how "to do whats in societys best interest and cut your life short." Rationing will be creeping death for the elderly.
Please do not insult people lifeline, I have had many surgeries in the Canadian system and my son would not even be here were it not for the excellent care he got at Children's Hospital in Ottawa. They saved his life and I would have gone bankrupt at home or not been able to pay for his VERY expensive years of care at home at ALL. So when you talk of people dying for lack of care, well....I look south of the border to see most of that sad goings on.
explain how Americans privacy will be protected if e-mails are forwarded to the White House as requested.
I am not aware of any precedent for a President asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure political speech that is deemed fishy or otherwise inimical to the White Houses political interests
I can only imagine the level of justifiable outrage had your predecessor asked Americans to forward emails critical of his policies to the White House.
Actually, bg, if Canadians come to the U.S. for health care to jump the line the Canadian government PAYS FOR IT. Also do you know how many American's come up here for healthcare too that you don't hear about? I am one of them. I moved to Canada due to not being able to afford care in the U.S. for myself and my son.
Scare tactics in the U.S. are mostly lies. I proved it to myself when I moved here. People are not jamming the border to get into the U.S. system! Most Canadians do not want that.
In 1965 Liberal Democrat LBJ pushed for and signed into law the unconstitutional Medicaid & Medicare programs. These programs have directly led to the free market medicine system to be destabilized & made greatly more expensive for everyone.
Prior to the programs, medical insurance costs were greatly lower. It also led to the medical lawsuit lottery that we have. Before the programs any blue collar working person could easily afford the insurance. The documented history is there to prove it.
Hate me all you want but the facts and history prove me beyond dispute, correct. As a matter of fact I hope that you get so mad at me that you go research the history.
There is plenty of documentation online that deals with insurance costs over that last 80 years. Please, go research it. I want you to go see for yourself.
LBJ doomed this country. What he did sounds wonderful, it sounds like a utopia but the sad fact is that there is no utopia to be had. Life is simply not free.
The economies of countries that adopted universal health care have been in the dumper for a long time and you have to understand that were it has been moderately successful are not culturally mixed countries.
America being very culturally mixed is a completely unsuitable place for socialism because we have a high rate of people who have no work ethic. That is just the sad fact.
In any event if this is issue is pushed, remember who told you that the union would split within a decade after it.
Countries with single payer have bad economies? Only the South American ones, and that can hardly be blamed on health care.
Americans have no work ethic? Americans work more hours per week than people in any industrialized country - even Japan - by 20%.
If you're going to bash something, at least do some research. The baseless non-arguments conservatives are throwing in front of reform are not going to look good in history books.
Sorry to burst your bubble but I know full well of what I'm talking about. I didn't use a blanket statement of "Americans". I said "we have a high rate of people that have no work ethic".
And guess what, the statistics prove me right when you look at the welfare rolls & illegal immigration. The welfare rolls are disproportionate ethnic minorities. And don't give me nonsense about racism please. We have a cultural problem that other countries don't have & it won't be resolved by name calling.
kmg, they are not going to research it. A much easier way for these libs is to listen to all the crap from dkos/huffpo/mmatters/moveon. Well, let me not forget the daily show which is the #1 trusted news source.
Do some research before you start bashing. kmg is correct. Every sector of the economy where gov't gets involved (i.e. tries to provide services) ends up in the toilet. Housing is the best example now (Fannie and Freddie). Auto industry is going to be next, maybe with the exception of Ford.
Roads: I-35 W bridge in Minnesota - shows how well our excise taxes are spent. BTW private contractors are the one actually performing the work.
Military: since I was on active duty I know very well how military works and believe me it's not efficient in any way. note: providing for national defense is in the constitution.
The rest: private sector is not in the business of legislation or law enforcement.
The difference is: gov't is there to govern and not provide goods and services.
Minimum wage SHOULD be abolished. It is a form of price control. Free market works extremely well in determining prices of goods and services.
Government never works better than private sector because it has no motivation to do so. Just read some history on socialist/communist countries and their command economies.

Care is ALREADY rationed via insurance companies . . .their reason for existance is to make a PROFIT, and the way to make a profit is to DENY or CONTRIBUTE AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE for coverage. The whole idea is laughable. A single-payer system wouldn't be perfect (no system is) but it's be a huge improvement. Yes there would be some rationing but it'd be much more efficient than the current system which simply hurts people who aren't rich.
One of the only good things about living in California is that in the future we may be able to gloat about our Single Payer system to the rest of this dumb unhealthy country. (Assuming we elect a governor who won't veto it)
Hopefully I can do this a few years from now:
*Reads story about some person getting denied coverage*
How's Mass doing with their single payer system? I think they are already $800 million in the hole after 2-3 years. No to mention Boston Medical Center is suing the state for reimbursing only 64% of the costs. I wonder how deep they would be if they actually paid the costs.
Are you braindead? Massachusetts doesn't have a single payer system. All they have is a mandate that FORCES you to buy private insurance. Why are you so stupid?
Actually that's not all they have. Why don't YOU do your research before calling anyone stupid. BTW how are they doing on cost control? Let me guess, more gov't control would solve the problem?
I have a hunch hell is filled with the screams of those, convinced that they will spend eternity with Jesus. I'm not here to deny you your faith, just to ask you don't stand in the choices others have in this mortal world today
JoeBlow-Dems could never achieve the corruption of the Fright-Wing ReFlubLieRant Party who made the entire world go broke; messed up Katrina;outed a CIA agent;conspired to coverup the Cheney shooting;genocided 1,300,000 innocents in an int'l illegal invasion; destroyed our Constitution by legalizing torture, indefinite prison, terms, no charge for imprisonment, no trials, no legal defense; gave free money to CEOs; create Fascist mass media & a nazi SS of their own. when the senate starts talking about making health insurance mandatory of face $1000 fines, then we are now dealing with a govt. that has lost its credibility. at last check human beings were not automobiles but individuals.
health care in america is run by drug companies and insurance companies.
drug companies block americans from getting affordable drugs.
insurance companies dedicate whole departments to the denial of all claims. including those who are covered.
insurance companies are strangling the american people, their rights, and their freedoms. and all they do is create billions of dollars of red tape and paperwork. their biggest fear is losing millions of customers. gee i wonder why.

If you want to take "Profit and Greed" out of the american Health Care system. Then lets move to a system like France or Japan. Where they have a combo of Private and Public Health Insurance and Health Care. Let the people decide.

It seems to me the money spent on them gets lost.

Well I know about Health Insurance Companies. I was treated for bipolar disorder, and for awhile my Insurance paid for it.
My psychologist knew what was best for me, butn the Insurance company said mental ill health is not a real illness and dropped me.
I paid thousands into the system, and they drop me.
Its like going to McDonalds for a cheesburger as a paying customer, and they turn around saying I'm no longer welcome as a customer.
I paid for the burger give it

Insuranc e Comoanies don't trust doctors anymore, and doctors should be the ones making the decisions. My Shrink said I needed at least 4 years of treatment, but the Insurance companies disagreed.
Like since when where Insuranc e companies experts in Psychology or medicine?
They never went to med school, don't doctors count anymore?

Now I am the Health Insurance comopanies arch enemy.
They rip people off. I say if you pay into it, you deserve treatment.
So now I use a Health Savings Account.
Health Insurance companies try not to cooperate with most HSA's because it takes the profit and decisions out of their hands.
If I could count all the heated arguments I had over the phone, I'd be a millionhairre by now.

He don't care for the raises & bonuses can give him if the company profits. He don't believe that the profits can help his employer get better choices in medical insurance. He don't care that profit can provide improved products & services. He don't believe that competition help the consumers in getting better prices and products. Govt is god to him.

cemott3rd 1 year ago

@hoorano, I wish I could say the same thing being out here in CA. The state senate just approved Single Payor healthcare. hoorano- Even if the Mass GOP win is a true reflection of the majority rejecting "govt run health care" (excluding Medicare of course, and this is all debatable) why would you celebrate the unchecked rule of for profit only, corporate insurance company run healthcare? Ask any decent doctor, PA or nurse and they will tell you the dangers of this situation. Can you say bled to death? Sure ya can.....
cemott3rd 2 years ago

Why do I have to get an extra job when they wont?
jklsr55 2 years ago
@jklsr55, those questions are being asked by me as well as CA is looking to push their own Single Payor system, however if a portion of the state isn't working then Single Payor is fucked and this now drives the point home to people that are illegal in CA. Single Payor won't work if illegals are allowed to take part. Unemployment needs to really be solved and permanently before any major changes in health care take affect and raising the payroll tax on employers will make it even worse.

Ahhh the great lie that the post modern American right keeps esposing, but this of course is nonsense. Medicare/caid on and on it goes.

Actually, the 1st world referred to industrialized, democratic or nominally so, 2nd world was communist organized government with solid industry, 3rd world was underdeveloped, non-industrial countries. Look at how much of our manufacturing and industrialized base has been moved out of America and tell us we're still an industrial nation.
mexcurmudgeon 2 years ago
20+ years ago that was the correct definition, but times have changed and through my own extensive global travels, I (and even those who 'define' such things) have changed these definitions. A 2nd world nation is now generally considered an up and coming nation such as Brazil or Thailand, and on the other hand I define a 4th world nation as one that has had no or negitive growth (and lacking the most basic infrastructure such as paved roads) in recent years such as Zaire or Haiti.

Meanwhile we are still the largest export nation in the world but if we continue our inane Reaganomic policies we are in alot of trouble. Remember the free market system can be great when it comes to providing most goods and services (and even then it must have it's checks and balances, to say stop outsourcing to labor and enviromentally abusive countries) but in some cases when we are talking about your life, personal or national security, the city burning down, dealing with disasters, etc. this is when profit can cause serious harm to the equation.
cemott3rd 2 years ago
Well the numbers seem to say that most of the US pop. wants a public option, and giving younger, healthier people the option to buy/pay into the Medicare/caid system (a system that the vast majority of us end up on at the end -and at the most costly part- of our lives) would only be benificial to all of us....or we could just give it to the big insurance companies for their profiteering CEOs and investors. Meanwhile you are right, the corporate lobbying must be stopped or@least equallycountered.

No need to destroy the current system or punish the 85% who are happy.
professorofliberty 2 years ago
How many of these hospitals exist in the US?
How do they pay their doctors, nurses, administrators and various staff?
You may be able to go to a hospital emergency room and get "free" medical care. They in turn, raise their rates based upon projected "loses" associating from unreimbursed emergency care. Insurers, in turn, raise their premiums. The insured are already paying for the uninsured.
Why should one have to wait until they are sick enough to wind up in a hospital to get health care?
trelane227 2 years ago
The Public Health System is funded through taxes at the Federal level. There are a couple of PHS hospitals in every major city and at least one in most cities. They also have a large number of clinics for preventative medicine.
If we really wanted to make health care more affordable than it already is, we would lift restrictions on insurers so they could compete in every state, tackle tort reform (good luck with dealing with the huge attorney lobby), and do a voucher system (simple and cheap)
professorofliberty 2 years ago
How come there are so many people going without health care if resources were already so abundant? These hospitals, and the various free clinics throughout our country, don't have a fraction of the necessary capacity. Ever been to Wise, VA?
Tort reform would only amount to a tiny incremental difference. Medical malpractice liability amounts to less than 2% of health care costs.
Vouchers? Who gets them? How much will they get? How much (income limits)? How/when will they be disbursed? etc...
trelane227 2 years ago
The only way I'd even remotely be in favor of lifting state restrictions, is if the anti-trust exclusion removed. All lifting the state limits will accomplish, would be to create a national oligopoly as opposed the the state/regional hold the top health insurers enjoy. Nice little benefit to them as well, would be the ability to relocate to a state with low regulations. For example: move from California (high reg) to Wyoming (low) and sell to CA residents, while enjoying the lower regs of WY.
trelane227 2 years ago
True...I may be spoiled because my state has apparently done it right. For a test, I input for quotes on health care insurance this last week. Even at my age I received back quotes and annoying phone calls from 58 companies...starting at catastrophic at under $160/month. Hardly an oligopoly situation. Even I was shocked at the ability of the market to produce competition in this area. Some states do have it wrong and I agree on reviewing anti-trust issues to keep compeition lively.
professorofliberty 2 years ago
Website like "ehealthinsurance" perhaps? I'm not doubting that you received a number of low ball quotes from a variety of sources. There are somewhere around 1500 different companies that provide health insurance in this country. Out of those, there are 2 companies (Wellpoint & UnitedHealth) that represent 36% of the market. Every state in this country ranges from over 40% to over 80% of their respective markets dominated by a single insurer. If that's not an oligopoly, I don't know what is.
trelane227 2 years ago

Even God Himself did not condemn taxation, Jesus said "Render Unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.."

Or the 48 million Americans that do not have health insurance? If you think that the conservatives are going to pull off a 1994 again, you're in for a big surprise.

It all seems great until you have to answer the question.....WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM???????
sambking 2 years ago

He modifies his treatment on whether he can afford it.
tjfgermany58123 2 years ago
Perhaps most importantly, the Board would assess the effectiveness and costs of various treatments.
governor of New York Betsy McCaughey said that the Houses proposed health care bill contained a provision that would institute mandatory counseling sessions telling seniors how "to do whats in societys best interest and cut your life short." Rationing will be creeping death for the elderly.

Please do not insult people lifeline, I have had many surgeries in the Canadian system and my son would not even be here were it not for the excellent care he got at Children's Hospital in Ottawa. explain how Americans privacy will be protected if e-mails are forwarded to the White House as requested.

LBJ doomed this country. What he did sounds wonderful, it sounds like a utopia but the sad fact is that there is no utopia to be had. Life is simply not free.

THINK ABOUT IT
thesparitan 2 years ago
The economies of countries that adopted universal health care have been in the dumper for a long time and you have to understand that were it has been moderately successful are not culturally mixed countries.
America being very culturally mixed is a completely unsuitable place for socialism because we have a high rate of people who have no work ethic. That is just the sad fact.
In any event if this is issue is pushed, remember who told you that the union would split within a decade after it.
kmg501 2 years ago
stop talking you have no idea what you are talking about im done with you people
thesparitan 2 years ago
Countries with single payer have bad economies? Only the South American ones, and that can hardly be blamed on health care.
Americans have no work ethic? Americans work more hours per week than people in any industrialized country - even Japan - by 20%.
If you're going to bash something, at least do some research. The baseless non-arguments conservatives are throwing in front of reform are not going to look good in history books.
avooslwuthoqquan 2 years ago
Sorry to burst your bubble but I know full well of what I'm talking about. I didn't use a blanket statement of "Americans". I said "we have a high rate of people that have no work ethic".
And guess what, the statistics prove me right when you look at the welfare rolls & illegal immigration. The welfare rolls are disproportionate ethnic minorities. And don't give me nonsense about racism please. We have a cultural problem that other countries don't have & it won't be resolved by name calling.

Do some research before you start bashing. kmg is correct. Every sector of the economy where gov't gets involved (i.e. tries to provide services) ends up in the toilet. Housing is the best example now (Fannie and Freddie). Auto industry is going to be next, maybe with the exception of Ford.
bgvworldwide 2 years ago
Every sector, huh? Ok, let's see how committed to this premise you are.
Roads: should be privatized y/n?
The military: Privatized y/n?
Police: Privatized y/n?
Anti-trust laws should be abolished y/n?
All environmental regulations, workplace regulations, the civil rights act, minimum wage, should be abolished y/n?
So what is it? Are you really just a batshit religious anarcho-capitalist or does government work better than the market sometimes?
avooslwuthoqquan 2 years ago
Roads: I-35 W bridge in Minnesota - shows how well our excise taxes are spent. BTW private contractors are the one actually performing the work.
Military: since I was on active duty I know very well how military works and believe me it's not efficient in any way. note: providing for national defense is in the constitution.
The rest: private sector is not in the business of legislation or law enforcement.
The difference is: gov't is there to govern and not provide goods and services.
bgvworldwide 2 years ago
