In 1946, Tsitsanis returned to Athens and began recording many of his own compositions that made famous many of the singers that worked with him, such as Sotiria Bello,marika ninou and Prodromos Tsaousakis

Ninou was born on the ship Evangelistria which brought her mother, her sisters and her brother to Athens from Smyrna. They just had escaped the great slaughter of the "Minor Asia Catastrophe".

Unfortunately one of the very few scenes of a true rebetiko.

It's a crying shame that this remains the earliest footage of rebetika. During the previous 20 years, hundreds of films were made in and about life in Athens and no-one thought to film Vamvakaris, Stellakis, Kavouras, Dalkas, Nouros, Rita Abatzi, Papaiouannou etc. etc. We must however be thankful for this precious film. Thanks for posting.
