I'm not impressed with the original but I do like Reba's. She just has so much emotion in her voice.. Dave Loggins' version is flat. Just another opinion.
@cuongoff I love both versions. I do wish Reba would re-record some of her older songs because her voice has changed so much as she has matured. I love the young voice but am also with you on being partial to the deeper tone Reba has now. As one reviewer said, Reba has gone from cowgirl howl to full on momma growl LOL.
The beauty of having a voice like Reba, is that if you feel it from the heart, you can make it work for you, and so she did. I love this song, and yes I like The way Dave Loggins sings it, who doesn't?. Reba offers the song for womans to also enjoy singing such awsome song and make it work for the gender. I think I feel the same emotion when I listen either version of it, so two thumbs up for Reba.
Do you see Reba doing Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Life By The Drop" Could she sing the notes, technically? Yes most certainly, would it kill the the song,,,oh yeah. The trick is when doing covers to pick what works. Nanci Griffith Cover's Bob Dylans song " Spanish Boots Of Leather" not " All along the Watchtower" Anyway its all a matter of taste, so if you are a diehard Reba fan or whover, you will think they can do no wrong.
Its all a matter of taste and totally subjective....not black in white...in my opinion Dave Loggins does the best version male or female. I still believe some songs are better by either a male or female...some songs just don't go over well song by a man and some songs don't sound good by a female vocalist. Reba is a professional, great singer, thats why she is succesful, but this is not , in my opinion in her range or feeling...
@fundyqueen So glad you put "In your opinion" as we all are entitled to one. IMHO this song is perfect for Rebas range, you do realize Reba has quite a wide vocal range, and as she is the best interpreter of a song out there it is also in her "feeling". You prefer this song done by a man end of.
@fundyqueen May I point out like Reba's range is WIDE. She posses a contralto range, from the G below middle C to the 2nd B above middle C. The highest note is NOBODY LIKE ME those are F tovE to f.
If you knew the song You Lie Reba (every time she preforms it) hits a high Gb in it so the fact she can hit almost to the top of her range in chest voice is amazing and unusual. Look at Mariah she can hit a high Eb but she cant hit a high c in her chest voice. Reba she is a master interpretor
Reba sounds great, as usual...but there are some songs that sound better when a women sings it and others where a man sings it....not politically correct but true....this is song that is better done by a guy....sorry
@PEANUTLOVEDADY Although she's white, she has worked with Brian Stokes Mitchell and various other non-white folks. Therefore, she probably would not be a big fan of your "pure white race pure white blood running through her veins" stuff, although I don't care myself.
@mclenptp Agree. Are there any other female versions? When Reba recorded it she said she was surprised because no woman had recorded it yet, has someone else since then.
WOW, I knew she did this on an album, but never got to see her preform it, Thanks so much for posting!!! Her range is so high, I would like to have seen her take that last line up HIGH, but its still wonderful!! 10 stars!!
Yeah but that would just be showing off LOL. I know todays singers seem to be under the impression that every song requires a grace note, in fact take out the grace note and most of todays popular songs are pretty average IMHO. One of the many things I love about Rebas style is that she gives as much as the song requires, Sweet Music Man is a perfect example of this.

Reba can't sing a bad song....this is probably the top female version. And the male version belongs none other than Dave Loggins. Anyone disagrees?

@mclenptp Agree. Are there any other female versions? When Reba recorded it she said she was surprised because no woman had recorded it yet, has someone else since then.
