  • Your demo is just wonderful !

  • I love this demo!

  • @lordoid,

No harm intended, of course the DSS1 is very nice!! Maybe it should be possible to load some DSS1 samples in the Fusion as well!

    Greetz!

  • It is a nice Synth/sampler, but we have to look ahead. Why should you use it nowadays, with far better synths/samplers like Alesis Fusion or Korg Kronos etc....

There are no sounds a couldn't make on my Fusion with a lot less hassle, without handling floppies etc.

This Korg is awesome, but today the possibilities are much more.

  • @MrSelectrix Well...it's a combination of different things. This Instrument offers additive synthesis (with waveform drawing) & 12bit sampling wich can pe processed thru a complete substractive engine w. true analog filter. You can create some very nice and special sounds with this combination. Your Fusion is a nice modern workstation wich offers tons of features and is far better to operate but the sound is of course very different to this freakish thing. ^^

  • I used to own one. Got a used one in 1991 for about $700. It was great for the analogue sounds and filters, but as a sampler it sucked. Used to spread different sounds as a "multisample" over the keyboard range. A bass 1.5 octave, then some drums, then a lead sound and so on. A bitch to program for sampling. Ace when it came to really low frequency drones and all kinds of bass sounds. And some unusual additive sounds could be made too. Remember some church organs and the like done that way...

  • On 1:48 I hear the introsequence-sound of 'Universal Nation'(Push). I wonder if Dirk Dierickx used a Dss-1 on that track?

  • I never was interested into KORG synths... now I see what I've missed. You just bought me with this review, I'm thinking about getting this machine. Thanks!

  • where to get samples ..for this beast ?

  • @rondroyd DSS1 complete library collection on the site retrosynth...

  • The floppy on mine just died. It still samples and sounds like a beast, though.

  • @RFrayo oh... sorry... :-(

  • @RFrayo You can get a virtual floppy for it.I have one,it cost about 70 pounds and is really easy to install. It used mem cards from cameras and can store all the sound banks on one card.Check ebay for them the guy sells them on there.

  • Great demo, finally one that does the DSS-1 justice ;)

How I fear the day that mine will break...

It's been sitting in a flight case for some years now, but every now and then I pull it out, just for THAT brutal bass :D

And hey, the watcher excerpt - I see you got good taste in music ;)

  • Very nice VOX sound at 11:51.

  • This was a GREAT demo -- thanks for posting it!

  • do i hear shades of Premiata-Forneria-Marconi?

  • Tutto Bene! FANTASTICO!

    GRAZIE (for this demo)

    :-)

  • I was looking to buy a vintage 80s sampler, like an Ensoniq Mirage, or one of those Akai racks. Now I'm considering this, but I'm wondering if the DSS has all the sampling posibilities that those machines have. Is the DSS-1 a real sampler, or a synth that's also good for sampling?

  • @brajtnerinjo its sampling capabilities are very basic, and editing isn't much fun. You'd have more fun with one of the better Akais (or E-Mus).

However, this is a beast for unusal sounds and it's got one of Korg's best filters (at least to my ears).

Don't buy one that doesn't come with some disks and a working floppy.

  • @brajtnerinjo

Get an Emu Emax matey.. best sounding machines out there. Best operating system by far too

  • @Chevytravelleruk But it doesn' have analog filters eh :)

  • @brajtnerinjo

Yes it does.. The Emax I has SSM filters. and they sound a lot better than the Korg. The Emax II has Digital ones although you would be hard pressed to hear the difference. I have both and have played them side by side

  • what's better this or the m1?

  • i used to have a DSS-1. I loved it even though it took ages to load a sample :)

    I had an M1, 01W-fd, DX7 and i traded them all away for a Ensoniq TS12 :(

Im trading this one for a Korg Kronos :)

  • Excellent Demo of the DSS-1. If you run across a DSS-1 for a low price, even if the disk drive doesn't work, you might consider buying it just for the midi controller capabilities. It is one of the cheapest keyboards that you can buy with aftertouch. Plus, even if you like pitch and mod wheels, the lever is better in some circumstances.

  • love those vintage sounds

  • @BompProductions .... w vintage! :-) ...

  • @AndyCrystalOfficial .... sono degli Analog Strings che in realtà - se non fosse che in questa versione sono in mono per un suono lead - non andrebbero suonati con tutto quel pitch bending... :-) Ciao e grazie per essere passato da qui... Jack

  • I have one but still haven't bought the floppies for it, so I really can't do anything with it at the moment...

  • @thefonz003 ..... :-)

  • makes me wish mine still worked :|

  • grande Jack

Ciao

  • Hi, the introduction song is yours? :)

  • @Andrij09 No.... introduction music by GarageBand.... :-)

  • Nice excerpts from PFM ;-)

  • @Colpocorto ... eh beh... mi son lasciato un po' andare... scusate...

  • Comment removed

  • The DSS-1 is one of the best Synts/Sampler on the Planet. I have it!!Yeah!!!!

Please help me.I need more Sounds.Where can I download Sounds for the DSS-1

  • @480Reggae Google search with words "korg dss1 sound free download"... a lot of audio material ! :-) good music

  • @JackOasys Thank you!!

  • nice demo, but the dss-1's real power is unleashed, turning it unisono with microtuning: solosounds, that reaches emulators edges.

  • @sEIGu yes, i know... thankyou for watching! :-)

  • Tell me please, the sounds are factory sounds or your own? If yes I wish I have them:).

  • @Andrij09 both ! 90% factory preset, 10% my patch/samples... :-) Thankyou for watching!

  • Very nice demo of DSS-1.

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • @pHr33kAcHu thankyou for watching! :-)

  • @Chrisssss92 thankyou Chrissssss92! Have fun with Dss1 ! Good music, my friend...

  • I have one but I can't make it sound: it powers and everything looks right, then I draw a waveform and play but nothing sounds... I guess I've been tricked 300€ ... U_U

  • @javiceres Uhhhh! It's a problem.... :-( After waveform drawing, you can apply parameters value...

  • What a great demo thanks for sharing! i would love to hear more!!! , This is my favorite Korg keyboard of all time.

  • @IHaveSynthed Thanks for watching!!!!! My favorite korg is oasys... :-)

  • my first synth!

  • Bohemoth of a synth,sounds nice!

  • Jolie demonstration l'ami. Quelle est la polyphonie de cet instrument?

  • @lifewasters 8 voices/voix.... ce n'est pas beaucoup mais a ce temps là c'etait deja assez pour jouer des beaux morceaux... Salu a tous le francais! Et merci !

  • Waow! What a synth!

  • @oryjen merci... :-) a bientot...

  • Have you ever tried loading DSS1 samples into your Oasys? Does it accept them?

  • @hard2start427 not, sorry, never tried... i don't know... :-(

  • I remember this synth,i was going to buy one years ago but didnt have the cash,i ended up with a korg m1-just goes to show it still has great sounds even though its old.Nice demo.

  • @Synthsound1 Thanks for your comment. I think Dss1 makes still beautiful figure. Powerful bass sounds, nice leadsynth... many musicians look for them...
