I've been propagating the yeast from the contents of shop bought, bottle conditioned beer. I'm currently using the yeast from a bottle of Worthingtons White Sheild and I can say the result so far smelling the ale I'm brewing is super duper. I found that dried yeast seems to give a yeasty aftertaste in home brew.
I used a starter the first time ever on a 5gal batch of mead and I am absolutely amazed with the results. I pitched at 8:30am when I came home from work at 4pm my carboy was bubbling like yours. Wassail!!!
I'm so lousy at keeping up with comments not on my own blog...
airscrew1 - absolutely yes. I use a blowoff tube, especially for beers for which I create a starter, because the contents can and frequently do exceed the room in my carboy. If that bubbler gets clogged, the glass carboy becomes a bomb, and it ain't pretty when it goes off. Even if I'm fairly certain the blowoff won't happen, I prefer a blowoff tube just in case.
Why can't you use a bubbler on top of the container holding the starter. I do. You mention this but don't give a reason, is it because you've had the contents overflow into the bubbler before?

what is the purpose of using a bubble because i'm fermenting for co2 generation for my indoor garden?
and do i still need to sterilize my material that touches the yeast?

Good video. I lucked out on my first Belgian Dubbel which ended up with a OG of 1.074... rather contaminable compared to the target 1.062- 1.068.
To promote faster fermentation, I went nuts with aeration but I was really wishing I'd brewed up a starter before this happened.
Fortunately it turned out OK, but from now on I'm using a starter, at least with this style.

I usually talk a lot of shit on YouTube when I don't agree with the smallest thing. This video is fantastic. Great job.
