one last comment: we had to fight (no other word for it) for our moment of silence. and we did it peacefully by joining hands making a strong circle. invited all those who had come in peace to take part. wish the countervigilants would have joined us but they weren't there out of respect nor to pay respects. they were there to agitate. somehow we found a way.

Maybe you should protest the PA calling children to "paradise" on Pal. Authority TV. Maybe u should publicly oppose systemic child abuse? As one of the organizers of this event, I am compelled to reply to your last comment. Mothers Across the World for Gaza was held around the world to specifically mourn the loss/murder/deaths of the children in Gaza killed earlier this year in January and early February. It was not a rally, a march but a VIGIL. On the morning of our peaceful action I was alerted to a counter vigil. I spoke with the organizer to emphasize what we were doing. Thought we had an understanding.

When you hold a vigil for one side of the conflict (especially the side whose OWN POLLS say that 70% of Pals want to continue fighting even if there is no occupations and they have E. Jer. as their capital), then you raise questions as to motive and honesty.

You had a very public vigil and there is every right in the world for people to come by and challenge you and raise counter views. If you wanted a quite vigil were you can ignore the facts, then you can rent a private hall next time.

Cult like indeed insofar as the extremists go, but i saw a lot of families crying in the footage of the bombings in gaza. There aren't that many differences- don't turn it into "us" and "them". Not every palestinian is a kamikazi zealot; there are normal families there too. I've never seen these routine celebrations or commercials, but i'll look them up. all in all wars turn people ugly and it's always the avg person who has to pay. =\

If you go to Palestinian Media Watch, they monitor Official PA controlled Pal. TV. It is very bizzarre. If you go into my favorites, I have a children's show with a squeeky voiced puppet tell kids how he is going to cause a massacre with a "AK-47". Often PA TV show mothers commanding their children to die and celebrating their deaths. They exemplify them as role models to follow. But you're right, there are always people who see through this propaganda & the humanity will come in.

It is the one thing that really changed my perspective of the Middle East conflict. The media tends to shy away from it, although there have been a couple good reports (a documentary by the BBC on Jihad camps & suicide schools for kids and one by Martin Fletcher of MSNBC on a PA commercial where a "dead" Mohammed Al-Dura calls children to follow him to "Paradise" (where they show an amusement park) as a lady sings "How sweet is the blood of a child martyr".

I have three observations I'd like to make:

1. The list of Israeli children doesn't make add up because between 12/27/08 and 01/23/09 only 13 Israelis where killed, some of them were soldiers. The hecklers should have included only those who were killed during the recent offensive on Gaza. Coincidentally, in the last 7 years, less than 25 Israeli civilians were killed by rockets from Gaza, while more than 2200 Palestinian civilians were killed by Israeli forces.

I see the interruption by some members of the Jewish community here as highly disrespectful (no matter if some are well intentioned). If they wanted to organize a joint Palestinian-Israeli mourning, put out the invite and we would come to that. But you don't show up to one event, especially a vigil, uninvited, and make it some other kind of event. That's not respect. Their comments also indicate that the motivation of this gesture for many of them is about PR for Israel, "defending Israel."

When I heard that some members of the Jewish community were going to show up (besides, me, of course!), I contacted the organizer of the vigil to let her know and give her the phone number of the main contact. They spoke, and presumably worked out how things were going to go, but apparently there was a miscommunication over the nature of the event and the order of things. That does not excuse the interruptions - it was the wrong time and place.

Those people didn't come in peace, they they were trying to hijack the event. This makes them look bad. If they wanted to organize their own vigil they could have done that but this was a vigil fro Palestinian children who died during the horrible attack. I agree that teh sufering ins't on both sides.
