She is truly incredible. Some people simply cannot be topped and she if definately one of the greatest performers to ever grace any stage. A most beautiful person in every way.
@soupkup1 Ironically when she was the biggest star on Broadway you could have had a front row seat for less than $10. Now you have to pay over $100 just to sit in the balcony. Merman was truly one of a kind. She wasn't the most beautiful actress of her time, or the best singer on Broadway, certainly not a dancer and her acting skills needed some polish but when she was on the stage you couldn't keep your eyes off her - she was truly a star in every sense of the word. What a performer.
I am afraid many young singers today could fail to belt out like Ethel Merman when they would reach her age in this clip. I cannot believe she never took singing lessons befor she made her debut. Nobody would mistake her voice for another's. She was a real showstopper!
Ethel was class personified. But notice how unprofessional the second violinist is? He looks away from the music and the conductor to observe Ethel and the audience several times!!
SHE HAD TOTAL TRUST IN THE AUDIENCE AND GAVE THEM EVERYTHING, WE LOVED EVERY SECOND AND GAVE IT BACK TO HER TEN FOLD - I CAN STILL HEAR HER SINGING FROM ABOVE :) THANKS ETHEL.
If memory serves, as staged in the original broadway show, the number is basically sung TO Annie, Ethel barely touched the lyric. She sure made it hers though.
Fabulous battleaxe.
