  • For 35 years or more I always thought this was Elvis, singing! When I learned it was Terry Stafford, I asked, who is Terry Stafford? Never the less, it's a fantastic bit of singing! A favorite!

  • woah, this song definetly reminds me of my auntie:')

  • the best version. terry was terry .

  • This song was popular in 1964, way before Elvis recorded it. I think it's the best of the 2, it is hard to remake an original.

  • @cbellue Fail. Elvis recorded it 1962, it appeared on the "Pot Luck" album...Terry made his cover version 1964. So..Fail! - but you're right about one thing - it's hard to remake an original.

  • He did it better, cause it was the original!

  • @CL137626 Yep, the original version was slightly better..Elvis' that is

  • love the photos

  • When this song 1st came out, everyone thought it was Elvis, even his manager was up set thinking that Elvis went behind his back and made a recording with out telling him, Fact, Elvis did not sing this song on a live Stage, a year before he died, and that was the 1st and only time Elvis sang this song, he changed his voice, so he would not sound Like Tarry Stafford when he sang it.

  • @Cmr4brandy If it was the "1st and only time Elvis sang this song"..how come that it can be heard on the Pot Luck album from 1962 ??

  • cool pictures and great song thanks,74sodapop

  • OOOOO! I love this song!

  • This song belongs to Terry, real nice voice.

  • 13 people are crazy as shithouse rats.

  • Saw Terry Stafford sing this on Dick Clark's American Bandstand show. Sure wish that version could be found. He was *super* clean cut for that stage.

  • Why do some people type in Capital letters what's all that about !!!!

  • WOW WHAT A TRIP TO THE PASS, NOW THIS IS AN ORIGINAL,TERRY STAFFORD DOESNT NEED TO SOUND LIKE ELVIS BECUZ HE HAS HIS OWN SOUND THERE IS NO NEED TO EVEN COMPARE THIS MAN TO ELVIS BECAUSE THEY ARE 2 DIFFRENT PEOPLE, THIS IS DEFINITLY A TEARJERKER.SUSPICION THATS THE NAME OF THIS GROOVY BEAT R. I. P. TERRY.

  • This song was terry's not Elvis song. In a interview in the sixties Elvis had said this was one of his favorites and thank terry stafford.....

  • @PistolPeteNL well, it's says on the video of elvis of this song, that elvis recorded it in 1962 and this song of terry was in 1962, so... it's kinda confusing! but the 2 versions of this song are great

  • This DESTROYS Elvis's version. Hands down.

  • I didn't know the history of this song until a few minutes ago...I was reading about the Phil Spector murder and somehow ended up here learning about Elvis and Terry and Suspicion. I wanted to know what Phil Spector and Elvis had in common and this song is one of them. Who wrote what, who sounds better. It's a tie for me....

  • very, very polished version of an Elvis song (seems like I'm listening Pat Boone covering "tutti frutti" - ridiculous).....just for radio airplays. Elvis is more raw, he sings with his heart and don't try to be the corny guy who sings every note perfect in the block. Enough said

  • I remember hearing this song when I was a kid. Stafford is the original one. No one does it better then him. Sorry not even Elvis. Great song. Thank you for the posting.

  • GREAT sound! Remember it well. . .pirate radio XCFT land-based, I played this for the G.I.s in '64. Bought 45 for $1 at base BX @ RAF Croughton, Northants. . . .great days. Thanks for uploading. CFN

  • I know Elvis did this but I like this version much better! I know

our special friend in Spain will love it when he hears it! Thank

    you for this great upload!

  • out of sight!

  • 13 people was fooled thinking it was elvis.they shouldn't dislike it,it's a classic, and so is the lp(got it on cd too).

  • its Elvis!??

  • @CostantinoLenzi NO it's not Elvis but he's doing a great job to sound like him....

  • @hungryherbie Elvis has song with same name. This isn't Elvis it's Terrys

  • @CostantinoLenzi no it,s better!!

  • @mick59707 hey hey wait....now i listen also version of elvis and it is more stron full of character, its good but Elvis is Elvis

  • Sorry to disappoint, but this song was done by Terry Stafford first and Elvis like it so much he did his own version later. It was well known that Elvis paid attention to the few singers like Terry and Ral Donner who sounded a lot like him and he actually liked both of them.

  • the best elvis sucks by the way in 70

  • perfecto.!!!!!!

  • this reminds me of cafes with little juke boxes on the tables

  • GREAT ..THANKS !!

    ERIK TIELMAN, FLORIDADAADAA

  • Never realized what a great base guitar line was in this song.

  • When I first heard the song in early 1964 I thought it was Elvis! (But only for a moment or two...) either way, a great hit from the mid sixties. A great version and of course this was the hit version and that is what counts. Everyone likes to listen to a familiar recording.

  • Amazing the Similarities in their Voices.Same as Jackie Wilson and Eddie Holland.

  • I expect this song to be playing in Hell's jukebox on permanant repeat. Right next to the Chalkboard nail-scratching kettle-banging team.

  • Growing up I always thought this was Elvis. I recentley compared the two, and I like Terry Staffords version better. He recorded it first too.

  • sorry elvis terry he is the winner

  • OK - I know that Elvis is supposed to be 'The King' . . . However, I strongly 'suspect' that the Terry Stafford version is better - imho - sorry, Elvis fans

  • I don't know whether Terry or Ral were trying to sound like Elvis, but in no way was Matt impersonating Frank......He just sounds different!

    Anyway all were FAB :-)

  • This is really Elvis! checked it out and Elvis recorded this first!

  • I think everyone's opinion is a good one... (wait for it... wait for it...) BUT!!!

Anyone happen to notice just who is trying to sound like whom?

  • Elvis covered eveything I think, Some things by Elvis were good others not so much .. Terry Staffords version of Suspicion was first and best, Elvis covered it but when I want the original I go to Stafford.

  • We love you, Terry Stafford! You were great. God bless you, Terry Stafford. You'll never be forgotten. You were GREAT!!!

  • It was April 1964. I was 14. An acquaintance ( 16) was going to see his girlfriend who was babysitting. The problem? She brought her friend over. The solution? Bring me over and lie about my age. Wow. We necked all night while my friend and his girlfriend were in the next room. She french kissed me! I knew it was love. This song and others of that year played in the backgound. Whenever I drive by that house I smile to myself. Hell I`m a grandfather now. Our senses were so alive back then eh?

  • Anothr Elvis soundalike...BS.....Terry along with Ral Donner have great voices, they both sound great.

  • Terry Stafford had a much better voice than Elvis-

it is just as Matt Monro is a much better singer than Frank Sinatra, but timing is the key to all-

  • I love elvis but this one is the same and if he made this before the great one it sounds as if he followed him But I do love them both I just got a new things so now I can see the songs I long for and remember as a child

  • I know Elvis was a mega star.. & Terry was a one hit wonder.. but it's Terry on this one!

  • Great song and great pics from that era. Thanks for posting this!!

  • hungryherbie.....i read this story in the book ELVIS, WHAT HAPPENING, [BOOK BY HIS BODY GUARDS WHO WERE FIRED BY HIS FATHER]...PUP?DID U EAT THIS PUP? HUNGRY HERBIE!!!!!!1

  • @09bnunez how do you know his body guards were not making up the story ..well they were fired ..as far as the pup goes that means the story has no real credibility ..and btw I don't eat pups their to small LOL

  • he was in the studio when elvis put this song on a album, he took it from elvis recorded it JUST like elvis , ELVIS WAS MAD!!!! when he heard terry version, and it was a top ten hit 4 the crooked stafford.....[true story]

  • @09bnunez would like to believe it but I think you were sold a pup

  • God I Loved This Song in The Sixties******

I Always Thought It Was Elvis Singing*****

    Still Love It!

  • FIVE stars...great song.....

  • One of my favorite songs from the 60's.My parents bought a new '64 Impala, I can remember riding in it and hearing this song on the AM radio! Those were the days!

  • @Mercurystarify DITTO THAT,,,BUT OURS WAS A '63

  • I am a huge Elvis fan but his doesn't come close to Terry Stafford's version.

  • Elvis's version owns this haha this is just funny

  • hey herbie, just the opposite for me, I didn't even know Elvis sang this song first

  • Oh, and by the way Chumamania, I was perhaps a little overly critical in my earlier commentary, and for that I apologise.

  • Hi Chumamania, Night Rider was the B-side of Elvis' 1963 hit Girls, Girls, Girls. With or without 2 r's, it's a kick-ass number that should have been an A-side.

  • what a song and what an era I'm glad I lived thru it

  • terr sat in [studio] when elvis sang this song ....terry stole it ...elvis was mad!!!!

  • ARE YOU PEOPLE FUCKING RETARDED. ELVIS WAS A FAT JEW WHO COULDN'T SING WORTH OF SHIT. BUT HE FIT "THE IMAGE" HIS JEW MANAGERS WERE LOOKING FOR. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS FRIENDS SAID HE COULDN'T SING. THERE IS NO FUCKING COMPARISON TO ELVIS' VERSION. HAHAHAHAHA YEAH, I BET ELVIS WISHES HE COULD SING LIKE THIS GUY. IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE...........THIS VERSION BLOWS THE ELVIS VERSION AWAY.

  • BUT HE SOUNDS JUST LIKE ELVIS

  • @bill900zx Elvis sounded like Terry

  • "Maybe I'm suspicious cause true love is so hard to find". Love those lyric's.

  • Really cool pictures from the '50's.... Really take you back to the day, reminds you how many years have gone by.

  • sure Elvis had a great voice and did a great job singing this song, but it just doesn't compare on this song when you combine his vocals, the whispered background voices and that wierd eery kind of compressed sound which is made by that accordion? organ? The sound was unique and Terry's version of this song will always remain number one in my mind's ears. A true classic.

  • @MegaKorman I've always wondered, too, about the rhythymic, muted accompaniment that you describe in Terry Stafford's "Suspicion." After dumpty-dump years, I've decided that it's a trumpet. I've never tired of hearing this great song. Every time I listen to it, it reminds of a major eighth-grade crush I had in the spring of 1964 (and it took a *long* time to get over it...)

  • @50Emerald I believe you're right. It's a trumpet. Muted and way in the background. Love the sound of it.

  • Yes, this is truly the real and best version. Supreme voice and talent,.

  • when i was 10yrs old i couldnt wait to grow up and feel the way this guy sings...ive never been suspicious but do i EVER enjoy this song.takes me back.

  • Only Terry could do this song. I love it RIP Terry!

  • On this song, Terry did a better Elvis than the King himself. But there is but one King.

  • manda ver, washington. Quero ver você tocando baixo nesta música, mas prefiro Elvis!

  • manda ver, washington. Quero ver você tocando baixo nesta música, mas prefiro Elvis!

  • This Terry Stafford song is a *masterpiece*...

  • Terry Stafford was paid off by the Colonel and Elvis not to sing because they felt threatened by the fact that Terry Stafford sounded so much like Elvis. Terry Stafford is the ORIGINAL ARTIST of this song. That is why we all like the original better because it is Terry's song,

  • Terry Stafford did the original and it's the best.

  • Terry kicks it in this song....And yes, personally, I think he does a better job than...dare I say it....The King!!!!

  • I've always loved this song. As a young teen, I would sing it in the shower, on the streets of Moorefield WV, Vietnam. It was such an upbeat sound and I still try to sing along when I need a little lift. Was a sad day when I learned that Terry Stafford had passed away on 03/17/1996.

  • Lets cut to the chase. Elvis was great and has earned his place in music, but when it comes to this song, Terry's version is the best.

  • ....IL MIO PRIMO 45 GIRI.....SPLENDIDO E INDIMENTICABILE RICORDO !!!!....

  • prachtig

  • I won`t enter into the debate as to who does it the best, but this version is great. Thank you for loading, otherwise i would never have even heard of Terry Stafford :(

    *****

  • I love this song! Me encanta!!!!

  • Take away all the Glitter the publicity and the hype of ELVIS. Take and put blue jeans on both of them.TERRY would win hands down. And I am a ELVIS FAN.But you got to call them like you see them

  • @mcgaheefamily if's and but's won't change anything ..you should remember Elvis was unique a one off ......nobody including Terry can match his unique voice and to say Terry wins hands down is a bit over the top he does come close but that's it "close"

  • @hungryherbie C'mon, this is a great song and appreciate it. I honestly feel this is the best version period of this song. Elvis was great and will always remain one of the greatest, but in this case Terry did it better.

  • @dti466 When I heard this version on the radio about 12 months ago I was surprised when the DJ announced it was Terry Stafford because up to that point I have never heard of Terry and I assumed it was Elvis ..so having listened to both versions over the last 12 months a number of times I still believe Elvis shades it but no doubt Terry has a great voice and he had me fooled anyway that's just my opinion cheers herbie

  • i am a huge elvis fan,but for me this version is better.i think it,s the background beat that does it.

  • @hungryherbie Clearly Elvis had the better career, but that doesn't mean he automatically does every song better than anyone else. I vote Terry Stafford on this one and Elvis on everything else.

  • @MikeWarrenAZ Mike I think that was an under statement refering to Elvis having a better career when in fact Elvis's career was second to none ..Terry just had the one big hit being this one but I'm sure people at the time thought it was Elvis singing it clearly I did

  • @hungryherbie there is no coming close. It's there own versions. lol get over it. I like terrys more.

  • @seven7years that's your opinion and I respect it ..if we all had the same opinions it would be a dull world ,so

here is my two pennies worth Elvis with his voice would be very difficult for anyone to beat including Terry

  • @hungryherbie I can beat his voice.

  • @seven7years get yourself on the X Factor and let Simon Cowell judge you if your that good ...can't wait

  • @hungryherbie deal

  • @seven7years ...I have my SUSPICIONS you'll chicken out ...lol

  • @seven7years Funny guy let me know when your doing your audition I could do with a laugh

  • @hungryherbie It's all set up already.

  • Sounded better than Elvis

  • @mcgaheefamily I agree with you!

  • sori to say but this is the better version of this song . . . soriii elvis !!

  • Love Elvis, but this song belongs to Terry, my favorite version...

  • Everything evolves, less music. Terry or Elvis...

    ... old times, good music.

  • Come on now, we all know that it was Terry Stafford sound on this that made us all think that we all could sing and sound like Elvis...Let's see those hands up please!

  • he sounds EXACTLY like Elvis!!

  • @MYheroMJrip yes very much so

  • Terry Stafford version of Suspicion over Elvis Presley's by far.

  • @chumamania Never thought I'd say that but yes Terry Stafford's version is far superior to Elvis! Terry is singing from his heart while Elvis sounds like he is singing too fast & it's just another cut on an album ♥ msstevie ♥

  • @chumamania Unlike Elvis who had 80+ further hit singles we`re still waiting for the follow up hit single from Terry. Guess he didnt like Elvis`s later songs enough to knock out another cover ...

  • @chumamania Get a fucking life. \

  • @NightRrider1212 Alright there Night Rider with two r's... did you come up with that name on your own?

  • @chumamania Well, the thing is that Elvis hadmore than 100 hits and Stafford only this one.

  • @chumamania agreed

  • when i was alittle kid i though it was roy orbinson

  • the real white trash

  • best version...sorry

  • Every time I heard this song, I think of beautiful, warm days in May, 1964, when I had an eighth-grade crush on a honey that I still think about today...

  • @50Emerald 1964? I sure know and remember what you mean. Everything was new, fresh and exciting in those days with endless dreams and possibilities...right?? Fun, dating and adventure, well nowl there's always the ealry bird specials to look forward to now if you can get there on time after the afternoon nap !. Nothing lasts forever.

  • Great song, my favorite in 64, a freshman in high school. Stafford was a very good song writer. "Amarillo by Morining" sure helped George Strait's Music Career! "B" side of this cut "I'll Touch a Star Star" was a close second on my favorite list. We lost Terry too soon!

  • Terry and Elvis both sing this song and I love them both

  • Awesome song, haunting background vocals and cool bass line.

  • Rexall. I feel old. Geat pictures though. I was born just in time to remember how simple things where back then.

  • Oh yes I remember this one so well. Music from the 60s was the greatest.

  • Merry christmas from Columbia,SC

  • i had heard on my local radio station that terry was a radio disc jock down in tx. made a statement that anybody could make a hit out a elvis song. i guess history has provened true. i heard this story in 64. i wore my vynl 45 out playing too much.

  • I like the shot of the old original A&P..

  • Not half bad this! Sadly, people like Elivs, Beatles, Lester Piggott, Pele, Georgie Best, JFK, Viv Richards and Botham were blessed with that little bit extra which makes them a world apart from the rest!

  • Come on, people! Better than Elvis? In your dreams!

  • Elvis always will be "The King", but, I´m sorry, the BEST versión of Suspicion is this, from Terry Stafford! Thanks a lot Soda for post it!

  • I first heard this in the 70's near Bliss Gate. Tony "out the road uddie" Wood hummed it between nipping in and out the Alma at Rock Cross, while trying to keep love letters from Peter to my mum to himself. We all loved sunny Gibraltar even in uniform. Good old Sid x

  • One of my favorites. Love the old photos. Thanks.

  • He "stole" this from Elvis' Pot Luck with Elvis (1962) album. Stafford made it a hit (1964) probably BECAUSE everyone who heard it thought it was Elvis and then were amazed at how much he sounded like Big E when they found out it wasn't Elvis.

Personally, I like Stafford's version better, but that may be because it was the one I heard first.

  • The words hit hard..

  • Yo tambien la oia en Mexico D.F en las estaciones radio capital (PROGRAMA ESTUDIANTES 1260) LA PANTERA, RADIO EXITOS XERC en mis años de estudiante. THANKS 74sodapop for this melody is faboluos is one of my melodys of old times with Terry Stafford

  • Esta rola me remonta a mi infancia , la escuchaba en Radio capital, en aquellos dias en Mexico DF , cuando no habia tanto desmadre como hoy.

  • @28211145 The "Pot Luck" LP recorded '61, released 1962 (Presley). Stafford hit #3 in 1964 on the Crusader label; Elvis SINGLE released same year with Kiss Me Quick as the 'A' side. Elvis 45 released on the Gold Standard series, Elvis had a lot of other songs going single-wise same year, and that 'B' side went nowhere. Terry Stafford benefited because the record buying public at that time recognized a great singer of that one great song, and his back-up singers also were important! DAVEDJ

  • This version came out in 1964. What year did Elvis sing this?

  • Comment removed

  • the best

  • Why is there 12 dislikes for this song. Is there something wrong with you all..?

  • The first, and best, Elvis impersonator.

  • misschien is t nog nooit iemand opgevallen maar mij wel.terry gebruikt t woord suspicion helemaal niet alleen de achtergrond zangeressen gebruiken t .elvis dus weer wel elvis is the king.groetjes uit maastricht

  • people peole listen elvis was the best terry stafford sings not suspicion only the background singers yous the word suspicion only the king .

  • sorry ravenwolf1952 it was a typo.

  • To ravenwolf1962: I also listened to this song many times late at night on an old tube type radio. I believe the radio station was WLS Chicago. I was living in a small west Texas town of Baird and it came in somewhat clearer. I spent most of the 60's playing organ and singing lead in a rock band.At 62 i still love this music.ROCK AND ROLL FOREVER.

  • @stillrockinat61 WLS was a Godsend listening to it as I did in New Orleans - a great Northern big city perspective. We also had WBOK, WTIX, & WNOE - all great stations. DAVEDJ

  • i remember this song so long ago,i would tweek the dials of my tube am radio and pull it in thru the static in the wee hours of moring,,some far away station with a W' call sign so i knew it was east coast radio and iwas west coast, this is one of the all time greats, i miss am radio,

  • Judy , do you remember when this played on the juke box..way back in 1964 ?

  • @ftjax i do!

  • @ftjax my name is not judy; but i remember!

  • @ftjax Judy, it's me, Eddie again...It was the "El Roco" club in Columbia,SC March,1964....well, I guess she doesn't visit you tube....

  • 74sodapop--Just thought I'd let you know that 'pmbloem' has ripped off this video and posted it as his own. I got a couple of mine stolen as well....

  • I agree with you 74sodappo...someone finally ca,e along who could do Elvis better than Elvis him selvis, Elvis could not even reach the high note, guess Parker need some more gamberling money so he go E to record it, i can just hear the talk in Parkers office, "How dare someone think he can do you, better than you...we'll show him go out there and record it yourself'... it's a dredfull sound and quality, give me Stafford's version any day...Sorry Elvis, you were not to blame...

  • @RedrooAU ELVIS HIM SELVIS!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! And you're probably right concerning the Colonel. Wasn't Elvis in the army still back then?

  • This was always the only Elvis song I ever really liked. Then I found out it wasn"t even Elvis... Now it's my favorite Elvis song that's not by Elvis.

  • terry staffords version was the best

  • i believe he is a better elvis than elvis at this song..

  • First time I heard this song I thought it was elvis. So very close to his voice.

  • @methos101 me too! xD

  • Very unique voice.

  • Terry was NOT an Elvis impersonator, just influenced by Elvis. Terry is great but Elvis is in a class by HIMSELF!!!

  • best version...beautiful song
