I bought a dvd at Walmart for $5.00 called, "Vintage Christmas Classics". It has this cartoon, another one called, "Jack Frost" which is scary also, and one called, "The Shanty At Christmas" about to children who are starving, who go ino the cold to gather wood, and dream of going to candy land. These cartoons are scary, sad, and haunting.
@Kimmell2010 You mean "The Shanty Where Santy Claus Lives"? Dude, don't diss that cartoon, that's actually a Merrie Melodie before the days of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. It's actually about a poor orphan who is starving, but finds shelter in Santa's shanty. "Jack Frost" is Ub Iwerks, who was Walt Disney's childhood friend that did that cartoon when he founded his own studio; and this one is actually funny.
Does anyone know where I can get this cartoon? It was on a tape I had back in the day. It had this cartoon, a christman punch and Judy, some orphan cartoon.Any help would be appreciated.
When I was 5 years old this really scared the hell out of me. The idea that inanimate objects can be invested with malevolent animation and manifest death and injury is probably a subconscious fear in the primitive part of our brain. But why the odd references to Jimmy Durante and Richard Wagner?
I LOVE it! Don't know why I love these creepy old B&W holiday things, but I think it adds to the "magic" feeling of the holiday. I'm 52, and will always love Christmas, keeping the Christ in the holiday first, of course. THANK you for posting this!
Are you sure this is Fleischer? The naturalistic, rounded animals and the music seem more like early MGM or Warner Brothers. (The Eskimo looks a lot like Buddy.)

So apparently at 2:47 they were performing a Satanic ritual, inorder to summon a demon from Hell to animate the snowman.
(Now I know what LSD must be like)

My God, why were old cartoons so terrifying? It must've been traumatic growing up as a kid in those days XD
(And no, I'm not doing one of these 'child sensitivity' rants. The snowman's face melting into the evil form was as freaky as hell. Period.)

Who was the snowman trying to impersonate when he made his nose big and said "hucha hucha hucha" when he was playing the piano at 5:04?
WhoahDudeProductions 4 years ago
That would be Jimmy Durante - I think this is from around 1930, so he goes wa-ay back.
Geez, this cartoon gave me the serious wiggins back when I was little.

I can't believe this was made in 1940. I didn't even know they still made b/w cartoons back then!

My granddad tells me they used to run this cartoon in like the early 1950s on television kids shows.
