I'm find my compost isnt heating up.I put leaves grass clipping coffee grounds, egg shells, and old tobacco leave in .too weeks ago and it is still not heating up why?:
@mogges1 An essential is green+brown. Sounds like you could use some less nutrient rich more filler type materials (browns). Are ur leaves dry or fresher/wet?
excellent tip about the air. that was one of my concerns i had about composting.. was worried about a smell. so glad you pointed out. thank you. :) wonderful video
ok i have taken over my dads abandoned compost heap it's under a pine tree, and been there 3-4 years and i havent seen any useable compost from it, none of it looks as soil like as the pics of "finished compost" i've found. when i got my hands on it it was nearly 100% carbon just old grass, dead leaves, last years prunings, and ash i've been adding greens to it since april and turn it every few weeks the best i can. should i move it, wtf is wrong with it?
Cool , this is an excellent video to make a homemade compost , but i want to know if while starting a compost pile must put soil inside it while it's still working or no ?
I might have been misinformed about my compost pile before I watched this video. I segregated a mound of dirt, and I have been mixing our old fruits and vegetables into it. I have been keeping it moist. Am I wasting my time with this?
Okay! So If im goin to make my own compost which i don't have most of the stuffs you shown on this video..! All i have is dead leaves from all kinds of plants like papaya trees; starfruit tree Mango trees Banana trees; Tamarind trees Macadamia nut trees; once or twice a week fresh cut grass; bananas; all couple variety vine vegetable plants... Can i make a compost use these?
@808MAUIpnoi74 It should work. Dead leaves don't have much nutient in them. On the other hand they are useful for mixing with grass cuttings which would otherwise only partially compost. Composting is really pretty simple. You chuck everything you have on the heap, make it wet, make a pile at least 6' x 3' x 3 to keep the heat in, turn it whenever you get a chance and piddle on it as circumstances dictate.
Thank you so much. Nearly every gardening article I read says "add compost" and even suggesting having your own compost. Yet, there is so little information about the composting methods used and what to put it. So THANKS.
Sorry, have to pick your brain one more time. I live by the ocean, and I hear that seaweed is probably the best fertilizer known. Can the seaweed be used on a compost pile as well? Or can seaweed be applied directly on a garden bed? When storms occur here, large amounts of seaweed are available. And there are no restrictions for seaweed removal here. Thanks again.
Ok, you said it needs a "little" water, but your compost pile is "outside". What if it rains for several days? Does it "ruin" the compost pile? Or should the pile be covered? Can the compost pile also be self standing? I mean.... not fenced? Sorry for throwing all these questions at you. And thanks for replying earlier.
A ratio is a fraction so for every 3 (handfulls, pounds, bags, truckloads, whatever) of "brown material" use 1 (of the same unit) of green material. In other words no matter how big your compost is it should be 3/4 brown and 1/4 green.
@revealer007 wen dealin with ratios it doesnt matter the size, weight, or volume. put it like this, if ur using pounds, 3:1, 3 to 1: means 3 pounds to 1 pound. when using cups, 3:1, 3 to 1: 3 cups to 1 cup. so the measurement can always change jus as long as u keep it relevant to each other. now the way they use it here 3brown to 1green: wutever size or volume u use jus keep the ratio 3:1 if u use 3lbs brown use 1lb green, if u use 3,000lbs brown use 1,000lbs green, 3cups brown use 1cup green.
Hmm. One question. I will till my very FIRST garden this spring. Would it be a good idea to spread compost over the area that I will till so that the compost mixes evenly with the soil? Or, till first.... and apply compost later in the growing stage? Or, both.
@ajfelix67 Ah, good question(s). The thing about compost is that there is never enough of it, so you might be better off keeping it for heavy feeders such as potatoes and leeks and letting your peas and such have what is left.
@ajfelix67 Ah, good question(s). The thing about compost is that there is never enough of it, so you might be better off keeping it for heavy feeders such as potatoes and leeks and letting your peas and such have what is left.
I can't wait to start my compost, I just wish the snow would melt away for good and the warm sun would green everything here!! And BTW Mr.In the blue shirt ur hot!! ;)
I want to start to compost, can I used cooked food with heavy spices in a compost pile? Also I was wondering if your backyard is a magnet for water will compost be safe to make there? Thank you.
Personally, I love to compost, I started with one bin that I bought at discount through the city. Now I operate with 4 bins and even a worm bin that consumes everything compostable around the house and yard. Really it's about taking accountability for our refuse. As a people movement, we could reduce trash volume and tax expense by nearly 40 - 60 percent f we commit to composting. And why not, the return pays you. We each could say we have millions working for us (microbes).

Great way to think "compost"! But, to make it easier to produce the heavy, water-laden compost, think air! On the compost spot, lay down a mat of about 4-6 inches of course brush clippings, cut to about 12 inches. On this bed, lay a layer of about 6-10 inches of course "brown" material. Top this with about 4 inches of "green" material. Make the pile about 4 feet wide, and any length; about 3 to 6 feet high. If lots of fine materials, lay-in a second layer of course brush about half way up!
Our family is planning to create a "family garden" in the spring of 2011. We are now in Dec. would we have adequate time to produce compose to at least begin our project?
Active Air Compost Tea is also an excellent way to use compost to feed and diversify the biology of your soil. Recipe: 1 cup compost, 1 tbsp unsulfured black strap molasses per 1 gallon of r/o, distilled, or de-chlorinated water. Place all in a bucket and bubble using an aquarium air pump and airstone for 24-36 hours. hen it's all done brewing, you can use it as soil drench or foliar (on top of and under the leaf) acts as a natural pesticide; coating plant in a "biofilm". Happy (organic) growing
If you REALLY want your compost to get HOT fast, add about 4 or 5 handfuls of blood meal and a couple of shovelfuls of compost from an old compost pile (substitute some soil if you're making your first pile.) The nitrogen in the blood meal will get the pile going fast; if you do as Scott suggests using chicken manure, this will do the same, BUT BE WARNED!! Chicken manure is VERY HIGH IN NITROGEN!!! It will burn your plants like synthetic nitrogen if you don't let the compost finish cooking!
Thanks for the video. I'm about to start composting for the first time. Scott says 2-6 months for the compost to be ready - but is it possible to allow materials to compost TOO long? If I start composting too early or use it too late, could I actually lose nutrient levels from my compost? Thanks!
@nephilism - compost can lose nutrients if you let it sit in the rain too long. Maybe a year or more. It depends on how much rain you get. The carbon content of compost is pretty stable. When you dig into soil you added compost to a year before, you'll still see the black stuff.
What about a Human who is a vegetarian? Just joking but my compost does not look like that. It looks like sludge. I have to put it in a sunny part of the garden and let the sun hit it for a week then mix it in with the dirt. It seem to do ok then but the finish product does not look like yours. Maybe too much green and not enough brown.
I have compost now I need to shift it. IM going to try and just pore it onto a tarp rake the twigs out then store it in a heavy duty plastic trash bag and then put it into a plastic garbage can with a lid. Now I have to start all over with the fall leaves.

I recently started my own compost, but What are the friendly bugs we are looking for? Not maggots right??? That's what I've got in mine, Do I have to start all over??? Please help
@TahshaTPitsMe: Maggots help break down and recycle nutrients back into the soil. It's normal to have them in your compost pile. Other people have earthworms in their compost. They all help make nitrogen. Nitrogen is a nutrient that plants need to survive. I like to use compost tea for my plants. It's more potent and easier for plants to absorb the nutrients.
You can use a trach can just drill lots of holes in it. This is helpfull if you live with next door neighboots. They might not want to see a pile of decomposing mater.
Yep, compost can be made in a month and a half. It really can cook FAST! I make chicken manure compost and it kicks my garden into such a high gear that it's sometimes spooky! lol
I am selling plans on ebay of how to build Pyramid shaped Greenhouses. They have many advantages to other greenhouses like faster growing and much healthier plants. I produced the plans myself. Go check it out at ebay and search: Pyramid Greenhouse Building Plans
I enjoyed the video and found it informative, thanks. But I notice you didn't mention anything about a lid on the top - and I'm pretty sure that it's very important to fit one, so rain doesn't wash important nutrients out of the compost as it's developing.
The finished product looked great didn't it!. You've certainly inspired me. I'm going to start composting too! Thanks again.
You retarded peice oflittle kid shit. Weed doesn't look like that retarded fucking gay person. Go on google and type in weed plant and look at it CAREFULLY. Retard...
@level3yo: i wasnt talking about weed the drug. i was talking about A weed in the flower garden, A weed, NOT, weed, itself. notice i said "it looked like A weed", not it looks like weed, DUH
i know what u could do to make you not hungry and help ur compost ----------------------------------------------- eat the new sunchips and throw the biodigratedable bag that makes a lot of noise in the compost
In the winter, you can create the same effect using leaves, scrapes, and lawn clippings, put in a pile for a "garden", put black plastic over it, poke holes in plastic, and then by spring, you now have a raised bed.
Sounds like a good idea. Good thing I eat a lot of potatoes and the best part is I'll finally have a use for potato peels because I'm not a big fan of potato peels.
Nice video on composting. I am showing this to the kids as we are planning a compost bin, or maybe just a pile for next year to use in the garden and flower beds.

I want to take cuttings from the flowers i have already, but don't want to spend LOADS of money on peat and/or compost.

I recently started my own compost, but What are the friendly bugs we are looking for? Not maggots right??? That's what I've got in mine, Do I have to start all over??? Please help
TahshaTPitsMe 1 year ago
@TahshaTPitsMe: Maggots help break down and recycle nutrients back into the soil. It's normal to have them in your compost pile. Other people have earthworms in their compost. They all help make nitrogen. Nitrogen is a nutrient that plants need to survive. I like to use compost tea for my plants. It's more potent and easier for plants to absorb the nutrients.

You can use a trach can just drill lots of holes in it. This is helpfull if you live with next door neighboots. They might not want to see a pile of decomposing mater.

what about winter? can the compost be stored in a shed and freeze and still be good in the spring and summer?
ichimich75 1 year ago

Thanks again.

happymind534.............Don't put cats in you compost. It will make you pile purrrrrr
DEANWARREN43 1 year ago
In the winter, you can create the same effect using leaves, scrapes, and lawn clippings, put in a pile for a "garden", put black plastic over it, poke holes in plastic, and then by spring, you now have a raised bed.

Do cats make good compost?
happymind534 2 years ago

@happymind534 - Their poo contains toxoplasmosis, so no. Unless they're starving, maybe.

Sounds like a good idea. Good thing I eat a lot of potatoes and the best part is I'll finally have a use for potato peels because I'm not a big fan of potato peels.

Great video!
I just let the compost happen.
I just put it in a pile, or spread it on a area.
I never do anything to it except to water it when it feels dry.

Nice video on composting. I am showing this to the kids as we are planning a compost bin, or maybe just a pile for next year to use in the garden and flower beds.
