ncredible how they seem to marry pre-christian , almost pagan, principles, with christian gospel message. the make a better witness than just about any straight church group that i have ever heard.. amazing women!
and too how they harness their gift with such responsibility without losing both fun, spirit, meaning and depth. a truly great way to use a gift.
This tradition is what sustains us and rejuvenates us. Through the years, through the lonely nights and burdensome days in this Babylon called Amerikkka! God bless these Sisters!krxn11
@KRxN11 Indeed! Its the down home gospel that stir the souls that truly sustains us! I have an old soul. Today's gospel is too secular. Must have that old school element.
i remember my first concert with my grand daddy when he was alive. He took the whole family out to see Sweet Honey in the Rock. I was magnificant. He bought me the cd and i wore it out. didnt know where to get another. i was only 14 or so.
I'm black...African, in fact, and I am sick to death and over black americans talking about 'our suffering', and the things 'we' did in the fields during oppresive times. "we" have done nothing and suffered little in comparison to the slaves who bore that pain decades ago. Berating white people as if they're currently the problem and not SOME of their ancestors toward SOME of ours is ludicrous and ill-informed.
@frankieinlights Some Black Americans do this and it's unacceptable, but Blacks have been conditioned to see the White face as the face of evil and the use of "we" is only a nod to them being our ancestors, and we their descendants reaping the generational oppression, which hasn't been alleviated as much as it should, even today in 2011, because the racism has infected every level of society and is now more covert but still alive. It's within the living memory of many Blacks. Humans are fragile.
Rock and Roll is a direct spin off of Blues and Black music. Chuck berry, Little Richard, Jimmy Hendrix. This particular song is straight 8/8 AFRICAN AMERICAN Folk music. Please Please do not attempt to confine us to a label that meets your limited experiences and understanding. SHITR are not Rockers. They are dignified musical repositories and recreators of the rich and varied African American experience untouched by radio mind programing and ratings wars.
@nazancelen It's people like you who help guide the world toward a day when humanity stops looking at that which devides and seperates us and starts looking at what unites us.
1. How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!
2. For harmony is as precious as the anointing oil that was poured over Aarons head, that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe.
3. Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion. And there the Lord has pronounced his blessing, even life everlasting.
I look forward to that great getting up morning when I rise with nazancelen and all my other Islamic, Buddist, Christian, Hindu etc etc brothers and sisters!
I specially can't wait to see the look on the my Atheist freinds face.
humans' most desolation is trying to see everybody and everything different from him/herself as Satan did in the fist place by underminding Adam. We are all connecetd with each other to the divine wholeness, to God and no matter what; this is most the beautiful feeling, so thank you for sharing the same thing with me. With peace...
What's wrong with you? No that is not and never will be ROCK & ROLL!!!!! Great Old time Black spiritual music. The kind we sang in the fields and on Sundays to keep from killing all of those mean, God -less , child molesting, oppressive, racist cracker, Devils with their feet on our necks.
Respect the music even if you don't understand and aren't capable of clapping on time!
I speak the truth of the African American experience. You cannot dictate to me what is an ACCEPTABLE response to our collective misery. Our music grew out of atrocities perpetrated against us during our terrible captivity in THIS NATION. You demean this glorious music as ROCK AND ROLL out of pure ignorance I articulate my HISTORY from a Black prospective. You should appreciate the importance of our spirituals which gave an oppressed people an outlet from terrifying condition.
@VTERRELL It's not acceptable to say that "crackers" are godless and child molesting. Also, I'm pretty sure you never worked in the fields to make it "we sang." I'm an Appalachian American WHITE woman and I can appreciate this music...it is people like YOU who make people like me feel bad for liking music like this or trying to learn about Black women, which is stifling progress toward equality.
I feel bad for what happened to my Ancestor's but I'm not about to hold it against you. Let us still honor the past, but not dwell on it. Lets just go together towards a brighter future. =) Don't feel bad at all for liking this music. and @VTERREL I don't think carlswade did anything to this music. Not her personally. Maye someone that you knew, but she probably had noting to do with it. BTW I am African American =)
@VTERRELL I appreciate and acknowledge your passion and suffering. I see it like this. We all suffer. And what I mean by that is our individual experiences of suffering are important. But for me, if one is suffering, all are suffering. Black, white, red, blue, orange, purple, and so on. Out of great suffering is the potential for great joy. Once we can express our pain, we can surrender it, and share freely through, art, music, community, friendship. This is the only way to evolve. Love.

Your hateful and mean spirited post is the complete antithesis of everything these women stand for; truth, beauty and love.
